Celebrity Baby Names: Hayden Panettiere’s New Daughter

Monday, December 15th, 2014

It’s a girl for Nashville actress Hayden Panettiere and her fiance, boxer Wladimir Klitschko. They welcomed Kaya Evdokia Klitschko last Tuesday.

Kaya is a Native American name that means “elder sister,” and unlike its rhyming cousin, Maya, it’s not been overly popular—it currently sits at #757 in popularity. Its biggest claim to fame is being the name of the American Girl historical Native American doll. It’s also been used by several other celebrities, including model Cindy Crawford.

Evdokia is an old Greek name that means “pleasure and delight.” It’s relatively unheard of here, and I wonder if it has family significance to the couple. (There’s also a 1970s Greek film about a prostitute that bears the name.)

What do you think of Hayden and Wladimir’s name choices? Do you think they’re going to launch a Kaya revolution?

Celebrity Baby Names: Tyler Perry’s Son

Thursday, December 4th, 2014

Actor/director Tyler Perry and his longtime girlfriend Gelila Bekele welcomed their first son over Thanksgiving weekend. And they gave him a name that has meaning to them: Aman Tyler Perry.

Depending on your source, Aman is either a Hindi boys’ name meaning peace, or a variant spelling of Iman, an Arabic girls’ name meaning faith. Tyler and Gelila appear to adhere to the former, stating that the name was chosen to honor “the true meaning of Thanksgiving and then, of course, the holiday season.”

Tyler, of course, is in honor of Daddy. It’s an occupational name that means “maker of tilers”, and currently a top 100 name for boys, though it’s been used for girls as well.

Tell us: What do you think of Tyler and Gelila’s choices? Would you consider Aman for your son or daughter?

Celebrity Baby Names: Jimmy Fallon’s New Daughter!

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2014

It’s another girl for Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and wife Nancy Juvonen! Joining big sister Winnie Rose is Frances Cole, who was born via surrogate on December 3rd.

Frances is experiencing a bit of a renaissance after more than 50 years on the decline. (You can probably thank Pope Francis for the newfound interest!) The name means either free man or from France, depending on the source. If you liked Drew Barrymore’s decision to go with Frankie for her daughter, you can use the same nickname with this name. (And given that Nancy is a partner in Drew Barrymore’s production company and Drew’s the gal who set them up, I wouldn’t be surprised if she helped inspire the name choice!)

Cole is generally used as a boy’s name, and means “coal black.” It’s currently near the top 100 boys’ names, and is most commonly associated with songwriter Cole Porter. (Not a bad association for a baby!) I’m wondering if the name has some sort of family history to it.

In all, the name hits the same vein as big sister Winnie’s—and I kind of love the Winnie/Frances sibset.

Tell us: What do you think of Jimmy and Nancy’s name choices? Would you consider Frances for your daughter—and is Cole ready to make the jump from boys’ name to girls’?

Red-Hot New Celebrity Baby Name: Gus?

Thursday, November 13th, 2014

Could celebrities be channeling The Fault in Our Stars in their choice of baby names? Two actresses in less than a month chose the name Gus (a common nickname for Augustus, the male half of the book’s star-crossed lovers) for their sons. First, actress Ashley Williams (famous for her role in How I Met Your Mother) bestowed it on her son, pairing it with her surname in the middle spot. And this week, actress Poppy Montgomery named her third child Gus. Gus Monroe, actually, which is a pretty fab pair of names.

Gus could be part of the renaissance of some of those old-school vintage names—names like Evelyn, Clara and Adeline for girls, Alfred, Walter and Arthur for boys. Could that mean that we may find some more of those not-so-golden oldies making a move back toward the top? Maybe names like Wilfred, Harry and Stanley for boys, Helen, Winifred, and Mildred for girls will start moving back up the charts.

Tell us: Which old lady and old guy names do you think should be making a comeback? And do you think that these celebs are giving Gus another shot at popularity?

Celebrity Baby Names: Daughters for Robert Downey Jr. and for Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson

Friday, November 7th, 2014

Two celebrity couples are thinking pink this week. Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan, a film producer, welcomed their second child together, a girl with the given name of Avri Roel. And actors Hayden Christensen (best known, at least in my family, as Anakin Skywalker from the Star Wars prequel trilogy) and Rachel Bilson (currently in Hart of Dixie) welcomed their first daughter, and gave her a fairy-tale name. Literally. They named their daughter Briar Rose, as in the nickname for Sleeping Beauty.

Avri is a creative spelling of the popular Avery, and shares its fun meaning—ruler of the elves. The couple announced that Roel was chosen to honor family members: Ro in honor of Robert Downey Jr.’s father, Robert and stepmother, and his wife’s mother, El in honor of his mother Elsie and his wife Susan’s father.

Briar means thorny brambles, and has never been a top 1000 name, while Rose is a classic floral name that’s become a current favorite in the middle spot. While it’s definitely not as weird as something like Moxie Crimefighter, it’s definitely an offbeat celebrity choice.

Tell us: What do you think of these baby name picks? Would you choose either one of them for your own child?
