Walking the Runway Naked — While Eight Months Pregnant

You’ve probably already read about the pregnant model who walked the runway naked on Twitter or Facebook–it’s the kind of story that goes viral the minute it’s reported in the news. In case you missed it, former Miss Wales Sophia Cahill, 28, wore nothing but a series of high-fashion hats on the catwalk at Welsh milliner Robyn Coles’ debut show in London earlier this week, along with four other nude models. But unlike the other models she was eight-months-pregnant with her second child.

She was one person I knew would be more than happy to get her kit off,” Coles, who is a friend of Cahill’s, told the Daily Mail. “I thought it would be nice she would be pregnant for the show. You never see that kind of thing in fashion.”

Additionally, the 31-year-old former fashion buyer from Pontcanna, Cardiff, told the Western Mail her idea “to send out models baring all was an appeal for publicity as she launches her millinery line.” I’d say Coles achieved her goals.

I admire Sophia’s fearlessness–and that she fessed up to being very nervous backstage about strutting her stuff. ““If I hadn’t have been pregnant, I wouldn’t have given doing this a second thought,” Sophia, who once posed for Playboy, told WalesOnline. “I would have said yes, no problem at all. But your body changes so much when you’re having a baby and I was worried how other people would react seeing that–it scared me.”

I definitely wouldn’t have been as brave as Sophia when I was pregnant with my son (truth is, I won’t ever be as daring as Sophia!). What about you? If given the opportunity, would you model in the nude while pregnant?

Good for her!! Not remotely pornography! I love it! The only question I would have is if anyone actually saw the hats?

Donna, first you didn’t have to read that article and second I only see a single picture that shows her from the shoulders up. If that ‘offends’ you, I think you need to adjust yourself. Seems like you’re someone who just needs something to bitch about. Thanks for sharing your comment though (said very sarcastically) :)

Personally I think posing for Playboy and walking the runway nude is gross. Pregnant or not I don’t want to see that.

I love this. Models have been posing nude for years as art and I love that she showed the beauty of being pregnant. I wouldnot have been so brave!!

I wouldn’t, because I don’t want to blind anyone :P I’m overweight as it is, and unfortunately have angry purple stretch marks on my belly (this is my second child). I’d do everyone ELSE a favor and stay clothed!

Seriously people? Don’t be such a prude . Every body is beautiful pregnant or not and the fact that she had confidence being pregnant and all to show off her body all I gotta say is if you got the body rock it..I would not have been that brave with I was preg with my son

I think the photos were very tastefully done. Also, I think it is great that a woman is showing off her pregnant body. I know most women are ashamed of their pregnant bodies and we are taught to hide them. It’s great that she was used in place of some stick figure.

I echo the other person’s thoughts.. seriously??? It porn and who wants to see it.. People have no moral values at all. There is a reason for clothes and if she was naked how is this fashion and WHO wants to see it??????????

  12. by Amanda

    On February 23, 2012 at 12:51 pm

Funny, I thought I thought the comments would be about how great she looks, and good for her for being confident and beautiful while pregnant….instead I read how some people still view the naked human body as being pornographic. Amazing how extreme each side of the debate can go. I say “Good for her!” and seriously in the fashion world this means nothing. It’s not like little kids are watching, and if you don’t approve, don’t look. Some people need to lighten up I think and stop being so judgemental. I think a pregnat womans body is beautiful, and I say cheers to celebrating her as a strong, confident, and beautiful pregnant woman!

So sad that nudity is so taboo that some women can’t even appreciate the amazingly beautiful pregnant body of another woman. I personally find a healthy, fit human body beautiful in its own right, but compound that with the miraculous sight of a healthy woman’s pregnant belly…nothing compares to it. I feel sorry for those insecure, unhappy women that can’t appreciate such beauty. And to answer the original question, if I had a supermodel body, heck yeah I would share my baby belly with the world to appreciate (just don’t touch LOL)

If this offends you ladies so badly or grosses you out then why even bother reading the article???? I think it is a beautiful thing, to be confident in ones self enough to share with everyone else. Playboy and the runway aren’t penthouse and hustler… I mean seriously find something more meaningful to bitch about…. Like the cut in school budgets or whats going on in our messed up presidency…

You go girl!! There is no way this is porn. You are very ignorant if you think that being naked and porn are one and the same. I totally agree with Angela when she said there was no other time when I felt so beautiful as when I was pregnant, and I was pregnant w/ twins. I am a belly dancer and had no problems dancing w/ my very full belly exposed to everyone. Would I personally have gone totally nude in public…probably not, but that is just my own issues w/ being sanitary.

  23. by Ashley

    On February 23, 2012 at 1:13 pm

Nudity in itself is not pornography. I went to a prestigious art school and on more than one occasion had classes that involved nude models posing for us. If it’s offensive to you to read about a nude model (good for her by the way) the title of the article was pretty self explanatory and you could have easily avoided it.

