Happy 8th birthday to Destination Maternity’s flagship store, in New York City. It’s the largest maternity apparel store in the world, and incidentally, a great resource for us at American Baby and Parents since our offices are not many blocks away!
Destination Maternity houses both Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod under one roof. Motherhood, the less pricey of the two, is the only maternity source to win a place in our coveted American Baby Bests Award stories. (The poll for Best Maternity Clothes for 2014 doesn’t go up until April, but please vote for your favorite baby gear in the meantime! And enter to win $300!)
Destination Maternity operates hundreds of stores, so we’re betting there’s one near you, and there’s always the online site. Five top reasons to check in with them during your pregnancy:
1. Their sales associates are experts in all things maternity and nursing. That’s why I brought my sis-in-law to the store a year ago. She spelled out her very specific needs (conservative work dresses for a petite, curvy gal) and an employee became our personal shopper. PS It helped that we went first-thing on a weekday; that’s when you get the place more or less to yourself!
2. Preggos are nuts for the line’s Secret Fit Belly jeans. Even my sis-in-law, who went in saying she wasn’t going to bother with pants. She tried them on, and you could see the “ah-ha!” moment in her eyes. We’ve seen the same thing with models at American Baby photo shoots: Women who are trying to wear their old pants, unbuttoned, put on the Secret-Fit ones, and it’s like they’ve been liberated.
3. We know plenty of women need a special-occasion dress during their pregnancy–a baby-shower outfit if nothing else. There are a ton of dresses from Motherhood Maternity and A Pea in the Pod. Listen, I know there are also maternity-rental sites where you can “borrow” dressy clothes. But I still remember my pregnancies too clearly to totally get on board with renting. I was sweaty, I was clumsy, my sizing was weird…I needed to own my clothes, even the dressy ones. And for heaven’s sake, there are plenty of Motherhood dresses in the $40 range!
4. Like some other big chains we know and love, they have designer collaborations that now include Jessica Simpson Maternity and The Honest Company and, coming soon in March, L by Jennifer Love Hewitt. A Pea in the Pod also carries a bunch of designer brands including 7 for all Mankind, Rebecca Taylor, and Nanette Lepore.
5. Select locations have an Edamame Maternity Spa. And I can promise from personal experience that you don’t have to be pregnant to take advantage of the menu of services. So take your not-pregnancy friend with you!
And while we’re on the subject of looking and feeling great during pregnancy, get the lowdown on dying your hair and polishing your nails while you’re expecting by watching this!

Warmth, comfort, and style are the keys to feeling and looking great during the colder months, especially during your last trimester.
Opt for a demure long-sleeve LBD for a winter baby shower like the Nicole Miller Long Sleeve Ruched Maternity Dress. For a more casual but polished look, try the Rebecca Taylor Long Sleeve Lace Maternity Shirt paired with skinny jeans or leather leggings. Add our Open Front Ponte Maternity Jacket and a statement necklace to complete your look.
The ultimate in comfort, our patented Secret Fit Belly® is a stretchy seamless panel available on your favorite bottoms from leggings to designer denim. The panel provides excellent support and can even be worn post-pregnancy as your body transitions. Plus you’ll still be able to wear your favorite designer styles from skinny to boyfriend jeans.
Layering is essential during the last few months of your pregnancy. Our seamless, adjustable strap and shelf-bra camis are great to pair underneath fitted blazers. A T-shirt, tank, or long-sleeved shirt with flattering side-ruching is perfect to wear underneath a cardigan or to layer with a sweater. They smooth out your look and add a layer of warmth.
Winter weekends are for lounging! Relax in style with our cozy Splendid® Long Sleeve Maternity Hoodie. Pair this hoodie with our super-soft French Terry Drawstring Maternity Lounge Pants; they adjust to accommodate your growing baby bump and are comfortable to wear even after baby arrives.
Winter months can be especially harsh on your skin. Basq Skincare’s Citrus Sugar Body Polish gently exfoliates and helps to brighten dull, tired skin. Basq also makes some fantastic body oils that are perfect for maintaining your glow; they moisturize, strengthen and tone your skin and have a soothing fragrance.
Is it mostly clothes for your workplace that you need? Check out this Parents video for a few more tips!

