Former boxer and Dancing with the Stars contestant, Laila Ali, is teaming up with Everyday Health TV in Around the Clock, a new daily discussion show alongside fellow celebrity moms such as Jillian Michaels, Kendra Wilkinson and Ali Landry to share “personal opinions” and health tips.
The mom-of-two opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her kids – son C.J. who turns 4 in August, and 13-month-old daughter Sydney - their upcoming summer plans, and growing up with boxing legend father Muhammad Ali.
CBS: Tell us about Everyday Health TV’s Around the Clock YouTube show. What is it all about, and how are you involved?
LA: “Around the Clock is a new show on YouTube’s Emmy-nominated Everyday Health channel that focuses on certain health topics and how we feel about them. Sometimes the topics are funny and sometimes they are more serious. It is a quick daily topic talk show for moms.
I am one of the moms on the show, along with Kendra Wilkinson, Camila Alves, Heather Armstrong, and Ali Landry. We all talk about the topic of the day and give our personal opinions.
The viewers can also leave comments and request questions that they would like us to tackle. That’s what will happen as the show grows; we will look at the topics that are the most popular and talk about them on the show.”
CBS: How are your kids Sydney and C.J.? Do they get along well? What are they into these days?
LA: “Sydney is 13 months and C.J. is 3, getting ready to turn 4-years-old in August. They are growing so quickly! C.J. is in Pre-K and loves his sister. Of course there are struggles, like when C.J. is playing with his toys and Sydney comes over and knocks down something he built [laughs]. He will want to knock her over and I’ll be like, ‘Don’t do that! Be careful with your sister!’
A lot of times he wants to hug her and pick her up, but he can’t [laughs]. For the most part they get along really well, and it is funny how they have this little relationship of their own. Even though she can’t talk, she gets so excited when he comes home from school, and she also gets mad when he leaves and she can’t go. They also give each other hugs, which makes me as happy as I can be!
In regard to what they are into now, Sydney loves music. Whenever she hears music, she starts dancing. Her favorite thing to do is try to open up my kitchen cabinets and take everything out [laughs]. She also loves to open up my kitchen drawers and cabinets and take out my kitchen towels, put them on her head, and try to walk into things. So I really have to watch her when she tries to ‘help’ me in the kitchen [laughs].
C.J. is really into trains and cars, and every night he has three things that he has to take to bed with him. Every night it is something different, and he won’t go to bed unless he has them. He will ask, ‘Where’s my car?’ ‘Where’s my dog?’ He wants to take any little random thing to bed with him [laughs].
CBS: What aspects of motherhood do you love the most?
LA: “Watching my kids grow, form their personalities, and come into their own independence are aspects that I love. They are little people, and I get to help shape the way they look at the world and the way they think of themselves, and I get to guide them along. They are going to be who they are, but my job is to help them with their foundations and make them strong, which makes me feel confident as a mom that they will make the right decisions in life.”
CBS: Do you have any special motherhood moments to share?
LA: “With my son, the moments that I love with him, now that he can actually talk and have a conversation, are when he says, ‘I love you mommy every night and gives me kisses. I say, ‘Give me my kisses and hugs!’ It makes me so happy and I always think to myself, ‘O god, there is going to be a time when he doesn’t want kisses or hugs anymore!’ [laughs] I have to cherish these moments now.
My daughter is the same; she will actually grab me by the back of my neck with both of her arms and pull my face to hers for a kiss. I love that, because I grew up with my father and my father loved kids and kisses. Not all people love that…oh, and I am not talking about on the mouth! [laughs] I would be like, ‘Daddy! Daddy! Muah, Muah, Muah!’ and kiss all over his face. My kids are the same way. It is funny how it runs in our bloodline—we are a kissing family [laughs].”
CBS: What are your favorite childhood memories of summer vacation? What do you plan to do with your family this summer?
LA: “As a child, we didn’t go on summer vacations. I just remember that my stepsisters would come over and everyone would be there. It was great to have everyone come to the house to go swimming together and pile up in the car together. It was a lot of fun…summers were always family time.
In regard to my plans for this summer, I plan to do a lot of swimming and I want to enroll my son in official swimming lessons and get Sydney in the water. I want to do a lot of outdoor activities, like take them to the beach. We haven’t really done that, because I wanted to wait until my son was old enough. You have to be careful with the kids and sand; I don’t want that situation where my daughter gets sand in her eyes. I want to take my son to the beach and do a lot of swimming, and maybe get him on the back of a bike. A lot of outdoor activities.”
