Jewel: “I Like What Engaging in Creativity Does For a Person”

Wednesday, February 26th, 2014

As a singer-songwriter, Jewel is a big fan of stretching those creative muscles and loves to encourage her 2-year-old son, Kase, through music and crafts. It’s no wonder that she was eager to teach kids the Clean Up song at last week’s Swiffer Sweep & Trap event in New York City. Parents chatted with the mommy maestro about getting messy, impromptu songwriting, and raising her toddler.

P: What is your favorite messy activity to do with Kase?

J: We’re just getting into crafts. Valentine’s Day was the first time that we really started crafting. The glitter sticks and the glitter went everywhere. But it’s nice. I want him to feel like he can make a mess and not be the kind of mom that’s saying “no no no no no.” You know? Let him get dirty and I’ll bring a change of clothes.

P: Is he a helper when you clean up?

J: I’m trying to teach him that whenever we play, part of playing is also cleaning up. It’s not to be perfect, it’s just engaging in the process and building a habit and building an expectation of a habit. I won’t nitpick. That just takes all the joy out of cleaning, if that makes any sense. I just want it to be part of the ritual. I make it fun; I sing a song and we move on.

"Clean-Up" With Singer Jewel!

P: It sounds like Kase is into music already. How do you hope to foster that love for music in him?

You know I don’t care if he ever becomes a musician or a songwriter or not, but I like what engaging in creativity does for a person’s development and for their confidence. We do little things. If we go hiking I carry him on my back in a little backpack and I’ll go, “Make up a song about what you’re seeing.” And he’ll go [singing] “Trees….Rocks….Bird poop.” I love it!

P: Your upbringing was quite unconventional. How does that influence how you raise Kase?

J: It makes me think a lot about being spoiled. I think that for me struggling, learning I had to do things on my own, having responsibilities, understanding what responsibilities were—that are age appropriate—was really good. I think it robs your child of confidence when you don’t let them struggle and learn how to do something on their own. It’s hard as a parent to resist fixing that little thing for them or helping them solve that puzzle. You have this weird urge to “Oh that goes right here,” and I constantly remind myself to not intervene, and let him struggle, and let him figure it out.

In honor of Father’s Day this Sunday, we’re taking a look at some of Hollywood’s leading men from father-of-two Freddie Prinze, Jr., to new dads Nick Lachey and Bill Rancic, to dad-of-one Richie Sambora, and father-of-five Chris O’Donnell.

We’re highlighting 16 proud papas who share their upcoming Father’s Day plans, the joys of fatherhood, and their cherished family memories.

Richie Sambora:

Rockstar papa Richie Sambora, 53, and his ex-wife, actress Heather Locklear, are parents to 15-year-old daughter Ava.

The Bon Jovi rocker opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about the joys of fatherhood and his plans on Father’s Day.

“I’m very lucky because to me, every day that I spend with my daughter is Father’s Day,” the proud papa gushed. “She is my diamond. No matter what happens there is a joyful energy around us. My favorite thing in the world is her.”

He went on to talk about his late father, whom he continues to cherish.

“I celebrate by thinking about my dad and all the gifts he’s given to me,” he shared. “He was non-judgmental, good natured and had good humor and morality. I also celebrate by going out on a daddy-daughter date.”

What has fatherhood taught the award-winning guitarist?

“A lot of things to mention here but, I guess truly, how to love unconditionally,” Richie said. “I’ve learned to take responsibility, be flexible, and have respect for my parents for what they’ve given me.”

Tamera Mowry-Housley & husband Adam Housley:

What makes her hubby such a great dad? “Aww, that’s such a great question!” Tia gushed. “No one has ever asked me that.”

“What makes my husband a good dad is that he’s very aware,” she added. “Let’s say I’m exhausted from working all day. He’ll see that and say, ‘You know what, Tia? I’ll go ahead and take care of Cree and give him a bottle when he wakes up in the middle of the night. Why don’t you go to the other room and get a few extra hours of sleep?’ He’ll also say, ‘Alright Tia, go take a nap. I’m going to take Cree to the park.’”

She added: “I think ‘considerate’ is the best word to describe my hubby. That’s what makes him a good dad. He’s aware and he also takes the time to play with Cree. He’s very proactive, which I think is awesome.”

The Scent of a Woman star, 42, told us what Father’s Day means to him.

“It means spending time with my family,” he said. “I also plan to play golf without a trace of guilt. Some of my most memorable gifts from my kids have been homemade cards – my kids putting their feelings into words.”

Melissa Rycroft & Tye Strickland:

Reality star Melissa Rycroft and husband Tye Strickland are parents to 2-year-old daughter Ava.

The Bachelor alum, 30, boasted about her “hands on” hubby.

“Oh my gosh, I lucked out on the daddy department,” she gushed. “I have to say, the fact that he’s hands on, that he wants to be involved, that he enjoys daddy daughter time, is just such a blessing. I know that I’m very, very lucky. Just seeing him with her and seeing how she responds to him, it definitely makes you fall in love a little bit more.”

