Baby Name Advice: What’s a Good Middle Name for Zoey?

Reader Ashley is in a bit of a time crunch—her baby is due this week and she doesn’t have a middle name!

My husband and I love the name Zoey and can not come up with a middle name we love. The suggestion from our family is Elizabeth but my husband is not 100% about it, what are your suggestions? She is due within the week so as you can see its been a long battle…and to think Zoey was so easy for us to agree on! —Ashley

Ashley has a last name that’s on the short side, so you can go either way with the middle name—either something long, like Elizabeth (which I happen to like) or something short and sweet.

If you wanted something a bit more traditional, you can’t go wrong with Jane, Rose or Alice for shorter middle names, or Violet, Catherine or Charlotte for girls. Some of my personal favorites include Adeline, Calista and Caroline.  But I’m thinking that you’re looking for something a little more offbeat, given that you’ve chosen a more modern spelling of Zoe for your daughter.

I’m liking some of the modern wintry names—names like Snow, January and Winter all flow nicely with Zoey. You could also consider some of the haute color names. Ruby would be a bit much with Zoey, but you could try Blue, Gray, Jade or Scarlet. And of course, you could try a nature-based name, like Luna, Stella, Wren or Juniper.

But personally, my vote would be for one of the following: Zoey Josephine, which gives you a series of nice, soft sounds throughout the first and middle name, or following in the footsteps of several stars, and giving her James as a middle name.

What middle names do you like with Zoey? Ashley, don’t forget to share your final decision with us! And if you have a baby name dilemma of your own, feel free to share it with me at lamilbrand@gmail.com, or in the comments below!

We almost named our daughter Zoey. And at the time when we were gonna go with that name – Madeline was gonna be the middle name.
We also have a short last name – 1 syllable so I like having Zoey Madeline before it – thought it flowed nicely.

My middle name is Elizabeth and when my daughter was born a wanted a name sake type name but I have never really been attached to the name, Elizabeth. So I looked up alternates for Elizabeth and chose Elise. I had always loved the name and even though I said I would never name her after someone I knew (that wasn’t special to me) I had went to school with a girl named E’lise. Just an idea, it is unique enough you don’t hear it everyday but I think it can be modern or classic. My daughter’s name is Chloe Elise, so pretty close to Zoey Elise lol.

If you can’t decide on just one, go with both! My son has 2 middle names and my daughter has 3. They flow nice when they are spoken. Isaac Mikel Kane & Emma Marie Patricia Anne. They are all family names and we wanted to include everyone dear to us and a way to honor them and pass on tradition. Good luck choosing.

I’m big on tradition, why not go with a family name for example a mother, grandmothers first name as the baby’s middle name. As she grows you can tell her funny stories of the woman she named after, this gives a great sense of belongings.

Ryder, kyler, Chloe, Alexandra, Alexandria, katanah (pronounced ka-taw-na), katalya pronounced (cat-a-lay-a) its a rare orchid that only grows in Columbia, try searching names from your backgrounds so they have meaning to. I like something different and with a story. Examples: your maiden name, the street you live on, where did you & your husband meet, her birthstone, the town your parents met in, your grandmother’s birth month.
Zoey Martin, Zoey Clark, Zoey Boston, Zoey Garnet, Zoey Spencer, Zoey June…not only will she have a unique namer, there is a special meaning & story behind it.