CBS: How do you balance work and family life?
LA: “Family comes first and is my priority. I know how to say ‘no’ to things, like I don’t do a lot of traveling. It is a matter of looking at what’s on the schedule and making sure I always have enough time to be home with my kids. It is very important to me that I am available to cook them dinner and be there before they go to sleep. I want to make sure I am there. I had a lot of nannies around, because my parents were traveling a lot and couldn’t always be there, and I just don’t want that for my kids.”

There’s a reason why you and your friends bug one another to vote for each others adorable kids in the Parents Cover Contest — there’s a lot at stake, after all! You could win a spot on the magazine cover, an all-expenses paid trip to New York City, a professional photo shoot, and $10,000! Plus, there are all the memories you’ll share with your little one!
The parents of past cover contest finalists will tell you that entering your kid’s photo is totally worth your time. We caught up with a few of them to find out what they’re up to now, and about their family’s experience with the contest.
Justina Kubat, son Jordyn, 2011 Finalist
What did you think when you were notified your child was a finalist?
When we were notified Jordyn (pictured) was selected I was in shock, I read the email over and over again! I couldn’t believe Jordyn was noticed and selected out of the tens of thousands of entrants. After the initial shock wore off I was so excited and so happy for our little guy.
What was your favorite part of the trip?
We live in PA, but I’ve never been to NYC. Just getting a chance to experience the city was amazing. We enjoyed walking to Central Park and going to the zoo.
What does your child remember from trip?
Jordyn was only 10 months old when we went to NYC. I’m sure he won’t remember the experience, but I’d have to say that meeting Elmo in Central Park was the highlight of the trip for him. He loves Elmo more than anything! I’m so glad we took photos for when he’s older.
Describe your experience at the photo shoot.
Every employee of Parent’s Magazine was so welcoming. They were fantastic with the kids and knew how to interact with them to get them to show their personalities. The kids were not pressured into being or acting out of their element. The important part is that they were treated as kids! When they were done (aka having a meltdown), the staff knew it and didn’t push them to keep going. Overall the studio was amazing, the staff was awesome, and the kids really did have fun!!!
What advice do you have for this year’s entrants?
My advice to this years parents is to ENTER! I never thought my son would be chosen as a finalist, I’m sure I was doubted by so many when I kept asking them to vote for him on Facebook. It was definitely worth it. Never say never, anything can happen and we were very excited to be selected. To those who think the photo shoot would hard on their child, it isn’t. It was the most amazing and enjoyable experience. The kids are treated as kids and are not pushed to do more than “just be kids”.

Beware baby teething gels! The Federal Drug Administration has re-issued a warning that they made last spring against gels made with benzocaine, a local anesthetic used to soothe teething pain. The substance can cause methemoglobinemia, a serious, and sometimes deadly, condition that reduces oxygen in the bloodstream. Benzocaine can be found in name-brand products such as Baby Orajel, Orajel, Anbesol, Hurricaine, and Orabase.
We suggest soothing your babe’s gums with a benzocaine-free gel such as Baby Orajel Naturals and Camilia from Boiron. You can also let her use chew on cold teething toys or washcloths,or give her a gum message to help ease her discomfort.
More on benzocaine from the FDA.

TV host Samantha Harris loves the “profound” experience of motherhood! The Dancing with the Stars alum took part in Saturday’s March for Babies walk in Los Angeles. A “longtime supporter” of March of Dimes, Samantha says the money raised will “help all moms, including at-risk women, have healthy full-term pregnancies.”
Samantha opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about being a “strong advocate for anti-hunger issues” and “empower[ing] women to have healthy, full-term pregnancies.” The mom-of-two also talks about her “completely different” daughters Josselyn, 4, and 15-month-old Hilary, the joys of motherhood, and the possibility of baby No. 3: “Never say never!”
CBS: Tell us about partnering with March of Dimes and their March for Babies walk in LA.
SH: “I’m a longtime supporter of the March of Dimes. Their mission is to empower women to have healthy, full-term pregnancies. They’ve been around for years, and the work they do for women is unprecedented. The March of Dimes raises money to help all moms, including at-risk women, have healthy full-term pregnancies.
The March of Dimes has raised millions of dollars during their March for Babies walks across the country. I’m honored to be part of the Los Angeles walk at Exposition Park this weekend. It’s an amazing event and I’m so excited to host the morning’s opening ceremonies.
