Must See: A Stand-Up Mother
Finally! A reality television show that’s actually relatable! A Stand-Up Mother, a look into comic Tammy Pescatelli’s life, debuts on WE tv tonight at 10 PM ET.
A Stand-Up Mother documents Pescatelli’s life after she ditched Hollywood to raise her son, Luca, 2, close to family. Pescatelli, best known as a finalist in the second and third seasons of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, and her husband, Luca, a producer, moved to Meadville, Pa., a town she visited during summers and fun getaways. The premiere features Pescatelli and Luca planning a Wedtismal – that’s a wedding and baptism reception – to please her mother-in-law Rose (who provides fodder enough for a series of comedy shows). Rose doesn’t believe they’re married because she didn’t witness their City Hall wedding four years ago. The “tismal” part of the party is for the baptismal party they never threw for Little Luca.
Aside from the hectic party planning, A Stand-Up Mother shows Pescatelli trying to balance career and family in a very honest way. “I can’t give 100 percent to being a great mom, a great wife, and a great comedian because that’s 300 percent! After that 300 percent there’s nothing left for you!” she exclaimed.
While some parents with reality shows keep their kids out of the spotlight, Pescatelli chose to put her son on the show in order to accurately portray her life. “I want everyone to know that I didn’t pimp my child for a TV show,” Pescatelli says. “We went to great pains to make sure we didn’t have other reality show problems.” Such pains include the book she made with all the crew members photos and numerous talks with Little Luca to explain why strangers were in their house. She even solicited help and advice from her sister-in-law who has a master’s degree in early childhood development.
“I’m sure I’m not the only mother who sometimes feels like she’s spinning,” Pescatelli said. “I just get to say funny things about what happens.”
