Actress Lindsay Price and Chef Curtis Stone Name Their Son Hudson

Beverly Hills 90210’s Lindsay Price and Australian chef Curtis Stone announced the arrival of their son, Hudson, on November 6. (Read our interview with Price.) What’s the story behind the name the couple chose for their first baby together? Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond  of Nameberry offer their insight on the celebrity baby name.

Hudson, a trendy surname and the name of a river in upstate New York, took off in the mid-nineties. It’s gotten a boost as the last name of Kate Hudson, and its made its way up the popularity chart to its present place of Number 138.  Other celebs who have chosen to name their offspring Hudson include Marcia Gay Hardin, Harvey Keitel, Gena Lee Nolan, and  Drew Lachey.  James Barbour pulled a gender switch when he named his daughter Hudson in 2008.

Hudson literally means “son of Hudd,” which was a nickname for both Hugh and Richard in the Middle Ages.  In its streamlined spelling, Hud was the name of the macho title character of an iconic Paul Newman film; John Mellencamp has a son named Hud.

There are also several notable people with the name Hudson, including explorer Hudson, for whom the river was named, actor Rock, director Hugh, and the musical Hudson Brothers.

Linda Rosenkrantz and Pamela Redmond Satran are the creators of the baby name site Nameberry and the authors of ten bestselling books about names, including Cool Names for Babies and The Baby Name Bible.
