Anna Chlumsky's having a pretty darned good day—she just scored her first Emmy nom as the driven Chief of Staff to Julia Louis-Dreyfus's wacky Vice President on Veep. Oh, and she became a mom to a brand-new daughter, too! She and husband Shaun So welcomed daughter Penelope Joan in the wee hours of the morning.
Penelope has become a celebrity baby name darling, picked by celebs as diverse Tina Fey, Taylor Hanson (of MMMBop fame), and Kourtney Kardashian. It's the name of neighbor Penny on Big Bang Theory, along with a slew of other notable pop-culture influences. It's a Greek name that means weaver, and is on a huge upswing, jumping from the bottom of the top 1000 in 2001 to #125 in 2012. (I happen to love it myself, and it's the name of one of our kittens!)
Joan is a variant on Johanna/John, and means "God is gracious." It hasn't been a popular choice lately, though it has some serious kick-ass cache—we're talking warrior Joan of Arc, rocker Joan Jett, and one of my favorite actresses, Joan Cusack. I vote we start giving Joan a little more love!
So kudos to Anna on both her Emmy nod—and her fabulous taste in baby names. What do you think of Penelope Joan? Cool or overplayed?
We're still waiting on news of the royal baby—make sure you like In Name Only on Facebook so you'll be among the first to get the full scoop on the royal name!
