Celebrity Baby Names: Kenan Thompson’s New Daughter

Sunday, June 22nd, 2014

It’s a baby girl for SNL comedian Kenan Thompson and Christina Evangeline. The couple welcomed their first daughter on Friday, and named her Georgia Marie.

Georgia is a place name, but it’s also a feminization of the classic George, which means farmer. There’s also famous artist Georgia O’Keeffe, and a slew of other celebrity babies sporting the name—including the daughters of William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman, Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall, and Harrison Ford. It’s currently near the 250nd spot in popularity.

Marie is the French variation of Mary, and it means bitter. It’s often used in the middle spot.

In all, it’s a lovely name! What do you think of it?

Celebrity Baby Names: Jenna Fischer’s New Daughter

Sunday, June 15th, 2014

Office star Jenna Fischer welcomed her second child with husband Lee Kirk. Joining big brother Weston Lee is little sister Harper Marie. (I’m sensing that Jenna and Lee love surname names—don’t you?)

Harper has been a huge favorite lately for ladies—it’s currently the 16th most popular name for girls. It means, naturally, “harp player.”

Marie is a French variant of Mary, and means bitter. It’s been a top middle name choice for decades, and it’s currently in the top 600 baby names for the U.S.

In all, a lovely name, and one that it’s likely that some of you may have picked. (No oddball names here!)

Tell us: Do you love Jenna’s choice? And if you are one of the moms who picked Harper for your daughter, what did you pick as the middle name?

Celebrity Baby Names: Kelly Clarkson’s New Daughter

Sunday, June 15th, 2014

It’s a girl for first-time mom Kelly Clarkson and husband Brandon Blackstock. And they gave her daughter a very nature-themed baby name: River Rose.

River used to be considered a more male baby name, thanks to actor River Phoenix. But now, the girls are starting to catch up—River is still in the top 400 baby names for boys, but it’s currently the 588th most popular name for girls. (Perhaps the biggest claim to fame in the girls’ column is the character River Song from the recent Doctor Who series.)

Rose is one of the most popular and timeless floral names for girls, and regularly used in the middle spot. Rose is currently the 224th most popular name for girls in the U.S.

River Rose definitely has a nice melody to it, and gives off a country singer vibe. (You can picture a River Rose out on stage somewhere in Nashville.)

Tell us: What do you think of Kelly and Brandon’s choice? Do you think boy or girl when you hear the name River?

Celebrity Baby Names: Lil Kim’s New Baby Girl

Monday, June 9th, 2014

It’s a girl for rapper Lil Kim! And the first time mom gave her daughter a word name that makes it clear she’s treating her new daughter like a princess: Royal Reign.

Both names are relatively unheard for girls, but Royal is in the top 1000 for boys for the first time since the early 1970s. As you can imagine, it means kingly. Reign means rule—and only 97 girls rocked that name last year.

Yep, it’s a name that has celebrity written all over it! It’s along the lines of Holly Madison’s infamous Rainbow Aurora—in other words, not a name for someone who might someday need to have a career in a professional field like medicine or law to support themselves.

What do you think? Do you like Royal or Reign, for either a girl or a boy? And if you think Royal Reign is out there, check out our picks for the wildest baby names of 2013. Ginnifer Goodwin and Josh Dallas Named Their Son…

Wednesday, June 4th, 2014

No, it wasn’t Neal! (That was the name of their baby prince on Once Upon a Time, where they play Snow White and Prince Charming, respectively.) Instead, Ginnifer and Josh chose the perfectly charming Oliver Finlay for their real-life prince.

Oliver has been a popular choice for boys in the U.S. lately—it’s been in the top 100 names for the past 5 years, and is now 52nd in the U.S. (Across the pond in the U.K., it’s the second most popular name!) It means olive tree, a traditional signifier of peace (think of extending the olive branch). It’s a name that feels fresh and friendly—and hasn’t been quite overdone here (at least, not yet!).

Finlay is a Scottish name that means “fair-haired hero.” And given the rise in the popularity of Finn, this might be a good variation to get you to that nickname—it hasn’t yet cracked the top 10. The Finley spelling is more popular in the U.S., and has become virtually unisex these days.

In all, Oliver Finlay Dallas is a pretty fabulous baby name!

Tell me: What do you think of Ginnifer and Josh’s choice? Are either of those names on your short list?
