Celebrity Baby Names: JWoww’s Daughter

Monday, July 14th, 2014

It’s a girl for Jersey Shore alum JWoww (AKA Jenni Farley) and fiancé Roger Mathews. For their first daughter, they went with a unique pair of names—Meilani Alexandra. Meilani is a Hawaiian name that means beautiful sky, and hasn’t broken the top 1000 in the U.S. (except, perhaps, in Hawaii itself). And Alexandra is a classic name that means defending men—it’s a top 100 baby name here in the U.S..

I love the two names separately, but not sure they work as well together. With Meilani, I would pick a nature middle name, like Lily, Rose, Pearl or Wren.

Tell us: What do you think of JWoww’s new daughter’s name? Would you put Meilani and Alexandra together? Baby Name Dilemma: A Pretty Italian Name for Snooki’s Baby-to-Be

Tuesday, April 29th, 2014

The Jersey Shore’s Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi did a pretty great job naming her son—I love the name Lorenzo! But apparently, she’s stumped for names when it comes to her new baby to be. She recently posted on her CeleBuzz blog: “Help us with names! We honestly have no ideas for any names, and I’m looking for something original like Lorenzo. Something Italian, and beautiful.”

Readers of Snooki’s blog have already given her lots of great advice, but here are my picks for a potential daughter:

Allegra I really wish the allergy med hadn’t co-opted this one. It’s a pretty name, has a wonderful meaning (joyful), and is easy to pronounce and understand, yet not exactly popular.

Giada This gem of a name is an actual gem—it means “jade.” Thanks to popular Food Network chef Giada DeLaurentiis, it’s been in the top 1000 since 2007, but it’s still unique enough to set Snooki’s daughter apart. Consider it the girl version of her fab name Lorenzo.

Valentina This top 200 baby name means healthy and strong, and comes with a whole slew of cute nicknames (I’m partial to Lena). I think it would flow beautifully with Snooki’s fiancé Jionni LaValle’s last name.

Francesca A-lister Drew Barrymore just picked the boyish nickname from this Italian favorite for her daughter—could Snooki have her own Frankie, too? Francesca means “free man,” and is currently a top 500 name.

Luciana This sweet Italian variant on Lucy means “light,” and is on a sharp upswing in the U.S.—though it still hasn’t cracked the top 500. This is another one that comes with lots of fun nicknames—which is a very big consideration with the Jersey Shore crew!

Luna Thanks to Harry Potter and Uma Thurman, Luna’s been on a big upswing over the past decade, from near the bottom of the top 1000 to the top 250. (Expect it to go even higher this year, thanks to a character on True Blood and Uma’s daughter. This sweet name means moon.

And for a son:

Aurelio  This name means “golden one,” and really flows beautifully with LaValle.

Orlando Don’t think DisneyWorld when you think of this name—think more like Orlando Bloom. The name means “famous,” making perfect for the offspring of a reality show star, don’t you think?

Santino Popularized in The Godfather, this name means “little saint,” even though the character was anything but. The name Santino is just about to break through the top 600 here in the U.S.

So what do you think? Share your favorite Italian-flavored names here for Snooki. If you need help searching, check out our Baby Name Finder. Or check out our Baby Fame Name Generator for a name worthy of the A list.

Would You Let Snooki Name Your Baby?

Saturday, June 8th, 2013

Apparently, now that Jersey Shore is cancelled and she already has experience naming one baby of her own, Snooki has gone into the baby-naming biz—and she’s offering her unsolicited baby name advice to celebs like Kim Kardashian and Fergie.

For Fergie’s soon-to-come baby, she offers Casper for a boy, “because Fergie is funky and fun, so Casper’s a fun name.” For a girl, Violet’s her choice, “because Violet is pretty just like Fergie.”

For the offspring of the K-centric couple, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Snooki picked Kougar or Kat “so they could still fit in the family business.” (I’m intrigued as to what business the Kardashians are in, other than allowing their lives to be filmed for prime-time TV and coming up with trendy names like Khloe and Mason.)

Overall, the choices are about 50-50 in my book. I like the girls’ names. Violet’s always been a big favorite of mine (I’m using it for the heroine of a novel I’m working on), and I like Kat as a nickname for something longer, like Katharine or Katrina. But Casper has the connection with the “friendly ghost” of old-school cartoon fame (maybe Snooki’s too young to remember the cartoons?), and Kougar—well, you know my thoughts about creative spellings. Plus, Cougar has those semi-creepy connotations of middle-aged women prowling for young handsome men. I also find it interesting that she went for mostly offbeat, daring choices for others, when her own baby was given a very old-school Italian name (Lorenzo).

What do you think of Snooki’s baby name choices? Would any of them make your short list? (Shout out to Appellation Mountain for the heads up on this interesting news!)

Snooki’s a Mommy!

Sunday, August 26th, 2012

Jersey Shore regular Nicole Snooki Polizzi shared the news of the birth of her first baby by announcing that “the world just got another Guido.” (Oh, boy.) Her new son, with fiance Jionni Lavalle, is named Lorenzo Dominic Lavalle.

That’s about as traditional an Italian name as you can get—Lorenzo is an Italian variation on Laurence, which means “laurel wreathed,” and it’s a name that is currently residing in the top 350 baby names in the U.S. The middle name, Dominic, is actually a much more popular name (currently ranked number 76), and means “belonging to the Lord.”

The name flows pretty nicely—though for some reason, I can’t stop picturing Brad Pitt and his crew trying to say it in their hilarious faux Italian accents in Inglourious Bastards. The name may be a bit of a mouthful, but it’s perfect for a child of two people with strong ties to their Italian roots. And there’s nothing more timeless than choosing a name that reflects your family’s heritage.

Given the Jersey Shore crew’s noted passion for nicknames, though, I’m guessing he’s not going to be called Lorenzo on a daily basis. The most common nickname for Lorenzo is simply Renzo, but I’m guessing they’re going to be more creative than that. Maybe something like EZ or Enzy or Zo?

What do you think of Snooki’s name choice? Would you consider choosing a baby name that reflects your family’s heritage?
