Beyonce’s Baby Girl: The Meaning Behind Her Unique Name
Beyonce and Jay-Z, who welcomed their first child together, a daughter, Saturday night at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, have dazzled us with their baby name choice: Blue Ivy–or is it Ivy Blue? US Weekly and E! Online, among other celebrity news sites, have reported it both ways, so we’ll have to wait until the star couple confirms the news to find out for sure. Either way, we’re not disappointed.
Blue is a distinctive name, but it’s not literally unique the way Beyonce’s own name is. (Her parents coined their eldest daughter’s name by varying the spelling of her mother Tina‘s maiden name Beyince). And the pop diva’s baby girl isn’t the first celebrity baby to be named Blue. Cher and Greg Allmann led the way when they gave this distinctive moniker to their now-grown son Elijah Blue. Then there’s John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s Ella Bleu, rocker The Edge’s Blue Angel, and Alicia Silverstone’s Bear Blu. Former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell has a Bluebell.
Inspired by nature, Ivy is an old-fashioned name that’s starting to make a comeback after a century-long nap. US Weekly reports that the couple chose “Ivy” because of the significance of the number “4″ or “IV,” in their lives. Beyonce and Jay-Z were born on Sept. 4 and Dec. 4, respectively, were married on April 4, 2008, and Beyonce’s latest album is entitled 4.
Both the names Blue and Ivy may have musical antecedents. A film about jazz singer Billie Holiday’s life was called Lady Sings the Blues and another early jazz singer was Ivy Anderson.
Update: The couple released a statement Monday night confirming that their daughter’s name is Blue Ivy, according to People. “We are happy to announce the arrival of our beautiful daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, born on Saturday, January 7, 2012,” the couple said.
