How Parents Can Discuss Difficult Topics

parent-child-talkA few weeks ago, we shared a few tips from Project Recovery Iowa on how parents can talk to kids about natural disasters.

We interviewed Project Recovery Iowa to provide you with more advice on the ways parents can discuss catastrophes and tragic news stories without traumatizing children. Advice includes being sensitive to your children’s reactions and emphasizing the government’s progress to prevent/reduce suffering.

There is also helpful responses based on different age groups (ages 1-5, 6-11, 12-18) and ideas on how to cope with grief.

Great blog! In addition to the advice you shared, I love using children’s books to help my kids learn about and talk about tough topics.

When the Japanese tsunami struck, we did a “Japanese family night” to learn more about Japan. We reassured the kids that it was far away, but we also sent money to help those in Japan (and tried to develop empathy).

Its like you read my mind! You seem to know so much about this, like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you can do with some pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that, this is great blog. A great read. I’ll definitely be back.

I was just seeking this info for a while. After 6 hours of continuous Googleing, at last I got it in your website. I wonder what is the lack of Google strategy that don’t rank this kind of informative websites in top of the list. Normally the top web sites are full of garbage.
