Homebirths on the Rise

Friday, May 20th, 2011

Today new research from the National Center for Health Statistics reported a 20 percent rise in homebirths between 2004 and 2008.

There are a variety of factors for the increase. A major concern has been the rise of C-sections and alleged medical interventions. In addition, many families want to be surrounded by family and friends and cut costs. A homebirth costs about third of a hospital delivery, Marian MacDorman, a statistician and lead author of the report published in the journal Birth said. Even with the increase, homebirths still only account for 1 percent of births.

Although many moms may want a homebirth, it’s not for everyone. Woman with hypertension, gestational diabetes and other health concerns are advised to go to the hospital.
