Stars—they’re just like us. Except when they pick some really offbeat names like Moxie Crimefighter or Pilot Inspektor. But there are plenty of stars out there who give their kids names you might actually want to consider for your own baby—even if they are a little offbeat. Here are some of our favorites from 2014!
Kaya Evdokia Chosen by Hayden Panettiere & Wladimir Klitschko, this unique name combines a Native American name with one common in Slavic countries.
Esmeralda Amada Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes picked this gem of a name, which means emerald.
Elizabella Dylan Alyssa Milano opted for this rarely heard mashup of Elizabeth and Isabella.
Delta Bell Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard gave their daughter a name with a bit of Southern flair.
Gus Two different actresses picked the cute nickname Gus for their sons this year—Poppy Montgomery and Ashley Williams.
Viola Philomena Actress Megan Hilty chose this name, which has a musical bent.
Hazel John Krasinski & Emily Blunt picked the color/nature name Hazel for their daughter.
River Rose Kelly Clarkson liked this melodic combo of nature-themed names.
Booker Jombe Thandie Newton chose this occupational name for her son.
Rose Dorothy Scarlett Johansson gave her daughter a sweet, old-fashioned name (that had an inadvertent shout-out to the 80s sitcom Golden Girls).
Ophelia Saint Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl went with this Shakespearean name (and the offbeat word name Saint) for his daughter.
Georgia Marie SNL’s Kenan Thompson picked this vintage place name and a traditional middle for his daughter.
Evelyn Penn Bruce Willis chose an on-the-rise old-fashioned name for his fourth daughter.
Otis Alexander Jason Sudeikis & Olivia Wilde may be bringing back the rarely heard Otis from obscurity.
Bridget Monroe Rosie Pope went with Irish favorite Bridget for her daughter.

Celebrity Baby Names, Must Read

Finding time to read isn’t always easy with kids—and so I’m just now getting around to reading The Fault in Our Stars, John Green’s masterful story about the romance between two kids who just happen to have cancer. (I’m not yet done, so no spoilers, please!) If you haven’t read it, do—it’s the kind of book I love, where writer’s skill is so deft that he could write several chapters about assembling IKEA furniture, and you’d be willing to go along for the ride. And the movie, which opens in theaters on Friday, looks like a winner as well.
And if you’ve read the book, you know it only takes a few paragraphs before you fall in love with Hazel Grace, the “miracle” girl who survived a cancer that wrecked her lungs, forcing her to walk around trailing an oxygen tank that pipes better air through a cannula under her nose. And it seems that people have fallen back in love with the name Hazel as well.
Hazel is a nature name, for the tree that gives us hazelnuts, and it’s also a color—a green-flecked brown eye hue. It reached its first peak in popularity back in the early 1900s, then bottomed out from the 1970s to the early 2000s. But like many other turn-of-the-20th-century faves (think Adeline and Clara), this is making a big comeback. It’s a favorite of celebrities—Julia Roberts picked it first, followed recently by Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. And it’s currently the 157th most popular name for girls here in the U.S. My guess is that with the movie release and the passionate fan base surrounding The Fault in Our Stars, this name is definitely on a popularity trajectory that should bring it into the top 100 within the next year or two.
John Green chose well pairing Hazel with the sweet middle name Grace. If you don’t want to seem like you’re copying, consider pairing Hazel with June, James (yes, it works for girls!), Claire, Plum or May/Mae.
What do you think of the name Hazel? Would you consider a nature-based name for your baby?

Baby Name Stories, In Name Only
Sunday, February 16th, 2014
It’s a girl for former Office star John Krasiniski and his wife, actress Emily Blunt. And they picked a pretty old-fashioned name that’s making a comeback: Hazel.
Hazel was a red-hot name back in the early part of the 20th century, then bottomed out from the 1970s to 2000. But as the 21st century started up, it skyrocketed back into prominence again, and is now in the top 200 baby names. (You can also thank Julia Roberts for that, who picked the name for her daughter.)
It’s a type of tree (think hazel nuts), and an eye color that’s not quite brown, not quite green, not quite gray. And we think it’s a pretty lovely name.
No word yet on what middle name they picked for their daughter. I love Hazel with Clementine, Corinne or Josephine, if you’re looking for a longer middle name, or June, Rose or Wren if you like a shorter one.
What do you think of Hazel? Is it on your short list of baby names?
