SPOILER ALERT! Don’t read this if you haven’t watched the grand finale of the Amazing Race and you want to be surprised.
Last night’s grand finale of Amazing Race was pretty amazing—former city slickers turned goat farmers Josh and Brent (who I’d fallen in love with on their reality show The Fabulous Beekman Boys) made it to the finish line first, and ended up grabbing the Amazing Race crown. What made it really amazing is that they hadn’t won a single challenge throughout the race, until it really counted—the very last challenge, matching up greetings with the country where they’re spoken—on their way to winning a million dollars. It was a wonderful victory for a pair of scrappy underdogs, who proved the old tortoise and the hare storyline true, coming from far behind to take the lead.
While I love both of their names, Brent has the most unique of the two. His name, which means “near the burnt land,” is on a sharp decline from its peak during the 1980s, and is currently #775 in the country. It makes a nice alternative to some of the names further up the charts—names like Blake, Brantley, or Bentley, for instance.
It’s a name that lends itself to a longer middle name—something like Alexander or Jonathan would be nice—or it makes a fabulous middle name, too. And it has that “nice guy” reputation, thanks to Brent’s southern sweetness.
Were you watching the Amazing Race? What did you think of the finish—and the two winners? And were there any other names that came out of this season’s adventure that you’d like to put on your short list of favorites?
