Dress Up Time! Halloween Costumes for the Pregnant Set

Wednesday, September 10th, 2014

Whether you want to flaunt your bump this Halloween or would prefer to hold onto your exciting secret a little bit longer, these ideas will see you through the costume party season.

Put that bump on display:

That go-to Disney Princess costume can wait! You finally have a bump to show off and are eager to incorporate it into your Halloween getup. Take a look at these options. Still undecided? Check out these other pregnant Halloween costumes

No matter how old you get, Halloween is always about the candy. Dressing up as a gumball machine is not only sweet, it allows you to make the most of that belly! Picture an adult-sized version of this costume from Pinterest. Clever and functional!

Love the outdoors? Dress up as Mother Earth by wearing a mix of greens and blues, and then pin a printout of the globe to your bump. Get it?! It’s also a great budget-friendly idea.

 Source

Britney fan? Go “Baby One More Time” on your friends by dressing up in a Spears-inspired school girl outfit that’s pretty punny. Make sure to flaunt that belly! This is perfect for moms undergoing their second or third pregnancy.

Put that bump away:

Maybe you haven’t spilled the beans yet, or maybe you just want to go through one day of your life without someone asking you when you’re due (hey, Halloween is all about pretending to be someone else!). These costumes are for you.

You’re tired all the time and baggy clothes have never felt so good. So why not incorporate this getup into a costume? Save yourself from hours of primping and don a “bed head” look. All you need is a pair of cute pajama pants, a robe (an oversized option will help conceal a growing belly), and some bunny slippers. Twist some plastic curlers in your hair, and you’re good to go. If you’re feeling extra spirited, swap out your purse for a pillow case.

Go Risky Business this Halloween. Borrow an oversized white oxford shirt from your guy, slip on a pair of sunglasses (and maybe some spandex if the button down isn’t quite long enough to wear in public!) and channel your inner Tom Cruise all while concealing that bump.

Source

You can’t go wrong with a classic pumpkin costume! Channel your five-year-old self and cover your bod, as seen below. Hard to tell what’s underneath! If you do decide to make the big reveal, these pumpkin-painted pregnancy bellies are pretty clever!

How to Dress Now That You’re Pregnant

Tuesday, July 29th, 2014

Not only has baby gear changed since our mothers were pregnant, but maternity fashion has, too-thanks goodness! However, what to wear for different occasions can still be a hassle.

Ten years ago Baukjen de Swaan Arons, founder of Isabella Oliver, had something in common with a lot of women during her first pregnancy–she found it really tricky to dress successfully.

“I’ve always said that I made every mistake in the book, and I really did. There’s more choice today but women still struggle with the same dilemmas – how to look smart for work with a growing bump, elegant for a wedding and what the best investment pieces might be,” she says.

To answer these questions more effectively, Isabella Oliver launched an eStylist service–an online styling initiative–making shopping while pregnant fun and efficient. “Our eStylist service gives women the opportunity to book a time with one of our experts, and ask them, via video or phone, for a little assistance,” she said. “It’s totally free of charge and has been really well-received.”

Real questions that the eStylist has helped with are:

1. I am 3 months pregnant and have no idea how big I’m going to get. I used to wear a size 4 but am currently shopping for clothes in size M. What would you advise?

Your pre-pregnancy size is also your maternity size so there’s no need to worry about that. We suggest embracing your bump – figure hugging styles are very flattering, so don’t just keep buying bigger and bigger non-maternity clothes. Look for maternitywear in supportive fabric, wrap styles, or styles with ruching. We use many of those in the Isabella Oliver line to build both comfort and confidence.

2. I need help with just everything. From workwear to weekend. I’m completely lost and overwhelmed. I work in the fashion industry so I feel particularly pressured to remain stylish as my body changes.

Start by creating a capsule wardrobe that doesn’t feel too far removed from your normal style and then go from there. I’d suggest a boyfriend jean, a classic tee, a blazer, a T-shirt dress, a shirt and a comfy pair of joggers then mix and match for a multitude of occasions. Use accessories to style up or down for even more versatility.

3. I have a wedding to go to when I am 32 weeks pregnant so will be quite big by then. What shall I wear?

I’d recommend our Zahara Silk Maternity Maxi Dress, currently discounted to $132. It’s a beautiful and luxurious choice for a wedding and benefits from a flowing cut and light fabric. Plus, its length means you can even wear a flat sandal if you can’t bear the thought of a heel or a wedge for more than a couple of hours. From a styling point of view, the print is super pretty and appropriate for both the formality and fun of the event. Add a chunky necklace and a clutch to finish the look.

