Has Bad Baby Namer Jason Lee Reformed His Ways?
Actor Jason Lee is infamous for giving his first son the out-there moniker of “Pilot Inspektor.” His daughter didn’t fare well either—she was given the traditionally male name, Casper. (Which is typically synonymous with the cartoon Friendly Ghost). But maybe the third time’s the charm? It certainly seems to be. Jason and his wife Ceren welcomed a baby boy, named Sonny, this week. Sonny is a nickname for a number of different names, including Santino, Madison and Mason—but has on occasion been used in its own right as a first name. It means, not surprisingly, “son.”
Thinking of using this name for your son? You’ll be in good company. While it is not an extremely popular name—it barely ekes above the top 1000 name cut on the Social Security list—it’s certainly not so out there as Pilot and Casper. In fact, it hasn’t been out of the top 1000 names since the 1920s, which means there may just be a Sonny on your family tree.
There are a few famous “Sonnys” in history, including Sonny Bono, entertainer and politician (Sonny was a nickname for Salvatore); Sonny Liston, world-class boxer (officially named “Charles“); and Sonny Jurgenson, a football great. And there’s also Santino (AKA Sonny), the hot-headed oldest Coreleone son in the Godfather series. But I’m almost wondering if Jason is naming Sonny after himself, given the logic of using Sonny as a Mason/Madison nickname.
Personally, I think Jason and Ceren choose a good name for this child—still unique and innovative, but not quite so out there that people
So has Jason Lee finally scored a hit with his third child’s baby name? What’s your take on Jason’s other children’s names? Would you consider any of his kids’ names for your own brood?
