Should You Ditch Your Diet Coke?

That’s the question raised by research that came out last week linking diet soda consumption to a higher risk of stroke. No one, researchers included, are saying this is a straight case of cause-and-effect, but this isn’t the first time diet soda has been in the hot seat. Past studies have concluded that people who regularly drink it have a higher chance of developing pancreatic cancer than those who don’t.

I don’t think any of us can really argue with the larger point here: Diet soda certainly isn’t good for you. And I say this as a Diet Coke lover. I have roughly one per day, and would have an enormously difficult time cutting it out altogether. But I’ll keep an eye on the research, that’s for sure.

    This recent research was kind of a kick to the gut around here. Mother’s Day weekend my sister-in-law went into a monthlong coma after a series of massive strokes. The damage caused in only a week’s time has left her unable to walk, control both hands, or even manage basic care for herself (much less her young children).

    I had no idea how devastating a stroke could be in a young person, and I would now do about anything to avoid it.

    If someone is having health problems that are known stroke risk factors (obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.) or stroke indicators (headaches, vision problems, sleep problems, etc.), cutting diet drinks (while addressing the risks/symptoms) seems judicious.
