How Toddlers Thrive: A Bookload of Advice

Thursday, February 13th, 2014

Last night, I attended the book launch party for Dr. Tovah P. Klein’s latest work How Toddlers Thrive: What Parents Can Do Today for Children Ages 2-5 to Plant the Seeds of Lifelong Success to be released on shelves February 18. Dr. Klein is the director of the Barnard College Center for Toddler Development (aka the Toddler Center) in New York City and a mother of three who has been studying, observing, and analyzing toddlers for over twenty years. Tovah (as I know her) also happens to have been my college advisor at Barnard and my professor when I enrolled in the Toddler Center seminar as a senior undergrad interested in child development.

How Toddlers Thrive is the culmination of Tovah’s research and experiences, divulging to the masses the coveted Toddler Center philosophy to raise successful, well-adjusted kids—a philosophy that actress and Toddler Center mom alumnus Sarah Jessica Parker treasures.

All three of Parker’s children graduated the Toddler Center program, which operates like a preschool on campus. As a student in the seminar, I spent one morning a week as a student-teacher in the 2-year-old class and one afternoon a week under Tovah’s tutelage about the toddler brain. By the end of a year, I have to say that I felt ahead of the curve (seeing as my child-bearing years were far off). In her forward to the book, Parker describes how working with Tovah and the Toddler Center allowed her to transition from an overwhelmed parent to a confident one, equipping her with “the tools to parent each of them that works in ways for them [the kids].”

Parker and I chatted about how eye-opening the Toddler Center was for her as a parent and myself as a student. “This idea that you praise effort, and when your child comes home with art from school you don’t say to them ‘What is that?’ but instead say ‘Oh, I see you used the color orange. Why did you choose that color?’” Parker said is empowering. She explained that in an exchange like this the parent lets go of adult interpretations and relieves the pressure that a toddler may feel to answer a question they weren’t prepared for. According to Tovah’s work, asking a question like “What is that?” to a child that didn’t intend it to be anything may cause him to be confused or concerned that he didn’t do it “right.” But asking questions about what he did do (use the color orange) allows him to feel pride.

How Toddlers Thrive illustrates numerous teachable moments like this one, from understanding the toddler mind in Part I to working through the day to day of toddlerhood in Part II. Reading it brought back memories of sitting in class: Tovah’s voice truly shines through as a comforting but firm guide to your child’s formative years.

Are stripes the new black?

We couldn’t help but notice several striped garments on some of our favorite celebrity families. From January Jones’ matchy-matchy look with her son Xander, to Sarah Jessica Parker‘s mini fashionista twin daughters, to Charlize Theron‘s adorable tot, let’s see who’s embracing stripes this season.

January Jones

Mad Men star January Jones was all smiles with her 2-year-old son Xander on September 25. The adorable duo stepped out in matching striped shirts while out and about in Pasadena, Calif.

Sarah Jessica Parker

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick‘s 4-year-old twin daughters stepped out in stripes on September 25 in New York City. Not matching entirely, Loretta kept it cool in black and white stripes, while Tabitha spiced it up with red and white.

Charlize Theron

Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron was spotted with son Jackson, 17 months, in West Hollywood, Calif. on September 25. The adorable tot rocked a red and white striped top as they stepped out to Coffee Bean for an iced beverage to go.

Halle Berry

Expectant mama Halle Berry stepped out for a smoothie at Jamba Juice in Studio City, Calif. on September 23. In the final stages of her pregnancy, the Academy Award-winner, 47, looked lovely in a blue and white striped maxi maternity dress and flip flops.

Sporting matching stripes with her son, reality star Kourtney Kardashian brought Mason, 3, and Penelope, 14 months, to a birthday party at Play Source in Los Angeles, Calif. on September 15. Earlier that same day, they attended the Thomas & Friends: King of the Railway premiere at The Grove.

10 Celebrities Who Used Surrogates to Conceive

Friday, February 22nd, 2013

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

CelebrityBabyScoop is taking a look at 10 celebrities who have used a surrogate mother to expand their families. From Elton John, to Nicole Kidman, to Giuliana Rancic, to Sarah Jessica Parker, hear how gestational carriers have helped change the lives of some high-profile families.

Elton John
Sir Elton John and David Furnish welcomed their second son Elijah on January 11, 2013. The doting daddies used the same surrogate mother for their 2-year-old son Zachary.

“She is a wonderful, kind and loving woman,” Elton said of their surrogate, who thinks of her as “part of our family.”

The couple used the same egg donor for both boys and have chosen not to find out either of their son’s paternity.

Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban welcomed daughter Sunday on July 8, 2008. But after a “roller-coaster ride with fertility,” the couple used a gestational carrier for their second child, now 2-year-old daughter Faith.

“Having given birth and then being there to see my child born in that way, I felt so much love for our surrogate, gestational carrier,” Nicole said.

