The Color of Love

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Valentine’s Day is one of my very favorite excuses to craft, and if you’re looking for a non-sugary, inexpensive gift, look no further. The Long Thread posted this adorable heart crayon, made by melting crayon scraps, but she took it one step further by mounting it on this sweet card! And she’s that nice that you can dowload two different heart cards from her blog for free.

Now that’s true love!

6808-crayonheartsHEadYes, it’s that time again…time to spread the love. It’s almost Valentine’s Day! And really, there’s no better reason to craft!

Cool Mom Picks has teamed up with Etsy for this very cool Color-Your-Own Valentine’s Day Card Design Contest. They are looking for nine creative, cool Valentine’s Day cards that kids can color themselves and then pass out to their friends. They’ll pick their favorites and whip them up into a downloadable and printable PDFs for purchase at Etsy’ own shop.

And better yet, 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Heart Foundation, which helps children impacted by congenital heart defects, the number one birth defect in the USA.

The winners will have their work featured as one of the nine limited edition printable cards. Plus, the lucky winners will be showered with love and admiration on Cool Mom Picks as well as on the Etsy Storque Blog and their respective Twitter and Facebook pages. Winning designs will also be featured under the special “Etsy Contest Winners” section on the Cool Mom Picks homepage for the entire month of February with your name and a link back to your etsy shop or web page.

Crunching Numbers

Origami is amazing—the fact that someone has figured out how to bend and fold paper into lovely delicate shapes is just incredible. Most origami that you see is 3-dimensional, and if you try to save it, it turns into a dust collector and then eventually gets crushed and tossed in the trash. So when I saw these amazing 2D numbers by Kristen on Bloesum Kids, I thought it made for a cool way to preserve an origami creations. Just mount them in an Ikea frame, and there you have it. Insta-art. And cool insta-art at that.

Directions for folding the numbers can be found here.

Start with Art

Do you ever wake up in the morning and feel the need to ease into the day slowly and quietly? But then you remember, oh yes, nevermind, I have children. Well, Laura from the blog Chicken Counting devised a new idea that stalls the morning chaos, even just for 1o minutes.

Set out butcher paper and markers the night before with a little note (hers read: Before you run off and start your busy day, sit down and do a doodle; let your mind play!). When the kids tumble downstairs, they can keep themselves busy while you awaken with your coffee. Maybe this won’t give you hours of morning peace, but just a few minutes is better than nothing!

Do you have any unique morning or evening rituals that help ease the kids in and out of the day?

Modern Gingerbread

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

2009-12-homettaCrafting ornaments is so much fun…and stringing popcorn garlands, yeah, that’s great too. But seriously, there is nothing more fun than making a gingerbread house this time of year. When I spotted this super-mod construction on Ohdeedoh, I swooned.

If you are so inclined to strap on your pastry toolbelt, then you can download the “plans” here.

Happy baking…I mean crafting…I mean building!
