My husband and I are huge horror fans, so we’ve been faithful watchers of The Walking Dead, AMC’s top-notch gorefest about a tiny band of people trying to survive in a world overrun with zombies. While most of the characters have pretty standard names (there’s Rick and Lori and their son, Carl, and Maggie and Glenn and Daryl), tonight brought our first real glimpse of Michonne, the new girl in town.
Michonne is a real badass, who kills zombies with her katana (a Japanese samurai sword), and brings her zombified boyfriend and best friend along with her, in chains and missing their arms and lower jaws to prevent them from eating anyone. From what I’ve read online about the comic books on which the show The Walking Dead is based, we can expect her to become a serious warrior in the tribe.
Will Michonne (pronounced mi-SHOWN) become a hot name? It’s not listed in any baby book I’ve encountered, and even the websites I regularly reference don’t have it. My best guess is that it’s based on either Michelle (number 144 on the current baby name lists), which gives it the meaning “who is like God,” or more likely, it’s based on Michiko, a popular Japanese name that means “righteous.” It’s a nice alternative to these more common monikers, though you’ll likely your daughter up for years of having to spell and pronounce her name for everyone (unless she hangs with a comic book crew).
Middle names might be a little tricky for this one. The name has a very strong feeling to it, so you don’t want to go with something fluffy like Belle or Lark. I’d probably try something like Jade or True, a short, monosyllabic name that doesn’t read as purely feminine.
What do you think of the name Michonne? And are you tuning in to the new season of The Walking Dead?
