Celebrate Father’s Day with a Free Playlist for Dad!

Tuesday, June 10th, 2014

Dad’s big day is almost here–it’s June 15, to be exact! To celebrate, cue up this exclusive playlist featuring positive songs about love and families.

Artists include Raffi–the children’s artist’s latest jam, “Love Bug,” is the title track of his new album–along with performers The Not-Its! (“Love is Love”), Brady Rymer (“Light is Love”), Suzi Shelton (“Ten Thousand Kisses”), Lucky Diaz (“When I Grow Up”), The Pop Ups (“Feelings Change”), Sugar Free Allstars (“My Daddy’s Record Collection”) and Eric Herman (“The Elephant Song”). Download the songs for free from June 13-18, or just stream the playlist here:

The songs have sweet lyrics that will make you smile (“Daddy loves you little one,” sings Suzi Shelton in “10,000 kisses”–she co-wrote the track with her husband, Dave Mitri!) and reflect ( “Families are never quite alike”/”Yours may not be just like mine,” sing The Not-Its! in”Love is Love”).

Need a gift idea for Dad? Lollypapas are a cute, clever, (oh, and edible!) treat you and your kids can make together.

Jam to New Indie Tunes, Out Free for Mother’s Day

Friday, May 9th, 2014

If the only song you associate with Mother’s Day is “Mamma Mia,” it’s time to expand your horizons with a playlist featuring some less mainstream tunes.

From now until May 16, you can download eight songs from independent artists when using your desktop or laptop device–and the tunes are free. Moms familiar with the Legally Blonde soundtrack will enjoy hearing Lisa Loeb’s “No Fairy Tale” (her song “We Could Still Belong Together” was featured in the movie!).

Other songs include: “Our Love Fits” (Danny Weinkauf with Laurie Berkner), “Tu Eres Amor” (Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band), “Smile in My Heart” and “Mama’s House, Daddy’s House” (Suzi Shelton), “Ice Cream Girl,” (Brady Rymer), “Mockingbird,” (Zee Avi), and “Black Bear Mama” (The Okee Dokee Brothers).

While you’re listening, read about the ways in which music lessons can benefit your child. Who knows, maybe one day you’ll be listening to your own son or daughter rock out! And if you’re going to be delivering anytime soon, learn about the ways in which music can help you during labor.

Must-Have Playlist

Friday, February 6th, 2009

No doubt about it: The key to my exercise success lately has been having an amazing playlist on my ipod. Of course, this workout strategy isn’t news to many of you, but it's taken me a while to get my music act together. On every holiday for the last two years (Mother’s Day, my birthday, Christmas), my husband and teenage daughter, Abby, have asked me what I wanted for a gift, and I’d always say, “Make me an exercise playlist.” Each time, Abby would respond, “I don’t know what kind of music you like—James Taylor?” They’d already gotten me a little ipod, but I’d never really had time to focus on it. Somehow, juggling the demands of work and motherhood had slowly led me to abandon my own personal music life.
So when I committed myself to get back in shape recently, I decided I had to take matters in my own hands. I spent three hours online one night looking at other playlists and listening to clips at itunes. The result was a 48-song list that gives me energy to exercise when I feel like I have none. Some are new songs, some remind me of high school or college. Part of the fun is the surprise of not knowing what’s coming up next. And believe me, there are songs on there that I would never play out loud in my own home—but hearing them through headphones feels like my own private party. Here are some of my favorites (don’t tell my daughter, and hope I spelled everyone's name right):

    Single Ladies – Beyonce
Pump It   &   Don’t Phunk With My Heart – Black Eyed Peas
Stacy’s Mom – Fountains of Wayne
    SexyBack – Justin Timberlake
    I Kissed A Girl – Katy Perry
Suddenly I See – KT Turnstall
    Hey Ya! – OutKast
Don’t Stop The Music   &   SOS – Rihanna
    Push It – Salt-N-Peppa
Get Ur Freak On – Missy Elliott

What songs get you motivated?