    On February 23, 2012 at 1:17 pm

Seriously? Come on people get over yourselves, stop being jealous and appreciate art, fashion and culture. Good for her for being brave enough to do that as well as taking such good care of herself that she looks that good! Stop being so close minded and hateful because you have issues…to each his own. If you don’t like it, don’t look!

So….by some of your definitions of pornography, you’re all guilty of being porn stars…..be sure to never look at your naked body in the mirror again after a shower. She’s beautiful and the only one that will judge her is God so that is up to Him whether or not to condemn her.

Isn’t walking the runway a way for a designer to show of their goods to be purchased? What was the goods she was showing off to be purchased…the hat? Was her husband the designer showing off his goods?

  27. by Tiffany

    On February 23, 2012 at 1:34 pm

    I think she looks beautiful.
It’s definitely not pornography and if you think that you must be one of those never nude people.
How do you shower with clothes on or do you just take wash ups so you never have to be naked?

  28. by Michelle

    On February 23, 2012 at 1:35 pm

I’ve had 4 children and I have to say that I felt disgusting with each and every one of them. I have never seen a prego lady and thought “how beautiful” no matter how skinny and perfect their body was. Deformed and uncomfortable would be more accurate to my mind. That being said, I have no problem with anyone else thinking a prego woman looks beautiful. Does that make me close minded? Take a bath, hippies, and respect other people’s opinions. Just because other people don’t think the way you do doesn’t make them “wrong”, just different. sheesh.

I love that the designer thought to include a pregnant woman…they’re so frequently banished from the fashion world during those 9 months. Would I do it? Probably not — there’s no hint of a model’s body here. But I definitely felt more confident when pregnant than when I wasn’t.

LMAO….Pornography? You prudes are ridiculous. Bet you stay locked up in your houses all day with no tv because the world is too evil, too. The headline clearly stated what the article was about…if it offended you then, why in the world would you read the article?? Just to give a porno comment? I believe what makes porn” porn” is the sexual arosal its trying to produce to people. The human body is just that, the human body. If she walked down the runway naked holding two guns, I have to wonder which would get people taking more? For me, it was a fashion show, an art show and therefore if she wants to feel proud and beautiful. That’s wonderful. I am shy about my body despite being thin, so I would not do it, but i applaud her and others willing to show that the human body is nothing to be hushed away. We are taught too young that we should be ashamed of our bodies and of sensuality( mind you all I did not sexuality, because i believe there is a difference). So- im not a hippie, im a suburban stay at home mom, but I give her two thumbs up!

I certyainly don’t think this is porn on any level, nudity does not offend me so long as its in teh appropriate places .I don’t want some nasty dude flashing me and my kids at the park. But i do find our society to be hugely uptight about nudity.I still think this is gross,i have been pregnant 3 times and felt so ugly ,i do not find the pregnant body to be beautiful in any way ,so i will not say this is art either .Its a publicity stunt thats working quite well ,wether you like it or not, your still talking oir thinking about it.

There’s nothing wrong with the human form. And I applaud her bravery for baring all and waddling down the runway. Not for me :) And girls, the designer unabashedly admitted having her models in the buff was a publicity stunt so she could showcase her hats. You’re missing the point.

  40. by kristen

    On February 23, 2012 at 2:41 pm

I can’t believe anyone would think that a runway model being naked is pornographic. What about the clothes they model that show their nipples? I guess that’s pornographic too? The article didn’t show her naked body. Nudity is not pornography. That being said, I never felt as beautiful as when I was pregnant with my daughter (who is 8 months old). I went swimming at a public pool 2 days before giving birth and I wore a swimsuit that showed by belly a little. I had several women come up to me and tell me how cute I looked. A woman’s body is beautiful and a pregnant woman’s body is even more beautiful.

You know what’s kinda funny? I swear some of the names on FB and here, I’ve seen defend breastfeeding in public topics because it’s “natural”. Irony at it’s finest.

I think it’s WONDERFUL. So many women are pressured into thinking you can only be a waif-like 12lb. BOY with a vagina to be “sexy”. It’s time we celebrated ALL women in ALL stages of life.

Do some of these same women complain when they go to the doctor and there’s a head on shot of .. lady bits (we’ll say that for the prudes)? Oh no, the breast exam pamphlets!!!

Wait wait – I bet they’ve sat outside every single major art gallery asking for black squares over Madonna paintings, the chapels and leaves for David!

EVERYONE! Shield your EYES!!! It’s a walking woman without clothes!! In a private environment, where people had to go see or click the link!

Well crap, now I’m corrupted and will run down the street naked, twiddling as I go all because of this pornographic influence!

    I really admire this girl!
This is definitely not even close to being porn. Ugh people are so ignorant these days. I know I wish I had the confidence that she did doing that. Obviously she is a gorgeous woman showing her pride of being pregnant and I don’t see any of you guys showing your pride. So get off her case!

