The Kindle Fire Gets More Kid-Friendly

Tuesday, September 25th, 2012

Worried what your kid might try to download on your Kindle tablet? Amazon can help! The online store is coming out with Kindle FreeTime, which will help make your device more kid-friendly. The free service allows parents to build a profile for their kids directly on the Kindle Fire HD tablet. You can specify what books, apps, movies, and music you want your kid to have access to.  Then, when you switch into FreeTime mode, the actual display shifts to more kid-friendly fonts and text sizes. Plus, you can limit screen time on certain things–for example, you can give kids two hours for games or video but leave reading unlocked all day. A bigger bonus? Kids who can’t read or struggle with it can navigate the tablet based on visual characters or topics. Find out more information here on Amazon.com!

Pilot’s New Pens

Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Your kids may be back in the classroom already, but our guess is that you still have some odds and ends to

pick up to round out their supply stash. When you head to the office supply store this week, be sure to check out Pilot’s new line of FriXion pens.

Erasable pens used to be synonymous with sticky ink and poor erasers, but FriXion pens are changing all of that. Kids will love them because they write like a smooth roller ball pen and the ink resembles that of a gel pen in both color and consistency.

These new and improved pens are especially great for grade-schoolers who are getting away from using just pencils and, like their name conveys, they erase through friction which means kids don’t have to press as hard to correct mistakes and marks. The rounded rubber ball at the bottom of the pen wears away ink like magic. Plus the line comes in an awesome array of colors that are perfect for school and doodling at home.

If you love the pens, you’ll probably also love the brand’s erasable highlighters! Be sure to check out the FriXion Light Erasable Highlighters and the FriXion Erasable Gel Pens out here.

All Dolled Up

Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

If your kid still has Tangled on repeat and made you take her to see Beauty and the Beast in 3D just to see the Tangled short, beware – she’s about to fall in love all over again. Out today is a limited edition Rapunzel doll from Tangled Ever After. Unlike the other Rapunzel dolls on sale, it features the Princess as a brunette in her wedding dress. The doll really is just stunning: It’s not your typical Barbie. For starters, she’s 17 inches tall, and the details on the dress are out of this world. I’m pretty sure it’s nicer than most wedding dresses I’ve seen in real life.

Disney Stores will only be releasing 8,000 copies of the doll so you’ve got to grab her quick!

Happy Hanukkah Holiday Shopping!

Thursday, December 8th, 2011

As a kid growing up in a Jewish home, it was nearly IMPOSSIBLE to find decorations for my house…other than a menorah. Trying to find gifts for my family members? Forget about it! Manufacturers don’t make Hanukkah Santa hats or blue-and-white candy canes. Head into any  store and you’ll find rows of Christmas stuff, and if you’re lucky, a small rack dedicated to me and my fellow Jews. However, it seems this year that retailers are finally recognizing my shopping nightmare–and have granted us all a holiday wish: toys for those who don’t celebrate Christmas! Check out Build-a-Bear for quite a few blue-and-white customization options. If you don’t feel like getting creative, they even have a pre-made bear (featured to the right) all set and ready to buy! If you’re looking for a festive story time, you can check out the awesome Chanukah Lights pop-up book by Michael J. Rosen and Robert Sabuda. Then, when all is said and done, head on over to Dylan’s Candy Bar for a variety of Hanukkah themed treats to nosh on. They’ve got everything from Gift Baskets to individual chocolate bars to chocolate dreidels. Happy Hanukkah!

A Priceless Christmas in New York

Tuesday, December 6th, 2011

Everyone loves Manhattan at Christmas time – it’s simply stunning between the decorations on the outside of buildings and the tree at Rockefeller Center. To make it even more special this year, Mastercard is providing its customers with another insider experience. They’ve created a one-of-a-kind shopping trip at FAO Schwarz, the famed NYC toy emporium. This holiday season customers can arrive at the store on December 22, an hour before it opens to take a private tour with the super-fun toy soldiers that guard its entrance. The tour teaches visitors about the history of this incredible toy land, and basically offers up the store as a private playground for all who take advantage of it. Visitors can dance on the famed big piano or shop around before any one else – avoiding the tourist crowds during this frantic time of year. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience that is sure to be – priceless. For more details and other events, visit the Mastercard website here.
