Lisa Loeb’s New Baby Name
It’s a boy for singer Lisa Loeb and her husband Roey Hershkovitz, a music supervisor for Conan. The latest addition, Emet Kuli Loeb Hershkovitz, joins his older sister, Lyla Rose, and has a name that’s truly distinctive.
Emet seems to be an alternative spelling for Emmet, an English name that means “strong worker.” It’s an uncommon name these days (it hasn’t hit the top 1000 since the 1930s), but given the popularity of the “Em” names for girls, like Emily and Emma, it’s a safe bet that Emmet (or Emet!) is on its way back into popularity.
Kuli is a bit trickier to pin down—it could be fashioned after a Hawaiian word meaning “deaf,” or a translation of “coolie” in to Finnish. Most likely, though, it could be a Hebrew word meaning, “I am all.” In any case, it’s an utterly unique middle name for their baby boy.
And of course, adding Loeb as a second middle name is a nice way to honor his mother’s family.
The names are nicely paired with the last name, Hershkovitz—though with a surname that long, a shorter, one-syllable first name might have been even better. I’m thinking that Jack would have had an even more melodious flow with Hershkovitz.
Emet Kuli is an even more distinctive choice than their daughter’s name, Lyla Rose. Lyla, which means “dark beauty,” ranks in the top 150 baby names, and Rose is one of the most popular middle names right now.

As a fellow Lisa, I applaud her decision to choose more unique monikers for her kids, to help them avoid being Emet H. or Lyla H. when they get to school.
So, what do you think? Does Emet Kuli get a thumbs up or a thumbs down? What name do you think works best with a longer surname like Hershkovitz?Add a Comment
