Boston Marathon Bombing Double Amputee Expecting First Child

Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs because of injuries from the Boston Marathon bombing last year, is expecting a baby with his fiancé Erin Hurley, he announced Sunday on Facebook. The couple, who got engaged in February, is opting not to learn the baby’s gender. The baby is due July 18. More on their story from Mashable.com:

Bauman was standing at the marathon’s finish line last year, cheering on Erin, when he was caught in one of the two explosions. A photo of him being rushed to safety by three rescuers became one of the day’s most iconic images.

He was praised by authorities after he helped identify bombing suspects Dzohkar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev from his hospital bed. During his recovery, a fundraising effort and Facebook page were founded in Bauman’s honor. To date, it has more than 100,000 likes.

Regarding the upcoming parenthood, Bauman told the AP he “just wants to be a good dad.” The wedding is scheduled for sometime next year: “We’ve got a lot going on. So we don’t need to do everything all at once,” Hurley said.

Bauman wrote a book about his experiences, called Stronger, which is due out on April 8, one week before the first anniversary of the bombing.
