A friend and I talk often about how Halloween has turned into the most fabulous holiday. It’s not loaded with the traditions and expectations of a religious holiday. No one expects you to cook, like you do on Thanksgiving, or travel, like people often do for the Fourth of July. You walk around in your own neighborhood, and eat a lot of candy! You have fun with your kids, and very rarely have to deal with coordinating visiting relatives.
Halloween gets really superb when you have a little munchkin to dress up. Whether you go to a party with your baby or walk in your town’s Halloween parade or just sit on your porch and hand out candy, it is SO much fun to have a Halloween sidekick.
My favorite costumes come from Chasing-Fireflies.com. Their catalog, Wishcraft, comes out in the summer and always gets my kids thinking about how they want to dress on October 31. (I think Grace is going for a fortune teller this year, and Joe changes his mind every other day.) We feel like we have to step things up in the costume department, because our neighborhood takes the Halloween-dress thing pretty seriously. You can see an amazing slideshow of kids in costumes from my part of Brooklyn; it might give you some good ideas! We decorate our house, too. Nothing fancy, but you can see Grace likes to cover the front with cobwebs.
Browse Chasing-Fireflies.com and you’ll see a lot of decorations, too. And here’s the giveaway news: Chasing Fireflies will give one person a $100 giftcard, which should help you afford outfits for two kids, or one outfit and some decorations, you get the idea. To be eligible, leave a comment (up to one a day) between now and the end of the day on Wednesday, September 19. Tell me what your child is likely to be for Halloween this year, and whether you prefer to buy or make a costume. We’ll pick one winner at random to get the $100 giftcard. You can read the official rules here. Goody luck!
