My last baby popped out 6 years ago, but I vividly remember the feeling that everything—my strength, energy, muscle tone and stamina—had been completely zapped. Where I was once able to run two miles up and down steep hills for exercise, all of a sudden, walking up and down the stairs to the laundry room was as strenuous as running a marathon. I reassured my latest yoga student—her adorable baby is 6 weeks old—to start slowly and steadily. All of our muscles remember what they used to do and luckily, our minds are even stronger than our bodies. We can think ourselves back into fitness.
I learned all of this at the amazing Yoga Journal Conference I attended in November. For yoga geeks, it was a dream come true. I spent two days in an intensive anatomy workshop with the brilliant celebrity teacher Jason Crandell. He taught me about muscles and bones—and how to make them strong. Another famous yogi, Kathryn Budig, taught arm balances (these are post-post natal moves you’ll love working up to). I did some crazy 8-point pose (see photo) where my arms were bent and my legs were parallel in the air about a foot off the ground. I thought, ‘I’ve come a long, long way since my kids were born.” I was so proud of myself. As Kathryn had said earlier, “getting stronger is amazing and empowering.”
For the holidays and New Year, I, of course, recommend yoga. In the wise words of the great teacher and sage Cyndi Lee, sometimes you have to put you first. “Take care of yourself so you can be a better mom, business partner, whatever. You can take better care of other people when you take care of yourself first. Only then will you have a little extra to give.”
If you’re interested, the next Yoga Journal Live conference is in San Fran on January 16 through 20. I’ll be at the YJ Live in New York City in April. Message me if you’ll be there, and we can meet up. I’ll definitely post new-mom moves I get from there, so stay tuned.
So go ahead and get started now. I’ve posted one of my favorite beginner videos by Jason. He’s a super-safe and inspiring teacher who offers this cool and relaxing 15-minute beginner yoga sequence. I’m taking this to my postnatal client on Friday.

The urgency to lose the baby weight in Hollywood is almost as serious as an Oscar win.
Who dropped the postpartum pounds the fastest? Who debuted their post-baby body on a magazine cover? How much did she gain during her pregnancy?
Some of our favorite celebrity moms – including Drew Barrymore, Jessica Simpson, and Gwyneth Paltrow – are sounding off on this buzzed about topic.
Former child star Drew Barrymore recently sat down with talk show queen Oprah Winfrey and opened up about husband Will Kopelman and their 4-month-old daughter Olive.
“Absolutely not. I want nothing to do with that hamster wheel from hell,” Drew said of quickly dropping the baby weight to appease Hollywood’s standards.
She added: “It seems miserable. I want to be healthy enough that I feel good mentally and I don’t care what the weight is,” the E.T. star said.
Mom-of-two Gwyneth Paltrow supported her good pal, celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, at her Pregnancy Project event in New York City last Fall.
“You can really put the pressure on yourself — I didn’t,” Gwyneth has said of shedding her postpartum pounds after giving birth to her now 8-year-old daughter Apple and son Moses, 6.
The Academy Award-winning actress said that she revelled in new motherhood and took her time to lose those last few pounds.
“I was at home in sweatpants and breastfeeding for a long time,” Gwyneth shared. “I really took my time. And when I started to want to get back into shape, I was so thankful to find Tracy.”
Celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson recently launched her Pregnancy Project workout DVD collection, providing women with safe and effective fitness routines during the pre-and-postnatal periods.
Tracy tells Celebrity Baby Scoop that these DVDs – which she filmed during her recent pregnancy with daughter Penelope – are a “passion project” that are “really needed for women.” The fitness guru – who has an impressive client list including Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna, Molly Sims, and Christy Turlington – opened up about losing the 33 pounds she gained in just 11 weeks.
“I’ve spent thirteen years creating this fitness method for women and I use it myself, so I really credit the method for staying fit in the prenatal and postnatal stages,” Tracy shared with Celebrity Baby Scoop.
“In my first pregnancy 14 years ago, I gained 60 pounds and it was the most nightmarish thing to get off,” she added. “I was so happy to not have to worry about going into pregnancy this time; I knew what I was doing. I followed my own advice during this second pregnancy and gained around 33 pounds. I was able to lose it all in about eleven weeks.”
Jessica Simpson’s 50-pound weight gain during her first pregnancy was one of the most talked-about topics of last year.
The Fashion Star mentor recently graced the January/February 2013 cover of Weight Watchers magazine, showing off her weight loss after the May 1 arrival of her daughter Maxwell.
“I really have to separate myself from the world’s expectations and really just be healthy with myself,” Jessica shared. “I’m not a supermodel. My body is not bouncing back like a supermodel. I’m just your everyday woman.”
