It’s shocking to know that 1 in 4 children (about 16 million) in America is living in poverty, which often leads to decreased literacy and increased drop out rates, violence and crime, and obesity.
To combat of childhood poverty, Save the Children, a non-profit dedicated to improving the standard of living for kids around the world, recently launched its Freedom from Poverty campaign.
Celebrities Jennifer Garner, Julianne Moore, and Randy Jackson are helping raise awareness for the campaign by encouraging people to sign the Freedom from Poverty pledge and be a part of the solution to alleviate childhood poverty around the country. The goal is to have 15,000 signatures by August 14, when the campaign ends.
Save the Children also has a child sponsorship program that helps provide resources (such as books, computers, after-school learning programs, activities, and snacks) to impoverished kids. You can sponsor a child on their Freedom from Poverty page.
To sign the pledge, visit the pledge page online or text READ to 69866.

By now, you probably already know that Beyoncé gave birth to a baby girl, Blue Ivy, with husband Jay-Z this weekend. There have been numerous reports about the celebrity couple’s experience at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and the hospital is being accused of providing the famous duo with special treatment at the expense of other patients. In an article in the New York Times, one father, Edgar Ramirez, says security guards for the star kept him from seeing his wife and newborn for three hours.
But Lenox Hill Hospital has released an official statement in response to the criticism:
“The family does have its own security detail on site. However, the hospital has been and continues to be in control of managing all security at the facility. We have made every effort to ensure minimal disruption to other families experiencing the births of their own children over the past three days. No security plan that we or the Carters’ security team put in place would have prevented or delayed families from gaining access to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and to date, no families have complained to the hospital about being denied access to the NICU.”
There has been a lot of media attention surrounding Beyoncé’s pregnancy (from us, too), but we sincerely hope other parents didn’t suffer because of the singer’s celebrity. Baby Blue may have already gotten her own blog post, but we believe all babies — famous parents or not — deserve the same, wonderful treatment.

Congratulations to Beyoncé and Jay-Z on the birth of their first child! The couple welcomed a baby girl last night at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, according to People.
Multiple celebs have taken to Twitter to confirm the news.
“Welcome to the world princess Carter! Love Aunty Rih”
Gwyneth Paltrow tweeted:
“Welcome to the world Blue! We love you already.”
The only thing we’re still unsure of is the baby’s name. E! News originally reported last night that the little girl’s name is Ivy Blue, but they’re now reporting that her name is Blue Ivy.
Which name do you prefer?

Alicia Silverstone and husband Christopher Jarecki welcomed a baby boy last Thursday, May 5, just in time for the first time mom to celebrate her first Mother’s Day.
Mom and Dad are completely in love with their beautiful baby boy, according to a statement from Silverstone’s rep. At birth he weighed in at 7 lbs., 15 oz.
The couple named their son Bear Blu, joining the ranks of celebrity parents opting for a super-unique baby name rather than a classic or popular one. Knowing that Silverstone is a major animal lover, PETA activist, and vegan, maybe an animal-themed baby name shouldn’t surprise us.

Rachel Zoe and Rodger Berman welcomed a baby boy this week who may just grow up to the most stylish man in Hollywood. Zoe reportedly went into labor on Tuesday night and now her rep has confirmed to People that Skyler Morrison Berman has arrived, weighing in at 6 lbs., 12 oz. and 20 inches long.
Zoe, 39, has shared her hesitations about starting a family on her Bravo hit reality series, The Rachel Zoe Project. The hesitations came as no surprise considering her demanding work schedule. Luckily she scaled back on work during her pregnancy recently telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I can say in all honesty that being pregnant, working with the kind of people I work with and being this businesswoman has been a really wonderful, drama-free time in my life.”
After the arrival of their son, the couple said in a statement, “Mom and Dad ‘LITERALLY’ could not be happier or more in love with their son!”
We can’t wait to see how Skyler’s stylist mommy will dress him for his first big photo shoot!

On “CSI: Miami,” she totes a gun as Detective Calleigh Duquesne, but in real life actress Emily Procter is now toting something softer–a new baby girl, Philippa Frances.
According to a new story on Parade.com, the new mother just gave birth at 42-years-old, after struggling for a long time with infertility. Speaking openly, Procter shares she had IUI (intrauterine insemination) and IVF (in vitro fertilization) two times. She and her husband, music producer Paul Bryan, also considered adoption.
As a child, Procter herself was adopted by a couple in North Carolina, who later divorced when she was 3-years-old. Depite the divorce, Procter grew up feeling very loved and close to her family, which also included an adopted brother. In the end, Procter and her husband decided to forego the long process of adoption and also stop the treatments. Once this happened, Procter became pregnant naturally and gave birth to a baby around 7 pounds.
However, adoption isn’t fully off the table–Proctor may adopt a child over 5-years-old in a few years. In the meantime, she’s finally enjoying the sweet joys of motherhood.

Actress Christina Applegate and fiance Martyn LeNoble are the proud new parents of daughter Sadie Grace LeNoble. Christina gave birth to the 7lb 8 oz. baby girl last Thursday, January 27, 2011 in Los Angeles. A source close to the new parents told People, “She’s a beautiful little girl, and they are so happy in love with her.”
While pregnant, the former Married with Children actress, 39, told People that she expects her mothering style to “be a little bit hippie and a little bit Type A. I’ll take from what my mother did, which was way hippie and like ‘Do what you wanna do,’ and bring some things that I know from watching my friends raise their kids. An amalgamation of sorts.”
