6-Year-Old Author Writes a Picture Book About Obesity
LaNiyah Bailey is only 6-years-old, but she deals with many adult health problems. She was diagnosed with polydipsia (excessive thirst usually associated with diabetes), has a swollen colon, and is being tested for leptin receptor (a protein that may cause obesity). All these factors contribute to her protruding belly and extra weight. After being bullied verbally by adults and children, she wrote a book about her experience, Not Fat Because I Wanna Be.
The bullying started in daycare when the daycare provider called her “fat.” When her mother, LaToya, confronted the woman, she denied doing anything wrong. After switching to another daycare, children started calling her “elephant” and “pregnant,” and the name-calling continued.
Although overweight people are stigmatized with leading unhealthy lifestyles, LaNiyah and her parents want others to know that’s not always the case. By writing Not Fat Because I Wanna Be the young author wants others to understand this and to spread the message that “bullying is not cool.”Add a Comment
