Real Glam Moms: “A Genuine Smile is the Best Thing You Can Put on Your Face”

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

Cassie Bustamante (Jalapeno Photography)

Meet Cassie Bustamante. She’s the face behind Primitive and Proper, your new go-to for all things vintage furniture, thrifting and interior decor ideas, and mom to Sawyer, 9; and Emerson,7. Cassie started blogging as a way to promote her furniture refinishing business, but now she helps run a vintage barn sale in Maryland.

What is your beauty routine like?

I keep things pretty quick and efficient.  After I shower, I moisturize and use an eye cream, then it’s under-eye concealer, a little blush, lip gloss, and mascara.  If I am going out, I will wear eyeshadow and eyeliner.

How has your beauty routines changed since you had children?

I stopped getting pedicures, manicures, the periodic facials, and I now spend much less time in the shower!

What is the importance of taking time to yourself?

My life is so busy with my business, my family and my blog that I crave time just for me.  Most days I run or take my dogs for a hike, and the fresh air allows me to think, focus and decrease my stress.  And I always notice that stress takes a toll on my skin. Exercise and alone time keep my stress levels down, and keep my emotions in check.

The best beauty advice I’ve ever received is… A genuine smile is the best thing you can put on your face.

My beauty advice for moms is…  Those sweet little eyes look at you with nothing but love and see you as the most beautiful woman in the world—just as yourself—with no makeup on.  Remember not to judge yourself too harshly because those eyes are watching you and will start to judge, too, or doubt themselves.

Have your children ever commented on your makeup or beauty routine?

Ha! Yes, just last week we were headed off to get family photos taken, and Emmy had a little patch of dry skin on her chin, so I told her I wanted to put concealer on it.  She said, “Is that the makeup you put on your forehead to cover your zits?  Because you do have zits on your forehead.”

PRIMITIVE AND PROPER’S FIVE FAVES

Bare Ecentuals Pretty Amazing Lipcolor

1. Black Sparrow Soaps Dead Sea Mud Mask: This mask helps minimize my pores and keeps my skin feeling smooth.  It’s also locally made, and I prefer to buy local when I can!

2. Under eye concealer: I am not super picky about this, but I prefer it to come in a stick!  Since having kids, I find this to be an instant face lift!

3. Burt’s Bees Naturally Nourishing Milk & Honey Body Lotion: It smells soft and subtly sweet and leaves my legs feeling smooth.  It’s also gentle enough to use on my children.

4. Eco Natural Soaps Blush in Pink Rose: This blush goes on beautifully and leaves me with the perfect glow.

5. Bare Escentuals Pretty Amazing Lipcolor in Confidence: I love this lipstick! It applies much like a gloss and stays on like a stain, which is great for this low-maintenance mama!

Real Glam Moms: “I Do Better and Am More Motivated When I Look My Best.”

Ashley Brickner and her family

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

For one Real Glam Mom, her blog is like an online scrapbook for her child. Ashley Brickner, created Words About Waverly for her 2-year-old daughter Waverly Maye to look back on one day “to see what her childhood was like and the fun things [they] did.” With a fashion marketing teacher as a mom, Waverly has had quite a chicly dressed childhood. I even envy some of her outfits! This week, we caught up with Ashley to learn more about how she keeps Waverly busy when she’s doing her makeup and her favorite hair products.

What is your beauty routine like?

I do the Proactiv three-step routine each morning and evening—either as soon as I wake up or right before I go to sleep. I find that I see a change in my skin immediately if I miss a couple days or if I forget to take off my makeup.  Makeup is the quickest part of my routine. I take about 10 minutes in the morning and use mostly MAC products. My hair is long and thick, so it definitely takes the longest. I dry my hair at night and curl it in the mornings using a wand to create textured waves.

How has your beauty routines changed since you had Waverly?

Definitely the time. I have way less time to focus on getting myself ready these days.  I find that breaking up my routine—drying my hair at night, curling it in the morning—helps to get it done. Also, I try to distract my daughter BEFORE I begin by pulling out her books or giving her an assortment of her “own” makeup, which is really just all my old packages that I have already used.

The importance of taking time to yourself is… HUGE.  This is my biggest challenge as a mom—especially a working mom. I have a complete type-A personality and have always found it hard to relax. Yet ultimately, I am a better mother when I take the time for myself as I am rejuvenated to really focus on my daughter when I am with her.

