Are Imogen and Asher Destined to Top the Baby Name Charts?

Tuesday, July 16th, 2013

The folks at Nameberry just released the top baby names in searches on their site—and the results may just surprise you. (They certainly surprised me!)

Imogen is the top name for girls on Nameberry. It’s a name with wonderful meaning—beloved child—and a Shakespearean pedigree. And Asher, a Hebrew name that means happy, tops the list for boys.

Of course, viewed doesn’t necessarily mean used. And some of the names on their top 10—including Katniss, Django, and even Imogen—haven’t even shown up in the top 1000 baby names in the U.S. So is it a sign that people are moving in a more pop-culture direction with their baby names? (Merida is also one of the fastest-rising names on Nameberry.) Or is it just that baby name geeks like to find out if these names actually exist and what they mean—but then they move on to the Sophias and Jacobs?

Some of my favorites from their top 10 include Seraphina, a name that means angelic and was used by Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck for one of their daughters; Eleanor, a regal name that I love for the royal baby should she be a girl; and for boys, Henry and Owen.

Here’s the full top 10 for both boys and girls—you can see the top 100 boys’ names and the top 100 girls’ names. What names on there would you consider for your baby? Don’t forget to like In Name Only on Facebook to keep up with the latest in baby names!

Top Baby Names of the Year—Revealed!

Thursday, May 9th, 2013

The Social Security Administration just shared their compilation of the top baby names of 2012, and it looks like Sophia and Jacob continue their reign in the top slots again for the second year in a row! Sophia brings to mind classic actress Sophia Loren, while Jacob, a classic Biblical name, got a shot in the arm from the uberpopular Twilight movies.

There are subtle little shifts in the top ten lists: Isabella slots back down to number three and Emma moves up to take the number two spot, while William heads out of the top three names for boys—making it Jacob, Mason and Ethan as the top three most popular names for boys. New to the top 10 this year for boys are Liam a red-hot name which jumped from #15 in 2011 to #6 in 2012, and Elizabeth, which traded spots with Chloe.

And here’s the top 10 in all their glory! Keep watching all this week and next as I analyze the heck out of the lists and see what big changes have occurred over the past year. (Like In Name Only on Facebook to keep up with the latest baby name scoop!)
