Super Name Choices

Friday, May 25th, 2012

The Avengers broke practically every box office record in the past few weeks—so expect to see some superhero names rising to the top of everyone’s lists. (Just think about what the popularity of Twilight did for the name Isabella!)

While “Hulk” doesn’t exactly seem to be an appropriate choice for an eight-pound newborn, the Avengers’ alter egos have some pretty spectacular names to consider:

Bruce This ultramasculine name keeps The Hulk undercover. But considering other famous Bruces include Bruce Lee, Bruce Springsteen, Bruce Willis, and of course, that other famous crimefighter, Bruce Wayne (AKA Batman), you can’t go wrong with this classic, which means “plants, flowers and trees.”

Natasha The only female Avenger, Black Widow, goes incognito as Natasha Romanoff. It’s a beautiful name that means “time or age.” And since it’s currently just cracking the top 500, it’s unlikely your daughter will find another Natasha in her kindergarten class.

Thor Thor’s the only Avenger who doesn’t use an alias—and it’s a more offbeat choice than the names the other heroes sport. Thor was the Norse god of thunder, a hammer-wielding protector of the people. In other words, it’s the perfect name for a boisterous boy.

Clint Think Clint Eastwood, Clint Black—or Clint Barton, Hawkeye’s alter ego. The name hasn’t cracked the top 1000 names in more than a decade, which means this classic is ripe for a comeback.

Tony Iron Man Tony Stark uses the most popular nickname for Anthony, a name that means “priceless.” Anthony still ranks in the top 10 baby names in the U.S., so odds are the popularity of The Avengers will only push it higher on the charts. If you’re looking for a girls’ name, consider the feminine variation, Antonia.

Steve What’s more all-American than a name like Steve? Captain America Steve Rogers uses this shortened version of Steven—a name that just dropped out of the top 100 a few years ago.

And if you’re not enamored with any of these names, don’t worry—we still have this summer’s epic superhero flicks, The Dark Knight Rises and The Amazing Spiderman, to offer a little name inspiration.