There are so many stories of poverty, malnutrition and inadequate healthcare all over the word. And really, all those things also exist right here in our backyards. Many women right here in the USA are giving birth to premature babies. The March of Dimes raises millions of dollars through the March for Babies walks across the U.S. to benefit all babies.
And not to mention, they’re an amazing online resource for women everywhere! There is a ton of information for expectant moms on their site [MarchOfDimes.com].”
CBS: How are Josselyn and Hilary doing? What are they into?
SH: “They are great! Hilary is now 15-months and Josselyn is 4-years-old. They’re both so bright and completely different personalities! Hilary goes head-first into everything – she has no fear! She will jump off everything and just go full-force ahead.
Josselyn is the cautious one and always considers safety first. It’s funny, I thought she was like that because I was an over-protective first-time mom. But then when Hilary came along and showed her daredevil personality at such a young age, I realized it’s just a part of who they both are. I’m constantly amazed as I watch them grow into their own.”
CBS: What are some of your favorite mommy memories with your girls?
SH: “There are so many, so I’ve actually decided to start writing down their special moments into a journal. I plan to give it to them when they’re older. Whether it’s something funny they just said, or a milestone, or a special day we’ve just had, I write it down and post it in their book. I’ve realized I’m not used to handwriting anymore, so I might resort to writing something quickly on my phone or on the computer and printing it off.
I just remember how special it felt to look back at the baby albums my mom made for me, and I want my girls to have that. Of course, my older sister has millions of photos of her every move and there’s barely any pictures of me, so I want to make sure Hilary has something to look back onto [laughs]!”
CBS: What is your favorite part of motherhood?
SH: “I love how my girls use the word ‘love.’ Both of them tell me they love me and it melts my heart. ‘I love you’ was Hilary’s first 3-sentence blurb. I will tell her ‘I love you’ and she replies now with ‘I yuv yu.’ And for Josselyn, ‘love’ was the second word she learned how to spell. The first was her name. Just hearing that word and feeling the unconditional love between us is beyond amazing.”

New mom Hilary Duff is loving motherhood and her “well behaved” bundle of joy! The Lizzie McGuire alum welcomed first child, son Luca Cruz, on March 20 with hockey star husband Mike Comrie. The actress, author, entrepreneur and recording artist, 24, has partnered with JOHNSON’S® Baby and Save the Children “to help other moms and babies throughout the world.”
Hilary opens up to Celebrity Baby Scoop about her “amazing” newborn son who “sleeps like a pro,” her increased “sense of confidence as a mom compared to Day 1,” and her breastfeeding and Pilates routines.
CBS: Tell us about partnering with JOHNSON’S® Baby and Save the Children for the launch of a new charitable platform, JOHNSON’S® Baby CARES.
HD: “Now that I’m a mom, I’ve been touched and inspired to help other moms and babies throughout the world. This is why I teamed up with the JOHNSON’S® Baby CARES campaign in support of Save the Children, which helps to provide funding and resources to ensure families have basic essentials to care for their babies in times of crisis.
So many children live in areas that are at risk for natural disasters. Each year, Save the Children responds to at least 30 crises globally – from the smaller, local events that we may not hear about on the news, to the larger, more extreme ones – all of which have a tremendous impact on babies and children, who are always the most vulnerable in these times.”
CBS: How can we get involved?
HD: “You can support this campaign by visiting the JOHNSON’S® Baby CARES tab on JOHNSON’S Facebook page to learn more about the partnership with Save the Children.”
CBS: Congratulations on the birth of Luca Cruz! How is he doing? What kind of baby is he so far?
HD: “Amazing! He is very well behaved – he eats and sleeps like a pro!”
CBS: How have you adjusted to motherhood? What are some of the the biggest challenges and greatest joys so far?
HD: “Getting Luca on a schedule that works for both of us – it’s tough at first but he is getting better every day. The joy I get comes from seeing him grow every day and get stronger. Also, the sense of confidence I have as a mom compared to Day 1.”
CBS: Are you breastfeeding Luca? If so, how’s that going?
HD: “Yes, it’s like a lot of things you take on in life. You have to experience it to understand. No one can do it for you.”
CBS: We’ve already spotted you out and about at the gym. Tell us about your postpartum workout routine.
HD: “I started doing Pilates and spin classes just like I did before Luca. Back to the routine!”
