6a00d8341c30cf53ef0120a6a641c3970b-250wiWhile it’s true that the Thanksgiving turkey has yet to be carved, Save the Children is calling on all of your pre-K through 12th graders to put their thinking caps on for Valentines Day. From now through December 1, children can create their own unique Valentines Day cards and enter to win the grand prize—a $500 savings bond, as well as the opportunity to meet spokeswoman and Save the Children Artist Ambassador Julianna Moore and to join her during press appearances to promote the cards in January.

Select Valentines Day cards will be posted online in mid-December, and kids can vote for their favorites in each of the five age-specific categories. The five winning designs, one for each age group, will be printed on cards available in January and offered as part of a gift with a donation to benefit Save the Children’s anti-poverty programs in the United States. Ok…it's my last chance to obsess over Valentine crafts. If you are still feeling uninspired in the world of love-filled projects, this should fill your void. What would we do without these amazingly creative people, sharing their amazingly creative ideas? I shudder at the thought.

Starting from top left: Matchbox treats from Inchmark; Newspaper heart garland from Maya Made via Whip Up; Lunch bag from Zakka Life; Butterfly valentine from Skip to my Lou; Salt dough conversation hearts from Kiddio via The Crafty Crow; Chocolate Pretzel Buttons from Enamor via The Crafty Crow; Hearts on a stick from Plum Pudding; Tic tac toe hearts from Alpha Mom.

Come to think of it, is it love or crafts that make the world go 'round? It really is a toss up. Happy Valentine's Day!

Free Adorable Animal Valentines

And now back to our regularly scheduled V-day kidsfest. If you're looking for cute, cheap Valentine's stuff for the kiddos, look no further than the fabulous (and generous!) Secret Agent Josephine. She posted these printable animal valentines (which are way cuter than the usual drugstore fill-in-a-character-here fare), and they're free to boot! If your kid isn't handing out valentines at school yet, there's also a black and white colorable version. Can grown-ups give out valentines too?

Help: Cheap But Sweet Valentine’s Ideas?

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Lightheart
Despite the fact that even my local Trader Joe's has been mega-blinged out with V-day decorations for weeks, I haven't really processed the idea that it's actually this weekend. Oops. My guy and I don't get each other big gifts but I would like make him something small and sweet. I'd prefer to make rather than buy—especially given the state of the economy—but what can you whip up for a guy? My craft skills tend toward the girly, so unless he'd like an embroidered flowered hankie, I'm gonna need some help.

I haven't had any luck online, because everywhere I look the projects I find are for mums and kids. (Of course, maybe that's just because my slice of the Web is chockablock full of mommy blogs.) I digress. Here's the question:

Are you doing or making something for your hubby/significant other for Valentine's Day? I'm desperate for some creative, thoughtful, and cheap ideas. Please share!

For Book Lovers

Heart+bookmark+2
I seriously can't help myself—when Valentine's Day comes around, I'm a major sucker for love-inspired crafts. I picked this one from Zakka Life because (a) it looks cool and sophisticated; (b) a kid can do it; and (c) it's useful. You can get these sequins at any craft store (or similar ones at Amazon.com) and all you have to do is knot them onto a piece of yarn. Yes, it's that easy.

Now that's a perfect craft in my book!

If you're not a fan of those chalky little hearts full of wuv, but are a fan of LOLCAT macros, try this recipe out for size. These tasty shortbread treats are full of win, luv, flavor, and awesome.

This idea comes to us courtesy of our friendly neighborhood Evil Mad Scientists

Candy-cane-heart
Candy-cane-heart-cupcake

Valentine's Day is a mere two weeks away, so I think it's a fine time to start sharing some cute, heartfelt ideas for this year's love fest. How adorable (and easy) are these heart-shaped candy canes from Skip to my Lou? If you happen to have a leftover bag of these traditional Christmas candies, then you have no excuse not to make these. And really…don't we all want our Valentines to have good breath?
