Would You Let Your Kids Eat Crickets?

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

I loathe crickets. Nearly a decade ago Chris and I lived in  a “garden apartment” — relator speak for overpriced, dank basement that brownstone owners rent out for exorbitant amounts of money — on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, and the icky creatures were endemic to the place. We couldn’t get rid of them, no matter how hard we tried.

In some parts of the world, however, crickets are a treat. In a 10-minute video commercial that was inspired by a Louis Vuitton campaign Angelina Jolie shot in Cambodia, the birthplace of her oldest son Maddox, Jolie confesses that Maddox and his younger brother Pax “ate crickets like Doritos” while they were visiting the Third World County. She explains that she bought the crickets, considered a delicacy in southeast Asia, for the boys because she “wanted them not to be turned off by something that was of their culture.”

Personally, I applaud Jolie. Exploring a different culture through its culinary traditions is a powerful thing and affording your children that opportunity is a wonderful gift, in my opinion. While I wouldn’t love to see Mason eat a cricket (OK, I’d absolutely hate it), I’d support him if we were in southeast Asia and he wanted to try one. The same goes for any other delicacy that I might think is gross but that is part of another country’s cultural traditions.

What about you? Would you allow your child to eat a cricket or another bug/thing you think is gross for the sake of learning about another culture?
