Affordable, Original Art for Your Baby’s Bedroom

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

Just a month into my new gig at Parents, I’ve been staying late at the office most nights. And since I seem to have made myself at home in my cubicle, I thought it made sense to make my cubicle a little more, well, homey. The challenge? I don’t have much of a budget for office décor, but I can’t stomach the thought of putting up something mass-produced (no Starry Night poster, please!). So, I turned to my favorite source for affordable, original art: Etsy. While browsing for prints to brighten up my workspace, I happened upon this amazing, graphic Alphabet Pipeline poster. Intrigued, I decided to check out what other cool, kid-friendly designs might be out there. Turns out, when it comes nursery art, chic (and cheap!) options abound. I couldn’t keep my excitement to myself, so I rounded up a few of my favorite finds (from $14 a pop) for you to check out. From left to right: Birds in Tree, Monstropolis, I Like to Rock, Daryl No 78365, and Jungle Animals.

Christian the Lion (is it just me or is this mindblowing?)

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008

My kids have been away at camp for seven, SEVEN Empty What Do I Do With Myself weeks! I have been missing them so much that I’ve had to turn to animal videos to make up for the severe drop of cutest quotient in my life. Seriously. But they’re are coming home today!!! And so in honor of their impending arrival, I’m sharing my most favorite, most heart-warming of all the animal videos that have gotten me through my lonely summer.

Will my kids be as happy to see me as Christian? Will they remember me as vividly? Will someone cue up really corny music when they get out of the car? If you want to track our reunion in real time follow me on twitter. To read more about Christian’s amazing story read this.

Good Deed Friday: Save the Pandas

Friday, July 11th, 2008

Now that we’ve fallen in love with a slightly plump Kung Fu Panda this summer, why not introduce a new kind of panda to your kids? This one’s not a cartoon, and he’s desperate for our help. For $30, you can get a copy of Ultimate Pandas, a documentary that has some great kid features like Panda Guide soundtracks for younger kids and five original panda music videos by Juri Panda Jones with sing-along subtitles. Included in the package is a matching adorable plush. Half the proceeds of the kit will go to the earthquake relief efforts at the Wolong Nature Reserve, where the DVD was filmed. You can also support the cause by buying some panda-inspired art (like the one pictured in this post) that would look adorable in a baby nursery.

Polar Enthusiast

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Not that I wasn’t always smitten, but ever since polar bears were added to the “threatened species” list, I’ve been a little obsessed. They’ve become the latest wildlife celebrities for reasons good—they’re just so lovable—and not so good—they’re officially the first animals to make the list due to global warming.
As the new poster bears for climate crisis, they have inspired some supportive (not to mention cute and cuddly) stuff. One of these may even help you kick-start a wildlife conservation talk with your own cubs.

Tiny Revolutionary’s tee falls in line with the brand’s motto, “All change begins small.”

Sales of this little cub from Polar Bears International support conservation programs.

There’s never been a better time for a cool polar bear backpack from Dante Beatrix.

Organic cotton and lambswool bears from Branch have a removable insert you can warm up for extra-loveable hugs.

Prints Please: Cute Kids Clothes

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

Gb_image1_2I’m sucker for Scandinavian prints (can’t help but love Marimekko) so ittikid immediately caught my eye. The website is the brainchild of a Danish designer/mom who now lives in California and imports the clothing and accessories from Sweden and Denmark. Check out the Bib Feed Me! Viking (sadly, unavailable at the moment), the funny pilot caps, and the beautiful mobiles.