To the pregnant woman, there’s one aspect of this season that triggers anxiety: shopping for dressy maternity clothes. From mid-November until January, women must step up their style to express the celebratory verve of the holidays. But with a watermelon in the belly, dressing for the parade of parties can be stressful.
Here’s the deal: you don’t need to invest in an entirely new wardrobe to create festive and flattering outfits. The secret is having key maternity basics (namely a great dress or tunic) that can be layered into holiday-worthy ensembles. Dramatic accessories are the difference between ho-hum and high wattage. By pairing a flattering silhouette with glammy statement jewelry, fashionable footwear and a great bag, you can pack away your holiday-dressing jitters. Here are four standout looks based on maternity fashion finds from our Parents.com shop.
ON THE EDGE
This starts with one of the ASOS Maternity Swing Dresses on our site for between $26 and $80. Forever 21 accessories kick it up, including Sleek Long Fringe Earrings ($5.80) and a Paneled Clutch ($19.80). The stack of bracelets might be something you already own, or you can consider these from Baublebar for $52. Pull on booties instead of heels for the added edge. These Nine West Junia Booties are $139.
Here we begin with our store’s ASOS Maternity Midi Tulip Dress with Wrap Front for $62. It gets an instant cool factor with the DKNY Jeans Chunky ZigZag Long Cardigan, a splurge at $91 but something you’ll use all winter and, because it’s not maternity, you can wear forever. The chain bracelet is $7.80 at Forever 21 and the Merona Satchel is $35 at Target. Add your own jewelry and booties or try this necklace is One by Dallas + Carlos for $98 and the Marana booties from DV by Dolce Vita for $129.
POISED & POLISHED
This cheery look starts at our shop with A Pea in the Pod’s ¾ Sleeve Drape Front Maternity Dress for $60. Add a gold skinny belt like this $10 number from BDG. The $50 H&M Boucle Jacket, which isn’t maternity and will serve you after pregnancy, too, looks professional and gives you coverage if you’re self-concious about your shape. Add your own gold hoops (these are $25 Sequin NYC Studded Hoops from Nordsrom) and wedge pumps (these are $80 Calvin Klein pumps from DSW). The $144 Heather Belle & Co. wristlet is cool; Vegan Leather!
If you’re more comfy in pants, grab a dressy tunic like our shop’s Jessica Simpson for Destination Maternity Long Sleeve Lace Trim Maternity Tunic for $59 and put them over the AG Jeans Secret Belly Fit Corduroy Pants for $210 (worth it because you’ll wear those suckers twice a week for all nine months, trust us!). Forever 21 has the Rock & Roll Faux Leather Clutch for $21.80, and H&M has the $6 20 Pack of Bracelets and $8 ring. A scarf gives added color; it doesn’t have to be fancy but we do love this Yarnz Geo Eye Scarf for $145. Enzo Angiolini’s Zeric Riding Boots finish things off at $100.

When caring for Baby, you barely have time to think about yourself let alone what you’re wearing, including the essentials like nursing bras. But for mamas experiencing financial and family hardships, stylish duds could just be the perfect spark of hope.
That’s a message the uber-cool clothing line Thyme Maternity understands all too well. To celebrate the opening of its first in-store shop in New York this week, the brand is teaming with Baby Buggy, a non-profit providing struggling moms across the country with essential gear and services.
We caught up with Baby Buggy’s founder Jessica Seinfeld, mom of three and wife of Jerry Seinfeld, to learn more about this exclusive partnership:
The event is themed “Look Great, Feel Great.” Why is that such an important message for you?
The moms we help are struggling with the very basics, so they don’t feel great about themselves every morning they wake up. They face things most of us could never comprehend. For us to give back through Thyme Maternity is almost life changing because it gives them a little bit of light in a dark time.
How have the families you’ve helped responded to the partnership?
One of our moms is so happy she actually has something nice to wear to work for the first time. Every dollar she stashed away went to her family and not herself. To give a mother something special, especially during this time, is a wonderful thing.
What’s your favorite thing about Thyme’s new fall line?
They really took fall to a bright, not somber place. What I like about this line is that it’s flattering for all different shapes, and the colors are really pretty.
What helps you balance work with family?
I only know how to work. I’m not good with staying home, especially now that my kids are in school all day. I try to kill it every day and put in as much as I can to spend more time helping people.
The “Look Great, Feel Great” event runs throughout this weekend. For every item purchased through September 22 from the line’s maternity shops in Babies “R” Us as well as online at BabiesRUs.com/Thyme, Thyme will donate a piece from its collection to Baby Buggy. To top it off, all items will be Buy One, Get One 50 percent off, a win for moms everywhere. For instance, you can pick up TWO of Thyme’s great nursing bras starting as low as $30! Happy shopping…

