It’s in the Cards

Monday, June 30th, 2008

We see a lot of mom calling cards here at GoodyBlog/Parents HQ, but when these lovely ones from Mommy Cards popped up in my inbox, I had to take a closer look. They’re awfully cute and super-chic—a perfect combo. And wouldn’t it feel nice to whip out one of these babies next time you’re on a playdate instead of scribbling your number on a napkin?

Calling All Working Moms!

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

For an upcoming story, we’d like to compile a collection of tips from moms about how to make life easier and less stressful when you work outside the home. We’re looking for tips along the lines of: how to make the most of your lunch hour/workday, the ways you manage to fit in volunteering at your child’s school, smart multitasking strategies, things you get your spouse/friends to do for you, and ways to stop feeling guilty. Tell us in the comments section and your quote could appear in a future issue of Parents. Thanks for your help!

Good Deed Friday: Shop for School Supplies

Friday, June 6th, 2008

School is just about to end for the summer, but those of you who love getting fun supplies to use year-round will love the Kendall Kollection from designer Jacqueline Savage McFee. Her designs are fun and colorful for little kids, but still with a sleek and modern element that moms will love. Plus, the good deed factor is that a portion of the proceeds from the Kendall Kollection go to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, a foundation that’s near and dear to McFee’s heart. The inspiration for the line came from McFee’s 4-year-old cousin, Kendall Sierens, who was diagnosed with leukemia—she’s still battling the disease today. You can check McFee’s website to find out where to buy the pens, pencils, stick-on notes, notebooks, planners, and more, and to stay updated on Kendall’s progress.

Organization Inspiration

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

Img25lI haven’t done any spring cleaning yet (I always find something more fun to do instead…imagine that!). But I’m getting inspired thanks to Pottery Barn Teen, of all places. They’ve got some surprisingly sophisticated and pretty organization tools, like these sunburst canvas bins. I’m loving their dry-erase bins too. They’d be perfect for helping little kids learn to clean up: It’ll be easier for them to figure out where their things belong if you draw a picture of whatever type of toy is stored inside.

Plug of the Week: Home Improvment Made Easy

Monday, May 5th, 2008

House_always_winsWhen Marni Jameson isn’t writing for Parents, she’s dishing out very practical and funny home-decorating advice in her syndicated column “At Home with Marni Jameson." Her new book, The House Always Wins, is about how you can create your dream home—but a real-world, budget-friendly dream home that actually works for a family, not a spartan, spotless showroom. And the book isn’t all how-tos: Marni has two daughters, one of whom wants gorillas and elephants painted on her bedroom walls and a “furry phone,” so she’s also got great tips on finding a sane compromise when your kids make crazy decor requests. You can order a copy here or enter to win one by sending her your most horrific remodeling tale.

Genius (and Green) Laundry Detergent

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

I just finished my first bag of Dropps laundry detergent, and I’m officially sold on this product. Dropps are pre-filled packets of  detergent that you can just pop in your washer when it’s time to do laundry. This has two really great benefits: 1. Less environmental waste because there’s no giant plastic bottle to throw away, and the pre-filled packets dissolve in the wash. 2. I don’t have to carry a giant plastic bottle to my laundry room (living in NYC, this is a huge plus) or find space in my apartment to store said giant bottle. Nor do I have to measure out the detergent—inevitably getting it all over my hands and clothes and smelling like cleaning supplies for the rest of the day. So yay to Dropps for making a product that makes my life easier and the environment healthier! ($24.99 for 60 loads worth of detergent)