CBS: Are you hoping Luca will follow in your showbiz shoes, or maybe hit the skates like his dad?
HD: “There is no pressure from either of us. He will choose his own path and we will support what he is passionate about.”
CBS: How did you come up with the name Luca Cruz?
HD: “Mike and I were just bouncing names off each other, and Luca just stuck. We both knew when we heard it, it was unique but not crazy.”
CBS: What’s up next for you? A maternity leave, or will you be returning to work soon?
HD: “I am just enjoying being a mom. There is no pressure on me to get back to doing anything in particular, but I love to stay active and work as much as possible so it won’t be long. Time will tell…”

From Sarah Michelle Gellar‘s frequent Starbucks trips with Charlotte, Jennifer Garner’s park playdates with the Violet and Seraphina, to Alyson Hannigan’s Santa Monica strolls with Satyana, we love seeing our favorite celebrity moms out and about with their gorgeous kids!
Sarah Michelle Gellar:
We can’t get enough of Buffy alum Sarah Michelle Gellar! The 35-year-old actress and husband Freddie Prinze, Jr. are parents to 2-year-old daughter Charlotte. “Charlotte is my best friend, and any free time I have, I want to spend with her,” the proud mom gushed. “But while it’s easy to forget yourself, I can’t define myself as only Charlotte’s mother—one day, she’s going to be an adult, and then where am I?”
And it sounds like SMG definitely deserves our top honor – she’s already taught baby Charlie to love her greens! “We’ve already taught her to love healthy food,” the mom-of-one shared. “We took her to sushi on Saturday night, and everybody couldn’t believe what she inhaled. I think it’s important at a young age to enjoy different tastes. And we make this green juice for her. It’s basically everything but the kitchen sink. We go to the farmers’ market and buy everything and just put it in the juicer: kale, Swiss chard, carrots, celery. You name it. And now we’ve all started drinking it, and we’ve all been healthier.”
Jennifer Garner:
Alias alum Jennifer Garner, 39, and husband Ben Affleck welcomed their third child, son Samuel Garner, on February 27. The high profile couple are also parents to daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3.
The hands-on mama recently gushed about her adorable and hilarious girls. “You know how once you have kids you never ever pee by yourself again? At least one of them is always in there with you at all times,” Jen shared. “So the other day… [Violet] is in there with me and all of the sudden she went, Oh Mom, we have to have a talk…She said, ‘Mom, your bottom has gotten so big that your panties don’t even begin to cover it.’ I said, ‘It’s called a thong, you wear it when you’re a grown up.’ She was like, ‘Uh, that is so gross!”
Angelina Jolie:
Academy Award-winner Angelina Jolie, 36, and her longtime love, Brad Pitt, are parents to six kids: Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and 3-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. “There are far too many things to count,” Angie said on the joys of motherhood. “But everything that matters in life has to do with being a parent.”
While she’s had a colorful past, the actress said she’s honored to be considered a role model. “I was such a punk for so long, you can’t imagine you’d be anybody’s role model,” she said. “I’m very grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to do some things that have allowed me to be a role model. I hope I’m [a role model] for my children, and especially for my daughters.”
Alyson Hannigan:
How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan, 37, and husband Alexis Denisof are expecting their second child this summer. The couple, who costarred in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, are already parents to 3-year-old daughter Satyana. “There’s so many in a day,” Alyson told Celebrity Baby Scoop of cherished moments with her daughter. “It’s hard to choose any of them, but they’re all so special. I love her perspective on life and I love getting to be a part of her world. She’s just such a sweet, sweet person and I love the things that come out of her mouth. She’s just so full of personality and so lovely. [Motherhood is] just the greatest thing ever!”
Jessica Alba:
Fantastic Four star Jessica Alba, 30, and husband Cash Warren welcomed their second daughter, Haven, in August. The couple are also parents to 3-year-old daughter Honor.
Jessica said motherhood “changed everything” and helped her gain perspective. “I felt completely different [after becoming a mom],” Jess said. “I really came into myself as a person. Before, I was always working for my identity. And then you take the focus off of yourself. I was probably-definitely-a bit of a narcissist. When you are young and an actor and driven, it’s a bizarre state of mind to be in at times. I was so focused on things that didn’t matter at the end of the day. Now I have what I do for a living in perspective. Working was everything to me, my entire identity, and once I got to step away from it, everything changed.”

Who do you turn to for parenting advice? Your own mother, your friends or other family members?
