Father Alleges Teachers ‘Bullied’ Autistic Child

After sending his 10-year-old son to school with a hidden recording device, a New Jersey man is alleging that teachers at his son’s elementary school shouted, insulted and otherwise “bullied” the child because he has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD).  CNN.com reports:

Stuart Chaifetz said he placed the recorder in the pocket of his 10-year-old son, Akian, in an attempt to find out why staffers at Horace Mann Elementary School had reported that the boy had been acting out and hitting his teachers.

What surfaced was more than six hours of recordings of what he says are teachers and aides apparently talking about alcohol and sex in front of the class, punctuated by yelling at his son to “shut your mouth.”

Chaifetz posted the recording online Monday, which has since led to disciplinary actions, including the removal of at least one teacher, school officials said.

Disciplinary action should have been taken. People who work with children need better training and greater compassion. That audio was infuriating. It made me very upset. Something has to be done!

What is wrong when we can’t trust teachers. What is wrong with our world?

Good for the dad! My son is in a situation where the teacher is a huge bully to him and the rest of the class (calling them stupid and lazy, cry babies, and other demeaning things….) Of course, she lies her way out of it and the principal backs the teacher. Meanwhile, this is the same teacher-principal team that believes bullying only happens when THEY hear/see it happen…if it happens at lunch or on the playground and they don’t hear it, it didn’t happen and it’s not bullying. Have wanted to put a recorder in my son’s stuff, but if he knew about it, he would tell, and then use it for his own amusement…or get in trouble for having it. Wish I could though!!!

What in the world! I’m blessed to have healthy children, bur would never ever treat Any child like that. It sounds as though the teachers acted as if the children were animal. That is sooooo wrong!

The teaching profession must be taken more seriously. The fact that teachers are so underpaid results in great teachers moving to other better paid positions. I know a pair of husband and wife teachers who are great at what they do who can barely afford to maintain their household. They too are seeking alternative professions. The acts that teacher and aide did is unforgivable, shameful and gives teachers a bad name. Shame on them.

I just saw Stuart Chaifetz’s video on YouTube and all I can say is omg. It is very sad this happens in special needs schools, its unacceptable and there should be a law to protect kids from this abuse.
