10 Celebrity Parents Who Do (and Don’t) Want Their Kids In Showbiz

This post was written by our friends at Celebrity Baby Scoop.

If you were in show business, would you want your children to follow in your footsteps? Or would you discourage your children from the limelight of Hollywood with every ounce of your being?

Celebrity Baby Scoop checks out which celeb parents have encouraged their children to enter the wild world of fame and fortune, those that forbid it with all their might, and the ones that sit on the fence.

1. John Travolta

John Travolta has kept us entertained since the 70s in the huge hits Saturday Night Fever and Grease. And not to mention his triumphant career comeback in the 90s cult classic, Pulp Fiction. Prior to the tragic death of his son Jett, John appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and announced his daughter Ella’s debut in the big screen comedy, Old Dogs.

“Jett was young when he saw Look Who’s Talking, but he didn’t like it when I was kissing Kirstie Alley. But Ella took right to it right away. That’s why last year she said, ‘When am I going to do a movie with you?’ Little did she know, dad had a trick up his sleeve. She’s a natural performer,” John said. “She’s just like I was. I didn’t push it at all, because I knew that worked. My mother didn’t push me, either. We were just given our space to be whatever we wanted to be, and I decided that works better than any kind of pressure.” John added, “Unless they’re afraid they’re going to be rejected and they want to protect them. And I can imagine parents would fear that, but you can be rejected in any profession.”

2. Tom Cruise

Fellow Scientologist, Tom Cruise, agrees that show business is a great place for kids. Tom’s son Connor entered the family business (mom is Tom’s ex, Nicole Kidman) when he was 14 years old in Will Smith’s flick Seven Pounds. Perhaps one day Tom and Katie Holmes’ 6-year-old daughter Suri will follow in her big brother – and her divorced parents’ – footsteps.

When asked if he’d like Suri to enter showbiz, Tom said:

“I’d love it. Acting is work I love. I love to create life and give energy, create characters, and create stories.”

3. Will Smith

Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith are all-for their kids entering the family business. Both of their children – son Jaden, 14, and daughter Willow, 11 – have graced the big screen. Jaden costarred with his father in The Pursuit of Happyness, appeared alongside Keanu Reeves in The Day the Earth Stood Still, and in the remake of the Karate Kid. Willow made her acting debut alongside her papa in I Am Legend and later lit up the big screen in Kit Kittredge: An American Girl.

So what does Will think of his kids entering the family business?

“She has a drive. She has an energy and she just connects to human emotion,” Will said of daughter Willow. “I think a big part was probably [seeing] Jaden after The Pursuit of Happyness. She saw what Jaden did, and she was like, ‘I want that,’” Will added. “Jaden is [like] Johnny Depp. He just wants to do good work . . . He loves acting, he just wants to make good movies,” Will said and joked, “and Willow is Paris Hilton. Willow wants to be on TV.”

4. Candace Cameron Bure

When Full House star Candace Cameron Bure sat down with Celebrity Baby Scoop, the busy mother of three said that her daughter Natasha has caught the acting bug while her son Maks hopes to be a hockey star just like papa Valeri Bure.

“Our kids are making that choice for themselves, and it seems they are following in both our footsteps. My daughter wants to act, and we’re allowing her to audition. My son Lev wants to be a tennis player, and Maks wants to be a hockey player. They’re all pretty determined and focused to pursue those goals. We’re supportive of whatever they choose to do, as long as they work hard and put all their effort into it and not quit when it gets rough.”

5. Bruce Willis

Bruce Willis is a proud papa to four girls: Rumer, 24, Scout, 21, Tallulah, 18, and Mabel, 5 months. Bruce has talked about his eldest daughter Rumer who has acted in films such as Now and Then and Striptease and TV shows such as 90210 and Sorority Row.

Turns out Bruce not only supports Rumer’s acting career, he also thinks she’ll make her way through the limelight of Hollywood without a problem.

“Rumer’s not only got the [acting] bug, Rumer’s successful — and she’s got a great head on her shoulders,” Bruce said of his daughter with former wife Demi Moore. “[She] wasn’t raised in Los Angeles, so she knows the difference between the illusion of Hollywood and what real life is.”

6. Alyson Hannigan

How I Met Your Mother star Alyson Hannigan and husband Alexis Denisof are parents to daughters Satyana, 3, and Keeva, 4 months. One of our favorite celebrity moms weighed in about how she plans to encourage her girls to play “in the grass” and “have a normal childhood” as opposed to enter the family business.

When Celebrity Baby Scoop asked if she wants Satyana to enter show business, Alyson said:

“No. I really want her to have a childhood that is about climbing trees, playing in the grass. I worry about raising her in LA, because you see these little kids that are obsessed with things they really shouldn’t even be aware of. I really would like her to have a normal childhood, whatever that means. But if she wants to go into showbiz when she is an adult, I’ll support her.”

7. Jerry O’Connell

Stand By Me alum Jerry O’Connell hopes that his 3 ½-year-old twin daughters Charlie and Dolly will follow in his famous footsteps – acting at an early age. The actor, 38, admitted he has been coaxing his daughters to join him in the spotlight — much to wife Rebecca Romijn‘s dismay.

“I’m trying to force them into the entertainment industry,” Jerry joked. “My wife is a little more, ‘Let them find their way. I would love for them to be on the Disney Channel. Maybe with a twins show of their own. Maybe they’re the new Olsen twins!”

8. Brooke Shields

Brooke Shields, a former child star, does not want either of her daughters – Rowan, 9, and Grier, 6 – to enter show business. When the mother of two was asked if either of her girls have caught the acting or modeling bug, Brooke said:

“For their sake, I hope they don’t. There’s a lot of pressure. As long as they get an education, they can do whatever they want. If they need my help, I’ll try, but I hope they find other interests.”

9. Alison Sweeney

We’ve loved her as bad girl Sami Brady on Days of our Lives for the past 20 years. Alison Sweeney continues to shake things up in Salem, as well as host popular weight loss show, The Biggest Loser. When the busy mother of two sat down with Celebrity Baby Scoop, we asked her if she hopes her children – Ben, 7, and Megan, 3 – will walk in her famous footsteps. Alison replied:

“It wouldn’t be my first choice, but then, it’s not my choice. If when my kids get older they express an interest, I’ll support them in pursuing their dreams as my parents have done for my brothers and me.”

10. Melissa Joan Hart

Similar to Alison Sweeney, Sabrina The Teenage Witch star, Melissa Joan Hart, has been acting since she was a child. Melissa told Celebrity Baby Scoop she hopes her three boys – Mason, 6, Brady, 4, and Tucker, 1 week – don’t catch the acting bug. When asked if she wants her boys to follow in her famous footsteps, MJH replied:

“Not really but I wouldn’t stop them if it’s really in their hearts. They are both very dramatic and musical so it might be coming.”