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.
It’s a Hollywood baby boom. And what better way to celebrate high-profile baby bumps than with funky fashions?!
From Kate Middleton’s pretty trends, to Kim Kardashian’s bold statements, to Jenna Dewan-Tatum’s feminine chic fashions, let’s take a look at the top maternity styles from 10 pregnant celebrities.
We’ve only caught a few glimpses of Kate Middleton‘s maternity style — but so far, we approve! After leaving the hospital in December, Kate looked chic in a navy coat accessorized with a light blue scarf while holding a bouquet of yellow roses. And last month, we caught our first glimpse of her barely there belly in a gray Max Mara wrap dress. All eyes will be on the Duchess of Cambridge, 31, in the following months as her baby bump continues to grow.
From Hollywood glam, to skinny jeans and scarves, to feminine floral dresses, Kristen Bell has dressed to impress during her first pregnancy. At the Golden Globe Awards in January, the House of Lies star, 32, radiated the red carpet in an embellished floor-length Jenny Packham gown.
Mom-to-be Holly Madison has been hitting the Las Vegas circuit over the past few months. Embracing her growing belly in form fitting dresses, the Playboy model, 33, has been rocking her baby bump on the red carpet.
From rocker chic, to maxi dresses and scarves, to red carpet radiant, Malin Akerman has been leading the way in top maternity trends this season. In November, the Rock of Ages actress, 32, wowed in an all-black ensemble while showcasing her barely there baby bump. As her belly has grown, she has embraced the curves with tight dresses and tops. Such a stunning mom-to-be!
Black Eyed Peas frontwoman Fergie announced her pregnancy news last month. And since then, all eyes have been on the singer-fashion designer, 37, as she dresses her lovely baby bump. From all black chic, to layers and scarves, to flowing and feminine, the Grammy Award-winning singer is mixing up the maternity trends during her first pregnancy.
She’s received quite a lot of buzz about her maternity style so far! But what else would you expect from the 32-year-old reality star? She wowed in white on the red carpet, she raised eyebrows in high-waisted peplum pants, and she even wore a see-through blouse. We can’t wait to see how the mom-to-be continues to dress her growing baby bump.
Mom-to-be Jenna Dewan-Tatum has been dressing her growing belly in maxi dresses, skinny jeans and layers, and glam red carpet gowns. Always adding the perfect denim jacket or accessory, the Step Up star, 32, has been dressing to impress during her first pregnancy.
During her second pregnancy, Jessica Simpson has looked radiant in black fitted outfits, partnered with chic jackets. From a pretty pink blazer, to modern military jackets, the singer-turned-fashion-designer, 32, is keeping things trendy as her baby bump grows.
Cougar Town star Busy Philipps has been looking chic in patterned maternity maxi dresses with flats and fitted red carpet gowns during her second pregnancy. Admitting this pregnancy has been “harder” than her first, the actress, 33, is opting for trendy yet comfortable maternity fashions this time around.
Although she welcomed her first child “The Dash” last month, we’d be remiss not to mention the maternity fashions of Amber Rose. The model mom, 29, embraced her growing baby bump throughout her first pregnancy with form fitting dresses, polka dots, and caps.
Who has the best – and worst – maternity style?

Babies don’t go back to school, but that doesn’t mean your tiny person couldn’t use some new fall clothes. Since I’m clothes-shopping for my biggies this month, I have the itch to blog about brands I’ve loved since they were small, starting with Mini Boden. It’s a Web site and a catalog out of England, run by Johnnie Boden, a dad.
Their stuff isn’t the cheapest, but it is very well-made. I’d compare it to Gap quality. It’s got a British design flair, with a lot of sweet plaids, darling appliques, and pretty trims. A pack of five different, thick, long-sleeved bodysuits like the ones shown here is $46. If you sign up for their emails, you’ll get a free-shipping offer what seems like every few weeks, which saves you a $10 charge.
PS although it’s much more fun to buy baby clothes, you should know that Boden also makes maternity clothes. We use their $34 leggings in a lot of our maternity fashion shoots. They’re soft and silky and I’m not too ashamed to say that maybe, just maybe, some of us wear them when we aren’t pregnant too.
Whether you need baby clothes, maternity clothes, big-kid clothes or something for your guy, I think you’d be happy with anything from Boden. To make it easier, I’ve begged the Boden folks to give one fortunate poster a $100 giftcard. (You’re welcome!) Leave a comment, up to one a day, anytime from now until the end of the day on Wednesday, August 15th. We’ll randomly pick one post for the $100 giftcard. You can read the full rules here. Goody luck!
