Think Pink

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Melissa Etheridge PerformanceHard Rock’s Pinktober is a rockin’ way to raise awareness for breast cancer. The month-long parties and music events, featuring a host of musicians such as Melissa Etheridge, have helped raise money for the cause. Goody Blogger Martha Pierce recently had the chance to chat with Melissa about what it’s like being a breast cancer survivor and a mom. Here’s what she had to say.

How would you suggest talking to kids about dealing with breast cancer? I certainly didn’t want to scare my children, but I wanted them to know the truth. I said, “My body has a cold and I need to take it out so the cold doesn’t spread to the rest of my body.” My son was so compassionate, even at 6-years-old. My kids joked with me about being bald and pale, but now they look back and completely understand what I was going through.

How do you connect with other moms who struggle with breast cancer? I tell them that breast cancer can be a gift; a moment of understanding what balance and health is in our life. It helps many women come to a place of understanding: we have to take care of ourselves before we can be of any good to anyone else.

Find out how you can catch a Pinktober show near you, as well as other ways to support the cause here!

Are You Getting the Flu Shot?

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

If you’re pregnant, doctors say you should. Last year’s swine flu epidemic brought extra attention to the need for expecting women to get the shot, but even though the flu fuss has died down, don’t think you can get away without a jab this year; experts warn that any kind of flu is risky if you’re pregnant. Just keep in mind that while the influenza shot is safe during any trimester of pregnancy, the nasal spray version–FluMist, which is made from a live virus–should be avoided (but is okay if you’re breastfeeding). If vaccinated, you’ll not only protect yourself from getting sick, but you’ll also pass on your immunity to your baby to protect her until she’s old enough to get the shot.

Have you made an appointment for your flu shot yet?

Guilt-Free Cupcakes

Wednesday, September 22nd, 2010

Need a do-good activity for the week? Here’s a sweet idea: Decorate and send virtual cupcakes to friends and family to help raise money for CancerCare for Kids, an organization that provides free counseling, support and financial assistance for families dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Your tot will get a kick out of decorating the mess-free e-cupcake with sprinkles, piping and other goodies, but we can’t promise you won’t become addicted to playing with the faux frostings either. But it’s not all just fun and games– haircare product company got2b will donate $1 to CancerCare for each cupcake sent in September, up to $10,000… so get decorating!

Back-to-School for Mom?

Thursday, September 9th, 2010

Arianna_PRIt’s been awhile since I’ve had a first day of classes, but this time of year still gets me excited for a new “back-to-school” wardrobe for fall. So I’m asking all you moms to ‘fess up– when you were school shopping for your kid, did you indulge in a lil’ something something for yourself as well? If not, I’ve got some suggestions (I know, I know, peer pressure is the worst…).

1. Your kid got a new bag, why shouldn’t you? Check out Susan Nichole’s line of animal-friendly and stunning handbags, like the Arianna style shown here. (Check out their Facebook page next week for giveaways!)

2. Hit up your local bookstore to add a fun novel to your reading list.

3. You’re never too old for new school supplies. Sharpie’s new liquid pencil is as cool as writing utensils get, and will make doodling even more addictive.

4. Hmm… can moms outgrow their shoes too? If so, I’m coveting this seriously showstopping pair of boots from Modcloth.

5. The downright adorableness of Fluf’s lunchbags (the Chirp! design kills me) would make me want to pack a lunch for every meal.

What would you choose to put in your “back-to-school” shopping cart?

Keep Your Kid Close

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

2StackingRivetRingsHRThe first days of school can be hard for kids. But let’s face it, they’re pretty hard for mom too, especially if it’s your first time sending your tot off on that school bus. Our advice? Stock up on the tissues, and check out these sweet ways to be reminded of your munchkin throughout the day.

Don’t worry, it’s totally normal to blank on your kid’s name, or refer to her by the dog’s moniker. But these pretty stackable rings from Heart & Stone jewelry will solve that problem

Keep your child close with this beautiful locket from Cambria Cove.

A photo bookmark with your little one marking the page will give you even more incentive to steal some time with a favorite read.

Tote around this personalized bag to show off your cute kid to everyone you pass.

Message in a Lunchbox

Monday, August 30th, 2010

CoolMomPicks_6bBack-to-School can be a scary time, so sometimes it’s nice to know that Mom–or Dad– is thinking of you with a little lunchbox surprise. Here are some ways to spread the love.

* Write an “I love you” message on a banana.

* Slip a Lunchbox Love note into her pack. The cards have cute phrases like “I’m your biggest fan” on one side and fun facts on the back. Through September, use the promo code to the right (LBLCMP) to get 10 percent off your Lunchbox Love purchase.

* Tear out a comic from the morning paper and pack it with the rest of his snacks to give him a lunchtime laugh.

* And maybe the most amazing of all, do like this dad, who creates a lunchbag masterpiece for his kids everyday.

What do you do to let your child know you’re thinking of him?
