Crazy for Ketchup

Last weekend we discovered that Mason is obsessed with ketchup. Obsessed. Chris took him out for a guys-only lunch on Saturday, and while he was vague about what he ordered for Mason to eat, I learned that fries were involved (typical when I’m out of the picture). Chris encouraged Mason to dip his fry into some ketchup–apparently dips are a great way to get tots interested in their food–and the expression on Mason’s face went from perplexed after his first taste to absolutely amorous after a few more licks.

I laughed when I heard the story, but I couldn’t quite picture it. Mason has always struck me as more of a guacamole and hummus guy. But Sunday night showed me how wrong I was.

We were at my friend Kerry’s house so that Mason could play with her son Sal (the little shark pictured here), and we decided to order dinner.  The boys split a burger, which Sal happily ate. Mason, on the other hand, slurped handful after handful of ketchup. (Bummed I didn’t get a photo–I was too worried about keeping Mason’s ketchup-covered hands off of  Kerry’s pretty tablecloth!) Of course, I wanted him to eat his burger–we still have weight challenges after all. But the ketchup I gave him to dip it in turned into his entree. Once his ketchup was gone, he went after mine–and kept clamoring for more.

Does your tot love condiments? Were you surprised when you found out?

John hates anything slimy on his hands so we have never given him condiments. We also think it is why he won’t eat mac-n-cheese.

How funny, Ann! Mason freaks if he gets crumbs on his hands. It’s so odd. He’ll sit there and fuss until I get the crumb off his hand!

This reminds me of the Adam Sandler movie “Big Daddy” When he lets the kid pick what every he wants for lunch the kid says “30 packets of ketchup!”

My son, 3, Loves anything he can dip his food into! Whether it be ketchup, ranch, mustard, barbecue, he loves it all! Give him a fork and he’ll be eating straight without actual food!
