Since they won the coveted title of favorite baby carrier in our American Baby Bests Awards, I looked forward to seeing the BabyBjörn folks this past week at the ABC trade show, a big industry event held this year in Louisville, KY. It’s always a treat to see all the colors and variations of the BabyBjörn in one place! Their new-for-2013 colors are shown here, raspberry and light blue.
Three things you may not know about BabyBjörn carriers: One, they’re named after their founder, Björn Jakobson, whose first product invention was a bouncer seat. (He moved on from there to baby carriers, which won him a lot more fame.) Two, Björn’s wife, Lillemor, is still the head designer. She and her husband have been running their company for more than 50 years now, so they are no spring chickens, but they’re as spirited as ever. (Check out this video fashion show about the history.) And finally, the BabyBjörn fabrics are Oeko-Tex certified, which is basically the European standard for “green.”
They’ll give away two of the brand-new BabyBjörn Original carriers, worth $80 and shown above. To be eligible, leave a comment below. (Note: Your comment may not show up right away, don’t panic!) Tell us where you wear your baby, or, if you’re pregnant, what you see yourself doing with the carrier. You can leave up to one comment a day, today through Wednesday, October 24. The official rules are all here. Goody luck!

Baby Bjorn's Babysitter Balance
And no, we don’t mean someone who will watch your kid, though that’s certainly useful around New Year’s Eve. We mean the Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance, which is an infant seat that can last you through the toddler years. I got one of these when my daughter was about 10 months old and had a cold; she had outgrown the bouncer seat and swing, but still needed to be sitting comfortably upright to breathe easily. A friend recommended it, and it worked like a charm. She sat in it (as a TV-watching chair, please don’t judge) through age 3. Then we used it for my son.
I got to thinking about the Babysitter Balance because of all the reports of other baby seats, mainly the Bumbo, tipping over when on a high surface. An advantage of the Babysitter is it’s pretty obvious it doesn’t go on a chair or counter; the wide base relegates it to the floor. And it has safety straps to hold a baby in place. The only downside is the price: $180. But it’s a good value, because you’ll use it for years with multiple kids. But don’t just trust me; it gets lots of 5-star reviews on Amazon.com.
Another safe place to put an older, sitting-upright baby is in an ExerSaucer, or a Jumperoo, or some other stationary activity center. Or in the highchair (use the straps!). I’m sure someone will want to comment “how about just holding your kid?” but everyone needs a safe place to sit a baby for 20 minutes here and there during the day, to use the bathroom, get dressed, or make a meal. Most of the day you can hold your baby or wear her in a carrier, but while you shower is just not one of those times!
How do you solve the challenge of either keeping your sniffly baby upright, or seating your baby somewhere safe? Leave a comment below; one lucky poster will win the Baby Bjorn Babysitter Balance for their child! It’s a light blue seat with dark blue trim, but otherwise, just like the one pictured here, and a $180 retail value. You have through Wednesday, December 28th to post and can post just once a day; read the full rules here. Goody luck!
