Melissa Joan Hart and her husband, Mark Wilkerson, added a third son to their family yesterday, and her new baby’s name is Tucker (middle name still to be determined). Tucker’s the third boy in the family, and the first without an “on” name: The other two are Braydon, 4, and Mason, 6 1/2.
Tucker is an English name that began its life as an occupational surname (people who folded pleats into fabric were called “Tuckers”), and now works beautifully as part of that surname-as-first-name trend. It’s risen quickly since the early 1990s, and now falls just inside the top 200 names in the U.S. for boys.
Even though it doesn’t necessarily fit in with his brothers’ names soundwise, Tucker is a great match with Mason, at least, which is another occupational surname turned first name. (Note that Melissa picked the name Mason right before it became white hot—it’s currently ranking as the number 2 boys’ name in the U.S.) Just FYI, Braydon is a top-300 name that means “wide valley,” and is widely touted as an alternative spelling to the #37 name in the country, Brayden. Tucker is a name that’s been relatively unheard of in the celebrity baby name world, other than as a middle name for actress Amy Brenneman’s daughter, Charlotte.
Just in case Melissa and Mark are looking for a little baby name advice, I’ve picked a few good middle names that would work beautifully with Tucker. Given the couple’s long last name (Wilkerson), and the two-syllable first name, I’d go with something short and sweet: James, Chance, Grey and Jay would all sound wonderful with the names they’ve already picked.
What do you think of Melissa Joan Hart’s baby names—are there any you’d want to add to your baby name short list? What middle name would you pick to go with Tucker?