Are these questions similar to what you’re going through, as well? If so, what are you waiting for? Book your free Isabella Oliver eStylist appointment today!

Debbie Matenopoulos: “I Am So Excited About The Baby”

Thursday, May 15th, 2014

The View alum Debbie Matenopoulos is “excited about every aspect” of impending motherhood. Expecting her first child later this year, the mom-to-be, 39, says she hopes for a natural birth and is reading What to Expect When Expecting to help her prepare for the baby.

Debbie also opens up about her regular role on Home & Family and her new book, It’s All Greek to Me, which she calls her “first born baby.” She goes on to talk about losing her father to ALS, meeting her husband during the grieving process, and keeping in touch with Meredith Vieira from The View.

CBS: Congratulations on your pregnancy! How are you feeling?

DM: “I am so excited about the baby. I feel so fortunate that the universe has blessed us with this unexpected surprise. I am feeling great…now. However, for the first 3 1/2 months, I wasn’t feeling so hot. I was really tired and nauseous all day. It should be called ‘all day sickness’ instead of ‘morning sickness.’ ”

CBS: Congratulations also on your marriage! Tell us how you met your husband and a little bit about your love story.

DM: “Thank you! I met my hubby through friends a little over 2 years ago. I was going through a very tough time in my life and was definitely not looking for love. I had just lost my father to a horribly debilitating disease, ALS, and had not been out with friends in 5 months. My girlfriends dragged me to a Labor Day party and that’s where we met.

Although I thought he was incredibly charming and handsome, I was still mourning the loss of my father and I wasn’t emotionally or mentally available. After hanging out with him for about 2 hours at the party, I excused myself to the ladies room and then slipped out without saying goodbye to anyone. He tried to track me down for two months and kept asking my friends for my number. And then finally one night I was at a mutual friend of ours restaurant and our friend called him and said, ‘If you wanna see her again, you better come now.’ He was there within 20 minutes and came right up to me and said, ‘This time you can’t leave.’ And we’ve been together ever since.”

CBS: Do you have a birth plan? Are you hoping on a natural birth?

DM: “I don’t have a birth plan. I am just getting used to the fact that I am pregnant [laughs]. I would ideally like to give birth naturally, but I know things don’t always work out that way. I do know I will do my best to have a natural birth. My biggest hope for the birth is that the baby is healthy. Everything else is secondary.”

CBS: Are you excited about motherhood? Have you always wanted kids? How are you preparing for the baby? Reading all the books?

DM: “I am excited about every aspect of motherhood. It’s all new to me and I’m really looking forward to it. I am focusing on having this baby first and who knows what the future holds, but god willing, I’d like to give this baby a sibling at some point as well.

As far as preparing for motherhood, I have been taking lots of advice from my friends who are already mothers and I have been reading, What to Expect When Expecting. It’s the greatest book ever — so helpful. I have always wanted children and I feel like right now is the perfect time.”

CBS: We’ve been fans of yours since you appeared on the original cast of The View. Tell us how life has changed since then. Did that job change everything for you? Do you still keep in touch with those original co-hosts?

DM: “Thanks for being my longtime fans! That means a lot. My life has changed so much since those days. I was only 21-years-old. The experience of being on The View was the most defining moment in my television career. I owe all of my successes to Barbara Walters.

Although looking back, I was probably too young to have much of a ‘view’ about the world at that time, it was an amazing experience and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. I am better suited for The View at this point in my life than I was back then because I now have a well of experience to draw from.

I do still keep in touch with Meredith [Vieira] and always love to see all of the ladies whenever we happen to be in the same place. They are all really great women.”

CBS: You often appear on Home & Family. Tell us more about that show and your recurring role. Please also tell us about your book, It’s All Greek to Me. Do you look to cook? Tell us about the recipes and inspiration behind the book.

DM: “I am currently one of the cast members on Home & Family on The Hallmark Channel. I cover everything fashion, and I also do makeovers every Monday on deserving women and men that often have very compelling stories — sometimes heart warming, sometimes heart wrenching. I really love my job. We have such a great time on set. We are truly like a real family.

It’s All Greek to Me is my first-born baby [laughs]. It is my first cookbook that was just released on April 28. I worked harder on this project than I have on anything else in my career and I am very proud of it.