The best beauty advice I’ve ever received is… to take care of my skin—especially as I get older.  I have fair skin, and when in the sun, I always wear sunscreen and stay away from tanning beds. I also aim to follow my skin care routine each day. It can be a pain, but I know how important it is!

Do you have any beauty advice for moms?

Don’t lose your sense of style or feeling good about yourself. I still take pride in my appearance—most days!—because I feel I do better and am more motivated when I look my best.

Has your daughter ever commented on your makeup or beauty routine?

YES!  She becomes more interested in it all the time, which makes me very happy! She loves to brush her hair, watch me put on makeup, and imitate what I do. I love buying her accessories and her own “makeup” tools to play with.

WORDS ABOUT WAVERLY’S FIVE FAVES

1.   Proactive+: It has always worked for me since high school, and I see a difference in my skin when I don’t use it.

2.    MAC Prep + Prime: I use this before I put on my foundation, and it is SUCH a difference maker, makes my skin soft, and the foundation go on more smoothly.

3.    Target Makeup Remover Wipes: Great for getting off all your makeup and making your skin feel clean and refreshed.

4.   Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo & Conditioner: Cheap and effective! I have never found it worthwhile to spend a lot of money of shampoo and conditioner.

5.     Essie nail polish in Chinchilly: Essie is my favorite brand of nail polish. As a mom, I don’t have the time for manicures anymore, so this is the next best thing!

Real Glam Moms: “Polishing your nails becomes much more sacred after having kids”

Kate Bryan

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

For simple how-tos on all the cute hairstyles you see on Pinterest, Kate Bryan, of The Small Things, is your girl. And for chic mommy tips, Kate’s  still your girl. She’s mom to David, 10 months old, and she’s 5 months with her second. Today she chats with us about switching up her lipstick shades and her favorite nail polish.

What is your beauty routine like?

I like taking time to do my hair and makeup in the morning, but I always stick to my usual, streamlined routine. I shower, throw my hair in a towel to encourage it to dry as I do my makeup, then blow dry, throw a few loose curls in it with a 1 1/4 barrel curling iron, and finish with some hairspray.

How has your beauty routine changed since you had David?

My beauty routine hasn’t changed too dramatically. I wear more neutral shades of lipstick instead of bold colors since my days are more casual. I find myself going a day between washing my hair every once in awhile on days where I’m just cleaning up the house or running errands.

What is the importance of taking time to do yourself?

Personally, I feel more awake and ready to take on the day when I start it with a shower. Even if it’s just a quick five-minute shower, it helps me feel like I’m intentionally getting ready for the day instead of lounging around in sweats.

My beauty advice for moms is…  to not give up entirely on your beauty routine! Even if it’s a swipe of mascara, taking the time to put a little bit of effort into yourself will always pay off. Also, find a long-wear nail polish that doesn’t chip. Polishing your nails becomes much more sacred after having kids, and nothing is more frustrating than taking the time to do so only to end up with a chip the next day!

Habit nail polish

THE SMALL THINGS’ FIVE FAVES

1. Shu Uemura eyelash curler: No lash curler comes close to how well this one works.

2. Bite Beauty BB for Lips in Flush is the perfect “your lips but better” shade.

3. IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Anti-Aging Concealer: Say goodbye to dark circles with this product. It covers better than any concealer I’ve used.

4. Tarte Best in Faux Lash Extending Fibers add bulk to even the wimpiest lashes.

5. Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Luminous Light is the perfect highlighter and even light eyeshadow shade for any skin color.

6. Habit Cosmetics nail polish in Sunset Boulevard: I love the grey blue shade for any season.

Real Glam Moms: “I put on a little lipstick, and my three-year-old son asked if I was bleeding”

Kate Baer

MEET THE LIFE  & WRITINGS OF KATE BAER

With the help of deep breaths, grace and nachos,Kate Baer finds the time to juggle caring for Waylon (3) and Eva (8 months), posting on her blog, The Life & Writings of Kate Baeur, and taking time to herself. I’ve taken a couple cues from her book recommendations, and you should, too!

What is your beauty routine like?

Sometimes I wear mascara. Sometimes I take it off.

How has your beauty routines changed since you had Waylon and Eva?

Last week, I put on a little lipstick, and my three-year-old son asked if I was bleeding, so there’s that. Honestly I just keep it simple. A little mascara, eyeliner, and bronzer, if I’m feeling fancy.

What is the importance of taking time to do so?