  43. by meghan

    On February 23, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Sweet <3 I'm so happy to hear that a woman is pleased with her pregnant version of herself enough to strut it down the runway. I would love to do this. I am so insecure n hate my hubby looking at me right now. He tells me everyday how beautiful I am n in the back of my head I hear myself say yeah right, your just being nice so I don't cry. I want to be able to love myself in all my versions…pregnant with #3 I thought I'd be more confident, but I'm still shy. They give us birthing, breast feeding, n parenting classes. But no class on accepting on ever changing pregnant bodies. GOOD FOR HER!!!

  46. by Jacqueline

    On February 23, 2012 at 5:15 pm

Good for her!!! I admire this woman. She should be so very proud of her body, because of what it can do AND because of how she has taken care of herself. YOU GO GIRL!

  47. by MeAndI

    On February 23, 2012 at 5:36 pm

Are you kidding me? This is high fashion?

Good for her, for being confident, but there are things that should still be private and being naked is one of them.

It has nothing to do with the fact that she is pregnant, as I would oppose this even if the model was NOT pregnant. Naked is not fashion.

I don’t think anybody would walk around naked, just to make a point that they’re confident, but if it’s for money, and in front of people that are there to see fashion – it’s ok, good for her???
What has happened to this world…

Oh and just to make a point, I think pregnant women are BEAUTIFUL! Some of you have commented that you hated how you looked while pregnant and find no beauty in a pregnant body, but I don’t agree. I never felt as beautiful as I did when I was pregnant! But that doesn’t mean that I felt the need to get undressed and show it to everybody. I think having confidense is, being clothed and not needing to bare all just to prove anything to anybody.
So this had nothing to do with being confident or not. If it wasn’t for money, she would not do it.

And this is why I feel the way I do. Your consiousness should not be compromised for money.

AMAZING! How beautiful!!! <3 I myself have been in lingerie runway shows at all stages of BOTH of my pregnancies & I got a lot of flack for it.. For the people saying anything negative about this; It really must suck to be so uncomfortable with your own body to put down someone else's just to make you feel better about your own. :/ If you don't like it; than don't do it. It's really that simple.

    On February 23, 2012 at 8:45 pm

Many opinions here most of which oddly enough actually favor the naked lady! Ha well I myself have always been insecure about my body…..well come to think of it except while prego! I had always felt beautiful mainly because I knew I was. After all just look at the amazing thing the woman body can do! But back to the point here it WAS some kind of porno crap if ya ask me…. I mean the model posed in Playboy! And what it boils down to is the fact that for many decades the nude woman body HAS been viewed as nothing more than for SEX SEX SEX! Sad but true! Men are pigs and a lot of women that some people here are calling the prudes are just obviously smarter than your giving them credit for…..come on…get real!!!!

  53. by Tammy

    On February 23, 2012 at 11:28 pm

The pregnant form is beautiful, but there are parts of the body that I would still be offended seeing. Hint: if there is (or was) hair there, it should stay covered. Seeing that is baring too much in my opinion. Baby bellies are beautiful, but in this case, I don’t believe the nudity was to celebrate the beauty of the human form, rather it was used as sexual exploitation to gain publicity. As someone said earlier…who was actually looking at the hats?

  54. by Amy

    On February 24, 2012 at 10:11 pm

There is a difference between porn and art. Look at playboy for example, it focuses on the sexual side of everything. This just says I am pregnant and beautiful. Would I do this? No but I again am not comfortable with my body, the model is and more power to her.

  55. by amanda

    On February 24, 2012 at 10:52 pm

I find it odd. Not porn, but not exactly art in my opinion either since it was for publicity.
I do think the whole thing would have been better if they at least wore underwear, in my opinion.
A pregnant belly is beautiful, we show our breasts when we breast feed, but going any lower to expose is beyond comfort for me to do or to want to even think about another doing. It just seems awkward.
A painting of genitals exposed is one thing, but just walking down the runway (or walking anywhere) exposing them is too much nudity in my opinion.

Althogh I think it is greeat that many women (including myself) view the naked body as art and on a different level the pregnant body…I still don’t understand WHY SHE DID IT? Someone please explain to me what was the purpose? I will agree that no matter your size the pregnant body is AMAZING NOT BECAUSE OF HOW IT LOOKS BUT BECAUSE OF WHAT IT STANDS FOR…(LIFE)… I loved and enjoyed being pregnant…I took lots of belly pics but wished I would have taken some completely nude!

How is walking down a runway, nude, going to sell hats? I know people weren’t looking at just the hats! The nudity was for publicity purposes… not as a means to be artistic. We can’t even be nude in public if we were to purchase the hats without being arrested or raped so what is the point in this? Put the girls in bikinis or something… I mean really. Art? Not so much.

Whatever, I totally modeled for a drawing class while 8 mos pregnant. And would never do it while not pregnant! It was liberating and the least sexual thing I’ve done while naked. You ppl are craaaazy if you think it’s porn. Porn is sexual, art does not have sexuality as it’s primary intent and purpose (usually) but rather uses the human form to communicate with the viewer. Take an art history class.
