Do You Email Your Pediatrician?

4029791859_1d8c31cdbdA few weeks ago a few of us at Parents had the opportunity to sit down with Judith Palfrey, M.D., who is the president of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Among the many topics we discussed—first and foremost the healthcare bill—was telemedicine, which is a fast-growing area of healthcare where medical information is exchanged through electronic communication. This can be as complex as having doctors participate in an online videoconference, or as simple as emailing with your pediatrician. Dr. Palfrey mentioned that telemedicine is used extensively in rural areas, which makes sense, since that’s where there’s often very little access to specialists. (This reminds me: In our April issue we have an important story on the pediatric specialist shortage called “The Doctor Will See You In….”)

I’m curious to know what your experience with telemedicine is. Have you had your child’s x-rays, for instance, sent to a specialist in a different part of the state (or country)? Have you ever had a video chat with a doctor or therapist? Does your pediatrician encourage—or even allow—you to email him? Let me know how it’s worked for your family.

I’d love to see more doctors move toward electronic communications with their patients. It would be so handy to e-mail, tweet, or facebook my OB, pediatrician, or midwife when a quick question pops up.

It’s great that I am able to e-mail my pediatrician for non-emergency stuff. I don’t tie up the doc’s phone for the ones with real emergency.