Amy Grant & Vince Gill:

“He is good at lightening the mood. He enjoys teasing, and I think that’s a good thing,” she shared.

“I’ll tell you what makes him a good stepfather,” Amy continued. “He has three stepchildren and he gave them all their space and didn’t pretend like he was their choice. He was their mommy’s choice, and slowly over the years they grew to love him.”

Party of Five alum Scott Wolf is dad to sons Jackson, 4, and 6-month-old Miller.

The Everwood star, 45, spoke about fatherhood, the favorite role of his life.

Nick Lachey:

Nick Lachey, 39, and wife Vanessa Lachey, 32, welcomed their first child, son Camden, on September 12.

“It has changed me for sure. It literally affects everything you do, every decision you make,” Nick said. “Your priorities completely shift and your kids instantly become the most important thing in the world. I think it’s made me a more patient person as well.

“My greatest joy is waking him up every day,” he added. “Seeing that little boy look up and smile at me every morning is the perfect way to start my day. The biggest challenge is having enough time in the day to do everything I need to do.”

Perez Hilton:

Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton became a dad earlier this year when he welcomed his son Mario Armando Lavandeira, IIIor Perez Hilton Jr., on February 16.

She added: “Since we’re spending Mother’s Day in LA, I’d love to plan an exciting weekend in Chicago – Bill’s hometown – with both of my boys. Depending on the weather, I’d love to start off with a run with Bill and Duke in the jogger along the lakefront. It would be really nice to walk to the zoo, some museums, and then top the night off with dinner at RPM Italian.”

Jewel & Ty Murray:

Singer-songwriter Jewel and husband, rodeo cowboy Ty Murray, are parents to nearly 2-year-old son Kase.

The Grammy Award-winning singer happily shared this about her “dedicated” and “hands on” husband.

“My husband’s a very dedicated dad,” she gushed. “He doesn’t want to work or do anything but stay at home and help with the baby. He’s a very hands on dad, which is a great thing about him.”

Andrew Zimmern:

Celebrity chef Andrew Zimmern is proud dad to 8-year-old son Noah.

The television personality, 51, talked about how fatherhood has changed him.

“It has increased my patience by a factor of about fifteen, and it has also made me increasingly aware of the problems I have with my own selfishness,” Andrew shared. “When I am just thinking about me, I am not being very useful to my son or my wife. Having a child is a supreme motivator in that regard.”

Singer Jewel on Motherhood and Learning “The Balancing Act”

Thursday, April 25th, 2013

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

Singer and songwriter Jewel has been one busy mama! She recently performed during the Academy of Country Music Awards’ Lifting Lives Moment to benefit ConAgra Foods’ Child Hunger Ends Here Campaign. She is also set to play June Carter Cash in the Lifetime Original Movie Ring of Fire, coming out this May.

Jewel opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her son, Kase, 20-months, who went on his first “road tour,” her involvement with ConAgra and the cause to end child hunger, finding a balance between being a mom and having a creative outlet, and her Mother’s Day plans.

Celebrity Baby Scoop: Tell us about your partnership with ACM Lifting Lives. How did you get involved with the organization?

Jewel: “I was the spokesperson for ConAgra Foods last year. ConAgra’s initiative is to bring awareness to end child hunger, and they did this by partnering with the ACM. They have songwriters and artists write songs in different formats, such as a country song or a pop song, which are then used in the commercials. Last year, I sang a song for the campaign and Little Big Town performed it for the ACM Lifting Lives moment. This year, another girl wrote the song and I performed at the ACM Awards.”

CBS: How did you prepare for your performance at the Academy of Country Music Awards?

J: “I performed a medley of my song Hands and this other song. I’ve prepared in all sorts of ways. I had to work on the medley, work out the keys, and practice on it to make sure I was ready to do it live.”

10 Celebrity Moms Breastfeeding Their Babies

Monday, October 8th, 2012

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

With new mom Beyoncé among the celebrity moms who have no qualms about breastfeeding in public, we’re taking a look at 10 high-profile mamas who love nursing their babies.

Proud breastfeeding mama Pink says “I don’t give a sh*t what somebody else thinks” when it comes to nursing her 15-month-old daughter Willow, while new mom Snooki says breast milk is “best” for newborn son Lorenzo. Read on for more from Hollywood’s nursing mamas.

1. Pink

Pink is a proud breastfeeding mama and she’s ready to stand her ground against anyone who criticizes her for doing so. During a recent radio interview, the Grammy Award-winning singer recounted an altercation at a restaurant she visited with her husband and their now 15-month-old daughter Willow.

“The first time we went out to a restaurant, there was a guy who walked by, I had a cover on and it’s called a Hooter Hider,” the Blow Me (One Last Kiss) singer said.

“I had a Hooter Hider on and this guy walks by and was like, ‘Uughhh.’ He was just disgusted. I was like, ‘You didn’t get enough hugs when you were little.’ Carrie said, ‘You are starting fights in restaurants?’ I said, ‘I will… I will fight, hold my baby.’”