And all eyes are on the singer-turned-entrepreneur again. On Christmas Day, Jessica confirmed her second pregnancy by sharing a picture of baby Maxwell with the words “Big Sis” written in the sand in front of her.
Former Playboy model Kendra Wilkinson welcomed her first child, son Hank, with football star husband Hank Baskett in December 2009.
The Girls Next Door star opened up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about the media’s focus on her body during the pre-and-postnatal stages.
“The media is the media. They’re going to do what they please. I’m okay with it,” said Kendra of the constant criticism of her weight.
“I had to really look deep into myself and think more about myself,” she added. “I’m a deep thinker and there’s this thing I always think about: what if today, mirrors just went away. What if your reflection just went away? What if I had no pictures of myself? Would I feel great, would I feel pretty? And the answer is: yes I would. The mirror can play tricks on you.”

Losing the baby weight is challenging for most women. But when you’re a celebrity mom, Hollywood’s beauty standards can make the postpartum period downright miserable.
Let’s take a look at 5 high-profile mamas who have opened up about weight loss post-pregnancy. Read about Gisele Bündchen‘s “muscle memory,” to Hilary Duff not losing the baby weight “overnight,” to Gwen Stefani admitting it was “no miracle” that she’s regained her svelte figure.
American Pie star Alyson Hannigan and her husband, actor Alexis Denisof, welcomed their second daughter, Keeva Jane, on May 23. The Buffy alums are also parents to 3-year-old daughter Satyana.
Since welcoming baby Keeva, Alyson has talked about not losing the baby weight quickly enough for Tinseltown.
“I think by Hollywood standards I’m supposed to be in bikini shape now that my baby is 4 weeks old,” she playfully tweeted. “My workout goal: Food drops in lap, not on belly.”
Despite her woes, fans of the How I Met Your Mother star showed their support for “setting a good example” and not rushing to lose the baby weight.
Alyson replied, “I still haven’t lost all the weight from my first daughter. Oh well.”
Lizzie McGuire actress Hilary Duff and husband, hockey star Mike Comrie, welcomed their first child, son Luca, on March 20. The Disney darling recently said that she enjoyed eating during her pregnancy.
“My whole life you know I worked out and exercised and been in the public eye and always watched what I ate. This was like a vacation,” Hilary said of enjoying eating during pregnancy. “I had a blast. I wouldn’t go back and change it. I had a lot of fun.”
The new mom has also opened up about her postpartum weight loss.
“I’m not perfect, but I feel fantastic,” she said. “This is how it goes for most women – the weight doesn’t fall off overnight.”
The actress-singer, 24, added that she’s been exercising “a few” times a week, mixing spin classes with private training sessions.
She added that her hubby “doesn’t care” about her extra pregnancy weight, and added, “Even during my pregnancy he thought I was beautiful.”
Supermodel Gisele Bündchen and her husband, football star Tom Brady, welcomed their first child together, son Benjamin, on December 8, 2009.
The Brazilian beauty talked about regaining her figure almost instantly after Benjamin’s birth.
“I think it’s muscle memory,” Gisele said. “I did kung fu up until two weeks before Benjamin was born, and yoga three days a week. I think a lot of people get pregnant and decide they can turn into garbage disposals. I was mindful about what I ate, and I gained only 30 pounds.”
Actress Molly Sims and husband Scott Stuber welcomed their first child, son Brooks Alan, on June 19. The new mom recently opened up about her mission to lose the 50 pounds of baby weight that she gained during her first pregnancy.
“Eating during my pregnancy was easy, but losing the baby weight – that’s going to be a whole other story,” Molly wrote on MollySims.com. “As much as I tried to stick to a healthy diet and exercise routine while I was pregnant, I ended up gaining 50 pounds—so let’s just say I have my work cut out for me! But no matter what it takes, being in the best shape possible has always been very important to me. I’m more than willing to put in the work to get my pre-baby body back.”
Rockers Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are parents to two sons – Kingston, 6, and Zuma, nearly 4. Five months after welcoming Kingston, Gwen talked about her postpartum weight loss.
“That’s been really hard,” she said of losing the weight. “But it’s almost gone. I’ve just been eating healthy,” she said, adding, “I cheat every day at least once.”
The uber-svelte No Doubt frontwoman has admitted to struggling with her weight and body image after having two children. She said that her current figure is “no miracle” and that it took eight months to lose the baby weight after the arrival of Zuma.
And even Gavin chimed in about the pressures on his wife to lose the baby weight under the limelight.
“Yeah, she does [feel under pressure to lose the weight fast], Gavin said. “I mean, she’s just so dedicated and she’s just amazing with that stuff (weight loss). It’s very hard because everyone’s so judged the whole time.”
