Cool Name of the Week: Saint

Monday, August 25th, 2014

When two celebs pick the same baby name within a few weeks of each other, we need to pay attention. Two years ago, it was Camden that was the big hit, picked by both Nick Lachey and Kristin Cavallari. This year, it’s Saint, picked by two different rock stars: Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Dave Grohl, and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz.

Saint could be a unisex name, but on the Social Security lists, it only showed up for boys—and only 22 boys bore the name last year. It has that virtuous vibe, like names like Hope and Faith, but feels much fresher. And compared to some of the more wild word names that stars have picked for their kids in recent years, like Rainbow, Apple, and the like, this one feels more wearable to me. (Perhaps it’s because musician St. Vincent, who performed with Grohl and Nirvana at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame show, also goes by the name.) But a word of warning: Your devoutly religious grandmother may not approve of taking this title, given to those officially recognized as holy, and giving it to your brand new baby.

While Pete Wentz put it in the front spot, giving his son the moniker Saint Lazslo, I’d prefer it in the middle spot, where Dave Grohl placed it for his new daughter, Ophelia Saint. For girls, I like this crisp middle with a very feminine first name, like Emily, Cordelia or Rosalind. For boys, try names like Dexter and Harrison. For both sexes, I’d avoid putting it in the first spot with the name of a very popular saint in the middle: Saint Joseph, Saint Elizabeth, Saint Anne, Saint Luke.

Tell us: Do you think Saint is a wearable choice, or is it a little too irreverent for your taste?

Celebrity Baby Names: Pete Wentz’s Son

Friday, August 22nd, 2014

It’s been a busy week for celebrity births—and Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz is the latest star to welcome a child. He and girlfriend Meagan Camper welcomed a son, which they gave the offbeat name Saint Lazslo. (Pete Wentz also has a son named Bronx Mowgli with ex Ashlee Simpson.)

He’s also the second star this week to choose the name Saint—Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl gave the word name to his daughter as her middle name. It hasn’t ever ranked in the top 1000 names.

Lazslo is a different way to spell Laszlo, a Hungarian name that means glorious ruler, and is also relatively offbeat—it’s never been in the top 1000. Its biggest claim to fame is the character Victor Laszlo, the non-Humphrey Bogart guy in the classic movie Casablanca’s love triangle. I’m wondering if there’s someone in their families they’re honoring with this choice.

What do you think of Saint? Do you think it’s the next hot word name—or is it a little too wild for you?

Celebrity Baby Names: Daughters for Dave Grohl and Carson Daly

Thursday, August 21st, 2014

Two celebs welcomed girls recently: Foo Fighter frontman and Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl welcomed his third daughter with wife Jordyn Blum. Joining big sisters Violet Maye and Harper Willow is daughter Ophelia Saint. (People magazine got the scoop from the obituary for Dave’s father, Jim Grohl, in The Vindicator.) And Carson Daly and fiancee Siri Pinter welcomed their daughter, London Rose, who joins siblings Etta Jones and Jackson James.

Ophelia is most famous as the name of Hamlet’s drowned lady love, but this lovely Greek name, which means “help,” may be ready for a comeback. (It hasn’t been in the top 1000 since the 1950s!) No word on what middle name Dave and Jordyn chose, but I could see it paired with a short and sweet middle, like Leigh, Rose, or June. People may have been nervous about using it in the past because of its association with one of Shakespeare’s most tragic characters, but it’s a wonderfully wearable alternative to some of the uber popular baby names, like Sophia and Fiona.

London is a top 100 baby name, and has been on a sharp rise in popularity since the start of the 21st century, as part of the new interest geographic names. They paired it with popular middle name Rose, one of the red-hot floral names.

What do you think of Carson and Dave’s choices? Which one would you consider for your daughter?