Or maybe you look to celebrity parents for their thoughts on parenting? Angelina Jolie advises parents to let their children “express themselves,” Tom Cruise says he doesn’t like to say “no” to his little girl, while Gisele Bündchen feels all new moms should be legislated to breastfeed. Take a look through our list of 10 celebrities and their top parenting advice.
Angelina Jolie:
Academy Award-winning actress Angelina Jolie and her longtime love Brad Pitt are parents to six kids: Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, Zahara, 7, Shiloh, 5, and 3-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne. And although they have such a big brood, their 5-year-old sure knows how to make headlines with her tomboy image!
Angle has said that Shiloh is “fascinating,” and elaborated on the fact that her daughter dresses “like a little dude…I would never be the kind of parent to force somebody to be something they are not,” Angelina said. “I think that is just bad parenting… Children should be allowed to express themselves in whatever way they wish without anybody judging them because it is an important part of their growth.”
Katie Holmes:
Dawson’s Creek alum Katie Holmes and husband, Mission Impossible star Tom Cruise, have a 5-year-old fashionista on their hands! While everyone around her is bundled up in warm winter sweaters or coats, their daughter Suri is often seen with bare arms and legs.
Katie came clean about Suri’s lack of weather-appropriate attire, admitting it can be “embarrassing.”
“Recently, Suri and I were taking a walk and a fight got started because it was cold outside and she didn’t want to wear her coat,” Katie said. “My philosophy is, well, fine, because after a block of walking you’re going to ask me for your coat. So the pictures of her [without a coat in cold weather] are sort of embarrassing.”
Suri’s Top Gun papa has also weighed in on Suri’s much-talked-about fashion choices — such as her heels and lipstick. “Listen, I believe that she (should wear) whatever she wants to wear,” Tom said. “She dresses herself. I want to encourage her creativity and her own self-expression. I think that’s important for the child’s own identity.”
The doting daddy went on to say that Suri is “so sweet” that it’s hard to say “no” to her.
Gisele Bündchen:
Model mom Gisele Bündchen has been known to speak her mind! Seven months after welcoming her son Benjamin with husband Tom Brady, the Brazilian beauty declared that breastfeeding should be made mandatory by law. “Some people here (in the US) think they don’t have to breastfeed, and I think ‘Are you going to give chemical food to your child when they are so little?’ I think there should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months,” Gisele said.
After a public uproar, the new mom clarified her thoughts about breastfeeding and the impact caused by her comment. “My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law,” Gisele wrote on her blog. “It comes from my passion and beliefs about children. Becoming a new mom has brought a lot of questions, I feel like I am in a constant search for answers on what might be the best for my child. It’s unfortunate that in an interview sometimes things can seem so black and white. I am sure if I would just be sitting talking about my experiences with other mothers, we would just be sharing opinions. I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge. I believe that bringing a life into this world is the single most important thing a person can undertake and it can also be the most challenging. I think as mothers we are all just trying our best.”
Jennifer Garner:
Jennifer Garner became a mother-of-three earlier this week when she welcomed her third child, son Samuel, with husband Ben Affleck. She is one of our favorite celebrity moms year after year, and when she talks about role modeling for her daughters Violet, 6, and Seraphina, 3, it’s easy to see why she gets the popular vote.
“I try really hard to put my phone down [ever since] my daughter pretended to take something out of one of her little purses and was like, ‘I’ve got an email – hang on one second,’” Jen said.
The Alias alum went on to encourage mother’s to stop judging one another, and start supporting each other. “I will tell you what I can’t abide – and I think the Internet has really created a space for it – women criticizing other women and mothers criticizing other mothers,” Jen shared. “It just makes me crazy, whether it’s between staying at home, going to work, how long you breastfeed, if you use formula. I feel like we should just assume everyone is doing the best they can. Women should take care of each other, not tear each other down. I would just like to see a mother who really believes that she has done it all so right, you know what I mean?”
Michael J. Fox:
While Michael J. Fox was once best known for his Back to the Future films, he is now widely known as an advocate for Parkinson’s Disease, a condition he was diagnosed with in 1991. The father-of-four often speaks out on the importance of family. “Always be available to your kids,”Michael advised. “Because if you say, ‘Give me five minutes, give me ten minutes,’ it’ll be 15, it’ll be 20. And then when you get there, the shine will have worn off whatever it is they wanted to share with you. I’ve never gotten up to see something one of my kids wanted to show me and not been rewarded.”