If I can wake up, brush my teeth, put my hair in a long braid, and throw on some mascaraI feel like I can conquer the world. Or at least make it until second lunch.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve received?

“If you retain nothing else, always remember the most important rule of beauty, which is: who cares?” -Tina Fey, my spirit guide.

My beauty advice for moms is… if you have pants on, you’re winning.

THE LIFE & WRITINGS OF KATE BAER’S FAVES

1.     L’Oreal Telescopic Mascara is the bee’s knees.

2.     Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes to take it off. I could not live without those magic wipes.

Bridget Hunt of Tales of Me and the Husband

MEET TALES OF ME AND THE HUSBAND

Bridget Hunt has a big brood. There’s Nathaniel, 21;  Jordan, 19;  William, 14;  Lindsey, 12; and  Parker, 3.  Are you tired yet? Well, that’s not it! Bridget and her husband, Steve, have another baby on the way in December! Then there’s her blog, Tales of Me and the Husband, where she write about all her kids, favorite recipes, health tips and how she met her husband, and posts pretty picture accompaniments.

What is your beauty routine like?

Less is more. And that’s not because that’s necessarily my motto; instead, I’m spinning a potential negative into a positive!  Glass is half full—for today anyway! I don’t have a lot of time, so when on the run, it’s always a little under-eye concealer, swipe of blush, mascara and eyebrow pencil—the last being a more recent addition and now has become an absolute necessity. How many years I went with almost invisible eyebrows!

Do you have any beauty advice for moms?

It’s amazing how much more I get done when I feel good, and it’s amazing how I manage to feel good (or pretty good, anyway) if I don’t look like crap.  So a little bit of makeup and a decent outfit go a long way.  My hair routine, however, is “throw it up in a bun.”  Luckily, buns have a way of looking a little polished—or at least that’s what I tell myself.

TALES OF ME AND THE HUSBAND’S FAVES

1. Nars lipsticks:  They STAY ON—especially the matte ones.

2. Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz: The best!  Invisible eyebrows, be gone!

3. Benefit Cosmetics High Beam: When I’m feeling a little fancy (and have a summer tan going), this gives this lovely dewey look to your cheekbones!

Real Glam Moms: “It’s important to remember that you have to take care of yourself”

Ruth of Viva Veltoro

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

Following the birth of her son, whom she calls “Wubba,” Ruth V. moved to a new town. To connect with other moms and feel a little less lonely, she began to blog. Wubba is now 2 years old, and her blog, Viva Veltoro, is filled with great posts about her favorite products, recipes and places. We caught up with her to find out more about her favorite products beyond baby gear and how she she juggles blogging and parenting with “me” time.

What is your beauty routine like?

I wash my face every morning and night and never go to bed with make-up on—ever! On days when I don’t have a lot of time, I use BB cream even out my skin tone and to protect against UV damage and just apply a simple coat of mascara. On days where I need a more complete look, I use bareMinerals for full coverage. Their make-up is fantastic! It’s not too heavy, but it lasts! I also swear by the sock bun!  It’s my favorite trick for when I’m running late and don’t have time to blowout or curl my hair.

How has your beauty routines changed since you had children?

I try to keep my skincare routine easy, but after I had my son, my skin changed a lot. I became prone to breakouts and had uneven skin tone and melasma.

What is the importance of taking time to yourself?

It’s really important to take some time and focus on yourself.  Since I’m a stay-at-home mom, I barely wore makeup or styled my hair for the first year after my son was born.  I got in a rut and just didn’t feel great about myself.  Styling your hair, putting on a little tinted moisturizer, some lip gloss and mascara can really go a long way!

How do you find time to focus on yourself, your blog and your family?

I’ll admit that I put my family and blog before myself, but I try to carve out little spots of “me” time here and there.  Even just taking a long, hot shower or bath without little ones around can seem like a total luxury sometimes, but it’s important to remember that you have to take care of yourself, too. I work much better in the morning, so if I have deadlines or special projects I want to get done, I’ll wake up earlier than everyone else to have that alone time to work in peace.

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve received?

My mom told me when I was a teenager to never wear makeup to bed. I’m proud to report that I never have.  She also told me how important it is to protect your face from the sun, so I try to wear sunscreen (or BB cream) with UV protection.

Do you have any beauty advice for moms?

Always wash your face before bed, drink lots of water (it’s great for your skin!), and it’s never too early to start using anti-aging eye cream!