The Academy Award-winner went on to discuss why she uses the term “gestational carrier” as opposed to “surrogate” – something she was criticized for in the days following the announcement of Faith’s birth.

“We were trying to be accurate,” she shared. “The term ‘gestational carrier’ is used if it’s your biological child and if it isn’t, then you use ‘surrogate.’ I mean, who knows what it is. But she’s the most wonderful woman to do this for us.”

Elizabeth Banks
What to Expect When You’re Expecting actress Elizabeth Banks and husband Max Handelman have welcomed both sons – Felix, nearly 2, and Magnus, 3 months – via surrogate mother.

“Like Felix, Magnus was born via gestational surrogate,” she shared. “This experience has exceeded all expectations, taught us a great deal about generosity and gratitude, and established a relationship that will last a lifetime. I am also so very thankful to our family and friends for their support throughout this process, as well as the Center for Surrogate Parenting for helping make all this possible.”

“It was a womb issue for me. Embryos wouldn’t implant,” she said of her fertility issues. “It’s a big leap, inviting this person into your life to do this amazing, important thing for you. And it’s hard losing that kind of control. But our surrogate is so extraordinary, and she’s still in our lives. She’s like an auntie.”

Neil Patrick Harris
How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris and partner David Burtka are dads to 2-year-old twins Harper and Gideon. The Doogie Houser alum opened up about welcoming the twins via surrogate mother.

“We really, really wanted kids,” NPH said. “We really had thought it through financially, emotionally, relationship-wise. We didn’t just accidentally get pregnant and decide that now we need to make this work. These kids come into our world with nothing but love.”

The handsome couple talked the science behind the birth of the fraternal twins, revealing each father fertilized one egg and the twins were carried and born via one surrogate.

Burtka explained that the twins were conceived by “two eggs, two embryos, one of mine, one of his.”

The couple knew the surrogate, whom Burtka described as “more like the oven.” And they found an anonymous egg donor through a donation bank where they were able to research her personal and medical history.

Happy In Hollywood: 10 Strong Celebrity Marriages

Tuesday, December 4th, 2012

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

After nine years of marriage to Michael Stone, we were sorry to hear Mayim Bailiks divorce announcement last week.

But they’re not the only ones. It seems there’s a new split every other week among Hollywood’s couples. But there’s a few duos that keep the flame burning in Tinseltown. From David and Victoria Beckham’s 13-year union, to Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick’s two decade-plus marriage, let’s take a look at 10 Hollywood couples with strong marriages.

1. David and Victoria Beckham

David and Victoria Beckham are practically British royalty. Dubbed ‘Posh and Becks’ by the media, the longtime couple have been married for 13 years.

Seemingly blissful since their July 1999 wedding, the British power couple have four children together: sons Brooklyn, 13, Romeo, 10, and Cruz, 7, and 1-year-old daughter Harper.

“Our house is a really happy house,” Victoria said. “There are kids running around and laughing and joking, I smile so much more than people would think. There’s nothing better than being in LA with my kids, cooking dinner with my husband and having a romantic night in…I’m growing older with the most amazing man I’ve ever met – with my soul mate. Life’s great.”

2. Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck

Married for 7 years, Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck seem like one of the happiest couples in Hollywood with their three children: daughters Violet, nearly 7, and Seraphina, nearly 4, and 9-month-old son Samuel.

The Garflecks, who wed in June 2005, seem like the perfect match.

“Jennifer played such a profound role in making me a better person,” Ben said. “We don’t have a perfect marriage, but she inspired me; and finding myself in that marriage and having a child dovetailed with getting to be a little more mature.” He added of his wife, “She truly is kind. She means no one any harm. She doesn’t have ill will for any person. She’s not competitive with other people. She’s not spiteful. It’s one of those things where it becomes almost aggravating at times. Every time I go, ‘F— him!’ I see in her face that she just thinks that’s petty and small.”

3. Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

Rockstar couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale have been married for 10 years and appear to have the perfect family-of-four with their two sons, Kingston, 6, and Zuma, 4.

After celebrating their 2002 wedding with three ceremonies, the No Doubt frontwoman recently said marriage can be hard, but a dream come true.

“My biggest accomplishment is my marriage so far,” Gwen said. “Because it’s hard, everyone knows it’s hard. [Marriage] is something that I always wanted to do successfully. It was a dream of mine. I like the official-ness and the family-ness of it all, having the same name and making decisions together.”

She went on to say they are closer than ever after a decade together.

“[Our relationship] is better than it’s ever been. Like, we’re learning about each other all the time. He’s an amazing dad, he works so hard – I can hear him writing songs through the wall, and it is at a much quicker pace than me! He balances me out. And he – he never stops liking me, which is awesome! It makes me feel happy, that someone likes me as much as he does.”