“I think breastfeeding is healthy and natural and it’s a comfort to my baby, so I can give a sh*t what somebody else thinks,” Pink said.

2. Snooki

New mom Snooki has been sharing pic after pic of her sweet 5-week-old son Lorenzo. And it turns out the reality TV star has changed her tune about breastfeeding.

The Jersey Shore star, who is engaged to Lorenzo’s father Jionni LaValle, told one of her pregnant Twitter followers, “All the pain and anxiety is so worth it!!!”

The pint-sized reality starlet confessed in June that she was “scared” of breastfeeding because it “looks so painful.” She added, “It’s kind of like you’re a cow and you’re just milking.”

But the new mom has had a change of heart! “I love nursing my little man!” she recently said.

“He holds his bottle like a champ,” the Jersey Shore star, 24, posted via Instagram. Presumed to be pumped breast milk in Enzo’s bottle, Snooki tweeted about the benefits of breastfeeding.

When a fan asked, “Does breastfeeding really burn like a zillion calories?,” the reality TV starlet tweeted, “I’ve lost a lot of my baby weight! Also it’s the best for him!”

3. Miranda Kerr

Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr and her handsome hubby Orlando Bloom welcomed their first child, son Flynn, in January 2011.

Although the industry expects supermodels to regain their svelte figure immediately, Miranda said her first priority was breastfeeding her babe.

“I didn’t feel pressure to snap back into shape,” she said. “My priority was just having my son and breastfeeding, which was something I really wanted to do, and it came easily.”

And she extended breastfeeding, nursing Flynn past his first birthday.

“I intend to breastfeed for as long as I can,” she said. “My breast milk will give our little Flynn the nutrition he needs for his continued healthy development and to all mums out there I am sure you will make the right choice for you and your baby.”

Celebs’ Childhood Summertime Memories

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

With the warm months upon us, CelebrityBabyScoop asked some of our favorite celebrity moms to share their childhood summertime memories.

From Tori Spelling‘s family vacations in Las Vegas, to Jewel‘s horse riding adventures in Alaska, to Denise Richards’ family fun with their furry friends, read through our list of unforgettable family memories.

Jewel:

Soulful singer Jewel welcomed her first child, son Kase, in July 2011 with rodeo star hubby Ty Murray. The new mom opened up about her carefree childhood summertime memories in the great outdoors up in Alaska.

“They’re all outdoors,” she said. “I grew up in Alaska and the outdoors are so beautiful. I don’t think I spent any time inside except to sleep. My memories were horse riding and getting outside.”

Tori Spelling:

Actress-author Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott are parents to three children – son Liam, 5, and daughters Stella, 4, and Hattie, 8 months – with baby No. 4 on the way this September. The “Beverly Hills, 90210″ star opened up about her childhood summer vacations with her family, including her late father, acclaimed TV producer Aaron Spelling, mother Candy Spelling and brother Randy.

“Everyone always asks me if I flew all over the world as a child,” Tori said. “But the truth is, my dad was afraid to fly. So we drove to Vegas for a month every summer! And this was before Vegas was kid-friendly. I really have to hand it to my mom for always finding fun things for us to do in Vegas.”

Sarah Wayne Callies:

Actress Sarah Wayne Callies, spokesperson for the International Rescue Committee‘s Wake Up Campaign, is mom to 5-year-old daughter Keala. The “The Walking Dead” star opened up about her idyllic childhood growing up in Hawaii.

“I lived in Hawaii, so it would have to be the beach,” she said. “We had a fun tradition where we would try to watch the sun rise over the water and then drive to the other side of the island and watch the sun set. My hair was constantly a mess of salt, seaweed, and sand. Gosh, I loved summers and lived for them as a kid. My parents were professors at a university, so they had summers off too. We were constantly outside; I think we went inside just to sleep and to raid the fridge for food to take outside. We would do a lot of kayaking and other fun summer activities. I have a lot of memories of kayaking with my dad and seeing sea turtles all around. Just incredible.”

Nicole Sullivan:

Actress and Jenny Brand Ambassador Nicole Sullivan is mom to sons Dash, 5, and Beckett, 2 1/2 with husband, fellow actor Jason Packham. The ”MADtv” alum opened up about her childhood memories of camping in the summertime.

“Some of my favorite memories growing up are camping with my family and our dog,” Nicole said. “And I still love it!”

Laila Ali:

Former boxer Laila Ali and her husband, football star Curtis Conway, are parents to son C.J., nearly 4, and daughter Sydney, 13 months. The ”Dancing with the Stars” alum said that growing up in a divorced and blended family with boxing legend father, Muhammed Ali, provided endless hours of fun in the sun with her stepsisters.

“As a child, we didn’t go on summer vacations,” Laila shared. “I just remember that my stepsisters would come over and everyone would be there. It was great to have everyone come to the house to go swimming together and pile up in the car together. It was a lot of fun…summers were always family time.”