CoverGirl Bombshell Volume mascara

VIVA VELTORO’S FIVE FAVES

1. Olay Fresh Effects BB Cream : I LOVE it!

2. CoverGirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlast Mascara: It’s affordable and gives you a lot of volume!

3. bareMinerals Get Started Complexion Kit: Everything you need to for a flawless look.

4. Rodan + Fields Unblemish Regimen with spot fading toner: Although it’s a four-part system, it’s surprisingly easy, and I’m getting great results.

5. Crest White Strips: They make a HUGE difference, especially if you’re a coffee drinker.  I use them every few months to keep my smile bright.

Real Glam Moms: “Retaining who you are and feeling good about yourself helps you be a better mom”

Megan Davey

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

Megan Davey runs Chasing Davies, a personal style blog. In between posts on outfits you’ll lust over, you’ll find adorable pics of her 9-month-old daughter, Nora, and 2-and-a-half year old son, Liam. We’re a bit obsessed with her bold lipstick picks in her Favorite Wears column, so she was a clear pick for RGM.

What is your beauty routine like?

As efficient as possible! Mornings are not my favorite, so I do whatever I can the night before—like shower. I go to bed with wet hair, and in the morning, it’s wild but dry. I fix it with a curling iron while applying my 5-minute makeup!

How has your beauty routines changed since you had your children?

Since becoming a mom, I have gotten more efficient and simpler. I wash may hair less (but it’s actually been good for it!), wear less makeup, typically just concentrate on one feature to accent and wear lipstick way more (easiest thing to apply to make a pop).

How do you find time to focus on yourself, your blog and your family?

I’ve always been a person who likes to be busy! I have a strong capability for multitasking and love fulfilling my creative side, while being a mom, too. I could probably use a little more sleep, but for now, I’m making the most of every waking hour!

Do you have any beauty advice for moms?

Don’t feel bad about taking some time for yourself, even if it’s only 5 minutes! Ultimately, retaining who you are and feeling good about yourself helps you be a better mom.

Nars lipstick

CHASING DAVIES’ FIVE FAVES

  1. Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Eraser Dark Circle Treatment Concealer in Brightener: This completely hides away those under eye bags and dark circles you get from lack of sleep.
  2. bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation Broad Spectrum SPF 20: Three-in-one products are my favorite! This product is sunscreen, foundation and acts as concealer all in one.
  3. Nars Semi Matte Lipstick in Heat Wave: It’s the perfect orange-red lipstick that goes on smooth and lasts most of the day with just one application.
  4. Olay Regenerist Instant Fix Wrinkle Revolution Complex Primer: You can feel a difference in your skin right away, and it smooths fine lines quickly.
  5. L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Extra-Volume Collagen Mascara: I mix up my mascara often, but this is my go-to time after time for thick, long lashes from one bottle.

Real Glam Moms: “We all have those days where we skip getting ready completely”

Wednesday, September 17th, 2014

Lauren and her daughter, Viola

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

Let’s be real: A little part of us all wishes we were Jackie O. Or maybe that’s just Lauren Bryan Knight and me.

A little part of us all should aspire to be Lauren, too! The Texas native not only runs Aspiring Kennedy and is a mom to her oh-so-cute 1-and-a-half year-old daughter, Viola, she gets to do it all while living in London. Her travel guides will fill you with wanderlust, and her food posts will make your stomach growl.

What is your beauty routine like?

My beauty routine is very casual. I have many of the same products that I’ve been using since college in my makeup bag today. After finding what works for my skin and face, it cuts out one less round of decision making. Plus my hair is really thick, so it limits the options: up or down; clean or dirty!

How has your beauty routines changed since you had your daughter?

I have definitely learned to embrace the top knot. I don’t have two hours to wash and straighten my hair like I used to. Every two weeks, I have someone that comes to my house and blows it out for me at 7:30 a.m. She only charges $40! It’s a splurge but one that keeps my hair from being permanently in a nest on the top of my head. It helps me look—and feel—a bit more professional.

What is the importance of taking time to yourself?

We all have those days where we skip getting ready completely. That’s life as a mom—someone who is self-employed or being in school. I think it’s important to be okay with that version of yourself. However, I think many moms feel a loss of self and pride when they have a baby. The time they used to spend getting ready is soaked up by a baby. Taking five minutes to pull yourself together helps maintain confidence and pushes you to remember that there is a world outside of your living room.

How do you find time to focus on yourself, your blog, and your family?

