Celebrity Baby Name: Dixie Pearl

Thursday, June 28th, 2012

Kings of Leon singer Caleb Followill and his wife, Victoria’s Secret model Lily Aldridge, had their first baby girl last week, and chose a very Southern-ish name—Dixie Pearl—for her. It’s a name that has a touch of glamour, and it seems to be a very fitting choice for the daughter of a model and the frontman of one of the hottest new bands from the South.

Dixie comes from the Latin word for “tenth,” though it’s commonly used as a nickname for the South. The name Dixie peaked in popularity in the 1940s, when it reached in the top 200. It bottomed out for several decades around the top 1000, but it’s seen a huge uptick since 2010, so it’s a name that’s back on the rise. It’s a nice alternative to some of the ultrapopular “x” names, like Alexis and Alexa—and fits in with the current place name trend. (So you can use it in lieu of names like Savannah, Sydney and Brooklyn.)

Pearl is quickly becoming a hot middle name. It means “jewel of the sea,” after the precious gem. As a first name, it’s right around the top 1000 names, but it likely ranks much higher as a middle name. In fact, it’s become a hot middle name for the celebrity set: Jack Osbourne, Harvey Weinstein, Shonda Rhimes, Jennifer Weiner and Matt LeBlanc have all given it to their daughters. This name fits in with the precious gem trend, including Ruby and Jade.

As it turns out, there’s already something that’s called Dixie Pearl—it’s a yummy-sounding cocktail that contains creme de cacao, amaretto and rum. (I am wondering if that factored in to Caleb and Lily’s choice of name for their baby!)

So, what do you think of the baby name Dixie Pearl? Would you consider using it for your daughter?
