Cool Name of the Week: Bruno

Monday, September 9th, 2013

I don’t care much about football—other than the commercials and the halftime show at the Superbowl. Some of my favorite acts have appeared over the past few years, including U2, Beyonce and Prince. And now, it looks like a cool, newer act will be rocking the halftime show this year—Bruno Mars. Who doesn’t love the song “Just the Way You Are?” (My daughters are HUGE fans of it!) He’s pretty amazing live, based on his performances at a slew of awards shows—so I think he’s an excellent choice to rock the Superbowl.

I’m thinking that this young Bruno has helped make his name a little more popular for the next generation of boys. Bruno is a color name, a German import that means “brown.” It’s been on a bit of an uptick since the beginning of the 21st century, when it climbed from near the bottom of the top 1000 up into the 700 range. (It’s currently the 790th most popular name here in the U.S., though it’s more popular in Europe and South America.)

Besides Bruno Mars, there’s Bruno Tonioli, the exuberant judge of Dancing With the Stars, and the out-there character Bruno, created by Sacha Baron Cohen.

Bruno would be a fun choice if you wanted to create a “color name” theme with your kids—who wouldn’t love a Bruno and Ruby sibset? As for middle names, Bruno calls for something intriguing—no Bruno John or Bruno James here. I like it with Hudson, Luke, Magnus, or Lennon, or if you’re really daring, something offbeat like Wolf or Wilder.

What do you think of the name Bruno? Is it an up-and-comer, or still a little too out there for your son?