Well the truth is: I don’t! When life gets too busy, I neglect the blog. I don’t feel bad about it either. It’s supposed to serve as a complement to my life. I never want to be a slave to it. The time I used to spend meandering Pinterest and other blogs for inspiration are gone. When I sit down to blog these days, I blog and then I’m finished. It actually keeps my content more original because I’m thinking of it on the bus or in the shower. The ideas come from my thoughts, and not because of something I’ve just seen elsewhere.

The best beauty advice I’ve ever received is… stop washing your hair so often.

My beauty advice for moms is.. Spend a little more and invest in good products. You’ll use them, you’ll look better, and you’ll feel a bit more like a grown up, too.

 ASPIRING KENNEDY’S FIVE FAVES

1. Bioderma Crealine H2O Makeup Remover: I buy this in France, and it’s literally like water on your faceexcept all your makeup is gone! No stingy eyes or oily gunk. It’s amazing.

YSL Mascara

2. Yves Saint Laurent Mascara Volume Effet Faux Cils: It’s expensive, but it’s worth it. Your lashes look amazing, and it smells so good. (Which is kind of weird, right?)

3.  Chanel Vitalumiere Aqua Foundation: Again, this feels like water going on, but the coverage is fantastic. Plus it has SPF, which is really important to me.

4. Susan Posnick COLORFLO mineral blush: I adore the Susan Posnick makeup line. All of the pieces are designed so smart, and the mineral foundation has amazing natural SPF. I love having the powder and brush combo. It’s one less thing to tote around and makes your face look flawless in pictures.

5. Bvlgari Eau Parfumée Au Thé Blanc Shampoo and Shower Gel: If you’re ever staying at a hotel with these bath products, raid the maid’s cart. Or buy a big bottle at Nordstrom. Your whole house will smell gorgeous.

Real Glam Moms: “A good vibrant lipstick goes a long way!”

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

Ayesha Curry

Here’s the newest installment of a brand new series from the Parents beauty department about mommy bloggers. Each installment will feature what beauty means to real moms no matter what their beauty routine is like—and how they take time to themselves after having children.

We don’t like to play favorites, but we have to admit something. RGM was inspired by this week’s mom and her quick makeup routine video.

In February 2013, Ayesha Curry created Little Lights of Mine. Through YouTube videos on recipes and family fun with her 2-year-old daughter Riley, she shares all she is thankful for as a stay-at-home mom. I discovered Ayesha back in April when I watched her Husband Tag video. I was less focused on her basketball star hubby, Stephen Curry, and more on her flawless lilac lipstick.

What is your beauty routine like?

I only buy products that I know I could use everyday if I wanted to. They have to be easy to apply and sort of effortless.

How has your routine changed since you had your daughter?

There was a short time where my routine was nonexistentthe newborn phase. The only thing I reached for was mascara. Now that she can occupy herself for a short period of time, I can get a nice natural makeup look on my face in under five minutes. So I guess my time to apply has changed significantly since having Riley.

What is the importance of taking time to yourself?

I think you just feel better about yourself! Of course we don’t need makeup all of the time, but it’s nice to feel fabulous every now and then.

How do you find time to focus on your blog, your family, and yourself?

It’s always a work in progress. We play around with our schedules to see what works best each week. No two days are ever the same. We love to plan family outings ahead of time and always set aside time for family dinner. Nap times are usually when my best blogging is accomplished. I’ve acquired the skill of multi-tasking since becoming a mommy. Oh the perks!

What’s the best beauty advice you’ve ever received?

Wash your face before bedtime, and always wear sunscreen!

Do you have any beauty advice for moms?

A good vibrant lipstick goes a long way! Perfect for those days when you’re tired and don’t feel like doing much to your face.

The Honest Co. Healing Balm

LITTLE LIGHTS OF MINE’S FIVE FAVES

1. Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil: I love a good strong brow! It’s my no. 1 go to.

2.  Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara: Hands down, the best mascara I’ve used. It’s super easy to apply, and it lengthens and volumes like no other.

3. Coconut oil: It’s so multipurpose! I use it to remove makeup before washing my face, as a moisturizer, hair mask, and of course, to cook!

4. The Honest Co. Healing Balm: This works wonders on my lips and cuticles. I also use it during diaper changes for Riley when I notice a little redness. It vanishes within hours.

5. MAC lipstick: I love a vibrant lip! Red, orange pink! They just do it the best. My favorite colors right now are : Velvet Teddy, Chili, Pink Pigeon, and Morange.