I initially set out to write this book because I love to cook and often have dinner parties and cook everything from scratch myself. All the recipes, however, are my families’ century old recipes and I wanted to share them with the world. They are not only delicious, but they are also incredibly healthy for you.

I truly believe that we humans were intended to eat a traditional Mediterranean diet rich in whole foods from our earth. But I also believe that we don’t have to deprive ourselves to be healthy. The recipes in this book are absolutely delicious, satiating and incredibly good for you. This book started as a cookbook, but throughout the process, turned into so much more than that. It became my love letter to Greece, where we traveled to make the book and where we shot the whole thing. I really, really loved this experience.”

CBS: Besides motherhood, do you have any special upcoming projects?

DM: “I hope to continue writing and creating cookbooks and building a following in the food space for years to come. It seems like a natural progression as I begin the nesting phase of my life. I want to begin to create things that my children will be proud of someday, and that will allow me to spend as much time as I can with my family. To me, family is the most important thing in life.”

Home & Family airs weekdays at 10 am on Hallmark Channel.

Have a Movie Marathon with These Films About Pregnancy

Monday, May 12th, 2014

It’s no secret that pregnancy (like most things) is nothing like the movies. But if your due date’s approaching and you’re looking to commiserate, cue up these films.

The Back-up Plan (2010): The story of a sperm donation and unexpected love intertwine in this rom-com starring Jennifer Lopez.

Father of the Bride, Part II (1995): You probably watched this classic while growing up, but nothing can beat a good Steve Martin movie, especially one featuring the hilarious wedding planner (turned baby shower organizer!) Franck. Plus, how many people do you know who were pregnant at the same time as their mother?!

Friends with Kids (2011): As you’d have guessed from its title, this modern take on parenting follows the story of two pals who decide to procreate. Fans of SNL and Bridesmaids will be happy to see that Maya Rudolph plays a supporting role. This is a film your hubs will enjoy, too (can you say Megan Fox?).

Knocked Up (2007): Katherine Heigl’s pregnancy gets a little up close and personal, but if you’re a fan of This is 40, you’ll enjoy watching what some consider its semi-prequel. Heads up: It’s a bit raunchy!

The Switch (2010): This funny film with a similar plotline to The Back-Up Plan features our other favorite Jennifer (Aniston) and chronicles the story of sperm donating gone wrong–or ultimately, right!

What to Expect When You’re Expecting (2012): This movie tells the story of series of couples all expecting at the same time–think, He’s Just Not That Into You, but about pregnancy. Oh, and they all happen to be played by actors and actresses you know and love: Cameron Diaz, JLo, Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick, Chace Crawford, and so on.

What to Take for Pregnancy Pains

Wednesday, May 7th, 2014

* By Sarah Lyon and Jessica Hartshorn

We hear from pregnant moms that when they walk into a drugstore, they’re not sure what’s safe and what’s not.

Obviously the number-one rule is to call your obstetrician’s office and get their okay before taking anything, even your regular pain medication. They’re going to know the latest recommendations, and be more reliable than any website. (Even ours!)

Another tip is to look for brands that cater specifically to pregnant women. Healthy Mama, for instance, is a line of seven FDA-approved products that address ailments including heartburn, aches and pains, and constipation, all deemed A-OK for pregnant and nursing women. “We put all the safest remedies under one brand umbrella, and they’re the safest solutions with the right formulations and dosages,” Healthy Mama founder Rachel Katz-Gallat said. Their most popular product is the “Boost-It-Up” caffeine-free energy drink (Olivia Wilde is a fan!), which also works to reduce morning sickness.

Earth Mama Angel Baby is mainly a line of pregnancy and postpartum skincare, but they also have teas for nausea and heartburn, and lots of advice on herbal remedies for problems such as swollen feet or a painful bottom (carrying a baby puts a lot of extra pressure there!).

In order to find some of these pregnancy-specific brands, you may want to look at a Whole Foods store or a Vitamin Shoppe, someplace where there are trained salespeople who can guide you. A salesperson can’t take the place of your doctor, but can give you suggestions that you can go back to your doctor and ask about. Their lines tend to be more natural, and also more focused; we found an entire “Mother & Children’s Health” section at a Vitamin Shoppe, which is not something you’re likely to find in your typical broad drugstore.

That said, if your local drugstore is all you have the time and energy for, the pharmacist on duty can be a good source of information as well. Feel better soon!
