My friend Diane hosted brunch to celebrate her son Zann’s second birthday this morning. Like many tots, Z is Elmo-obsessed and Diane went all out to incorporate touches of the Sesame Street star into the party. There were Elmo balloons, wall hangings, favor bags, and finger puppets. Elmo himself stopped by to pose for pics with the kids. (Mason ran right up to him but his mood turned sour when Elmo picked him up–just look at that grouchy little face.) The brunch spread included egg casserole, banana bread, blueberry muffins, ham, and minted fruit, with juice boxes and milk for the kids and mimosas and coffee for the adults.
I really loved that tower of cupcakes. It had three tiers of chocolate, vanilla, and red velvet cupcakes. Twinkling blue lights, a photo of the birthday boy, and an Elmo balloon made it festive. And it was so easy for the kids to eat the small cakes with their little fingers.
We served cupcakes at Mason’s first birthday party, and after seeing this cool cupcake tower (and remembering how much I loved ours last year), I might have to go with cupcakes again at Mason’s second birthday party. I’ve been pretty set on making Mason a cake, but I could always convert a cake recipe into a cupcake recipe. Luckily I have three months to decide! I’m sure I’ll change my mind 10 times before then:)
Mason tried his first cupcake last June, and the moment couldn’t have been any sweeter. We were in Columbus, OH, visiting my family and my mom made cupcakes to celebrate Bug’s first birthday a little early. She went the simple route and used yellow cake from a mix and vanilla frosting. Mason was tentative at first. He gingerly licked the icing for a minute or so and then he picked up the cupcake and shoved the entire thing in his mouth. I was snapping photos with my iPhone at first but it got so good I switched to video. We were cracking up! (We also served cupcakes at his safari-theme birthday party in New York City; click here for photos! For great recipes, check out these Parents favorites.)
Any great cupcake memories with your babe to share?
Mason and I traveled to Columbus, Ohio, to visit my family this weekend. Unfortunately Chris had to work so he wasn’t able to come with us (yes, I managed to get Mason plus three pieces of luggage on a plane from New York to Columbus and back — all alone!!). We missed Chris so much but we had a blast. Some of my favorite moments: spending time with Christy, a super close friend since middle school, and meeting her gorgeous little girl Lucy for the first time. Hanging out with my grandma, who I admire so much. Watching my mom and Mason play together; I love how much she loves my son. Getting a pedi with my twin sister and my niece, just us girls. Chilling with my aunt and uncle on the deck after dinner. But the best moment of all was when Mason tried a cupcake for the first time.
Mason’s first cupcake was nothing fancy. It was from a mix, just simple yellow cake with vanilla frosting. My Mom made the cupcakes to celebrate Bug’s first birthday early. (He doesn’t turn 1 until August 19 but she won’t be able to make it to New York for the big event.) She made them from a gluten-free mix so I could enjoy them too. Mason was tentative at first, gingerly licking the icing, looking slightly confused. Then he picked it up and shoved the whole thing in his mouth. I was snapping photos with my iPhone at first but it got so good I switched to video. I’ve watched it a hundred times, at least, and I just had to share the moment with all of you. It was so exciting!
How was your weekend? What was your favorite part? Any special moments with your babe?
