Cargill Recalls Ground Turkey on Salmonella Fears
Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation has announced a voluntary recall of 36 million pounds of ground turkey after it was discovered that the meat may be contaminated with salmonella, a bacteria that causes diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. At least 76 in 26 states have reportedly been sickened.
The recalled meat was processed at the company’s Springdale, Arkansas plant between February 20 and August 2, a Cargill news release said. The company has suspended production of ground turkey products at that plant. Cargill’s other 3 turkey processing facilities are not involved in the recall.
Federal health officials advise customers to always cook turkey to 165 degrees Fahrenheit (74 Celsius) and to follow safe handling guidelines because properly handled and cooked turkey will not sicken anyone even if the meat is contaminated with salmonella.
