Scene from a Pregnant/Toddler-Chasing Household

I waddle into the kitchen last night to track down something to eat. Clint looks up from loading the dishwasher.

Clint: You upright, in the kitchen, after 8 PM? Wow. I wonder when that last happened.

Me: Well I wonder when you last opened that bottom cabinet to put away the Tupperware. Look at that pile.

Clint: Yeah, I hate doing that. So I don’t that often.

Me: That often? Try ever.

Clint: Well when was the last time you did a load of dishes?

Me: Well when was the last time you did a load of laundry?

Clint: OK, there’s no end to this.

Me: Let’s just go straight to our other regular evening conversation: Cute things Roy said or did today.

Clint: How about when he saw those birds at the bird feeder and yelled, “Birdie! Mwah!” (fake kissing sound)

Me: Nice. Strong start.

Very similar scene at our house. Our most recent saying is “Oh no! Puppy!” which sounds like, “oh noooo! PAH-PEE!”

It’s like parent code, your-child specific.

Exactly. We have caught ourselves, over the last few days, just turning to one another and saying it. Yesterday, the guy who works for us said it to Eric.

I can’t wait to see what the cute child phrase is that makes everything annoying go away.
