Summer Parenting Tip #1: Helmets Are Not Optional

Tuesday, June 25th, 2013

Summer’s here. It’s supposed to be fun. But you also want to keep your child safe.

A good way to start is to make sure your child wears a helmet when riding a bike. Every time. All the time. It’s not optional.

And you need to be sure that they are wearing it properly. Make sure you have it adjusted so that it fits to offer protection. If the fit is not right it won’t work. Ask your local store to help you adjust it if you aren’t sure.

Why? Simply put, broken bones are one thing – a head injury is a whole other thing. Kids fall when riding bikes. Sometimes they hit their heads. Hard. You need to protect their developing brains. If you don’t believe me, spend some time hanging out in an emergency room on a summer night. It’s sobering.

It surprises me when I see kids riding bikes, unattended, not wearing helmets. Wearing a helmet should be a non-negotiable issue. It’s not a big deal. It should be routine. And if you are riding with your kid – wear one too! You want your brain protected as well – and you will be a good role model for your child.

You want your kid to have fun. It’s a lot more fun to ride a bike knowing that the brain is protected in case the worst case scenario happens.
